Ex-Wife's Comeback: My Husband Failed to Kill Me

Chapter 7

Ch. 7 / 10 Mar 09, 2026

The sleek, glass doors of Kane Industries towered above Karen as she stood on the bustling city street. It had been years since she’d stepped inside the building that once felt like her second home, and now it was foreign territory.

This wasn’t just a return—it was an invasion.

Karen adjusted her blazer, smoothing the lapels as she stared at her reflection in the glass. Gone was Tori Kane, the glamorous heiress. In her place stood Karen Walters: sharp, poised, and unassuming.

“Let’s do this,” she whispered to herself, stepping inside.

The lobby buzzed with the chatter of employees and the quiet hum of computers. Karen moved confidently to the reception desk, presenting her carefully forged credentials.

“I’m Karen Walters,” she said, her voice calm but firm. “I believe the board has been expecting me.”

The receptionist scanned her paperwork, her eyes flickering over Karen’s face before nodding. “Yes, Ms. Walters. Welcome to Kane Industries. The board is meeting in Conference Room C. Third floor.”

Karen entered the boardroom to a mix of curious and skeptical stares. Her eyes immediately found Selena, seated at the head of the table. Selena’s perfectly tailored suit and icy demeanor screamed authority, but there was a flicker of something in her expression when she saw Karen—something that resembled fear.

Selena recovered quickly, offering a tight-lipped smile. “Ms. Walters, I assume?”

Karen nodded, stepping forward and extending her hand. “It’s an honor to be here. My family always spoke so highly of Kane Industries. I’m eager to contribute.”

The handshake lingered a moment too long, Selena’s grip tightening as her eyes searched Karen’s face.

“You look familiar,” Selena said lightly, though her tone was razor-sharp.

Karen smiled, the picture of politeness. “I get that a lot.”

The meeting moved forward, but Karen could feel Selena’s eyes on her the entire time. She played her part perfectly, offering insights and ideas that impressed most of the board while carefully navigating around Selena’s pointed questions.

When the meeting ended, Karen lingered, casually observing as the other members filed out. Selena approached her, her heels clicking against the polished floor.

“Ms. Walters,” Selena said, her voice laced with practiced charm. “A word?”

Karen turned, her expression calm. “Of course.”

Selena’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. “You seem very… comfortable here. For someone so new.”

Karen shrugged, adjusting the strap of her bag. “Kane Industries is an inspiring place. I’ve done my research.”

Selena’s gaze hardened, but she said nothing more.

The weeks that followed were a game of chess. Karen used her position to subtly gather intel on the company’s inner workings, specifically Selena and Richard’s dealings.

She discovered that Selena’s control over the board was more precarious than it appeared. Rumors of mismanaged funds and questionable decisions had left some members quietly doubting her leadership.

Karen capitalized on this, planting seeds of doubt where it would hurt Selena the most. She “accidentally” forwarded emails highlighting discrepancies in financial reports, always careful to remain above suspicion.

Selena’s paranoia grew with each passing day. Karen watched as her once-flawless composure began to crack—subtle at first, then more obvious.

One evening, Karen worked late in her office, the glow of her computer screen casting shadows across the room. She heard the sharp click of heels approaching before Selena appeared in the doorway.

“You’re working late,” Selena said, her voice tight.

Karen glanced up, feigning surprise. “I like to be thorough.”

Selena stepped inside, closing the door behind her. “You’re an interesting woman, Ms. Walters.”

Karen leaned back in her chair, folding her hands calmly in her lap. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”

Selena studied her for a long moment, her expression unreadable. Then she said, “You look so much like her. It’s almost… uncanny.”

Karen’s heart raced, but she kept her smile steady. “I’ve been told I have one of those faces.”

Selena didn’t reply. Instead, she narrowed her eyes, the suspicion in her gaze as sharp as a blade. As Selena turned to leave, Karen’s smile faded, her mind already racing with her next move.
