His Mate, His Girlfriend

Chapter 90. The Truth

Ch. 90 / 172 May 06, 2026

Love

I was glaring at David. He averted his gaze and continued to drink his liquor. Everyone was celebrating the engagement but me.

" I want to leave now," I demanded. David sucked in a breath.

" I know you're mad about the surprise engagement," he said. He didn't fucking know just how upset I was. I was fucking pissed. I could hit him right now. I couldn't believe David did this to me. He tricked me!

" I'll talk to my father for a few minutes, and we'll leave," he told me, trying to kiss my lips. I could smell the liquor on his breath. I pulled my head away from him. I didn't say a word. I turned and went to the hallway for some privacy. I glared at the engagement ring on my finger. The desire to remove it and throw it was swirling around me, but I needed to act cautiously about his mother's health.

Ten minutes later, we left the house. I couldn't pretend to be pleasant when I was fuming!

" Oh, I'm sad to see you leave. I was hoping you'd spend the night here," Darlington whined. At that point, I couldn't even fake a smile.

" No, mother. Next time," David said, wrapping his hand around my waist. I almost sneered. He reeked of alcohol.

I bid everyone farewell, and they thanked me for joining them. Darlington was emotional to see us leave. She asked me for lunch on Friday before her doctor's appointment. She wanted to spend more time with ' her future daughter-in-law,' I couldn't break her heart, so I agreed. If someone was to tell them about the breakup, it should be David.

I hastily got in the car, and then David followed. I hated that he was getting handsy with me. I gave him an angry gaze and pulled away from him.

" I'm sorry if I surprised you. I thought you'd be happy," he slurred softly.

I scoffed, " What's there to be happy about? I begged you back there with my eyes not to propose to me, but you ignored me and did, knowing I couldn't say no in front of your family,"

He gave me a desperate and tired look.

" Love, I told you I wanted a serious relationship with you. The marriage proposal would happen sooner or later. And it cheered my sick mother a lot," That was his excuse.

" Oh please, don't try to use your mother to lure me into guilt. You did it for your benefit and your benefit only!" I yelled.

" What wrong did I do? We are in a serious relationship, and I wanted to take the next step. I love you, babe,"

" I don't care, David. I don't want to marry you!" I shouted.

His eyes flashed, and his facial reaction changed. His face was red. He recovered quickly, and his eyes clouded. He was having a conversation with his inner lycan.

Once they finished talking, his eyes got to their original color.

" Why don't you want to marry me?"

" Because my feelings have changed," I told him the truth. I couldn't draw this out any longer. It would only hurt him. Ellis would be hurt when he learned I didn't break up with David. The purpose of this date was to break up with him, not get engaged.

" What do you mean by that?" his voice was dangerous. His alpha aura swirled around the car, but I didn't fear him. David was a powerful alpha, but his aura wasn't as oppressing or dangerous as Ellis's.

" I still love Ellis... David, I'm sorry to do this but-"

" No," he interrupted me.

' No?' Vee decided to chime in. She scoffed. My lycan hated his guts at that moment. I pulled her back to the back of my mind before she said something careless. Vee had a sharp tongue.

" Did you betray me with him? Did you do something you shouldn't?" he asked, his eyes intense.

" I didn't," I told him. I was pleased about my decision not to do anything with Ellis because David would have used that to make an accusation. He saw in my eyes that I was telling the truth and nodded.

" Honey, that man is mated. He left you before for his mate, and if he could do that, he would do it again, " he said, but I shook my head. Ellis would never hurt me again. I trusted that.

" No, he won't. Ellis loves me, and I love him," I said sternly. David held my hands in his and stared at me softly. His gaze was anguished. I was breaking his heart, and I sympathized with him. I knew how that felt.

Losing someone you loved and planned a future with. David was a nice guy, but the heart wants what it wants.

" You are confused, Love. You saw each other again after so long, and since you never got closure, you feel like there might be something there," the desperation in his voice killed me. His eyes were so sad. I nestled his cheek.

" I know my feelings. It isn't about closure," I was stern. Vee was proud of me for standing my ground and not letting guilt make me second-guess myself. David and I didn't click the way lovers did. I felt he'd be a good friend. I only wanted to be with him because he was the best option.

" You are tired, and I'm drunk. We'll discuss this later, okay, for now we need to rest," David said. I didn't even realize we had reached my house. It was pointless to talk to him in the condition he was in. I was about to leave the car when he called my name gently. I twisted my neck to look at him.

" I don't accept this breakup. You want closure, go for it, but I don't accept the partition."

My lips parted in shock after his grave words.

" I'm telling you how I feel. It's not your choice to accept or not, David," I said and opened the door to get out, but he grabbed my elbow and pulled me back in, placing a kiss on me. I pushed him away from me.

There was something in David's gaze I couldn't read.

" I'm just kissing my fiancé. Nothing wrong with that," he chuckled.

" You're drunk. We'll talk when you are sober," I growled.

Two guards approached the car, and he let go of my arm. The guards were only checking if I was alright. I dismissed them with my hand and inhaled.

" Good night, David," I gritted my teeth and slammed the car door. I didn't wait for his car to leave when I went inside. David won't accept the split so easily. He thought I was confused. I needed to make him understand I wasn't.
