Ex-Wife's Comeback: My Husband Failed to Kill Me

Chapter 6

Ch. 6 / 10 Mar 09, 2026

The low hum of the underground club faded into the background as Karen sat across from Darius Bennetti. His sharp, calculating eyes locked on hers, and for a moment, the air between them felt like it could snap.

“Who are you?” Darius asked again, his voice low but firm, his words carrying the weight of a loaded gun.

Karen didn’t flinch. She knew showing fear now would be fatal. “Someone who can help you destroy Richard Hollaway,” she replied evenly, her hands resting on the table to show she wasn’t a threat—at least not yet.

“That’s not what I asked,” Darius said, his jaw tightening. “I don’t deal with ghosts. If you want my help, I need to know who I’m dealing with.”

Karen leaned back slightly, her expression unreadable. “My name isn’t important. What’s important is the information I have. Richard’s operations aren’t as airtight as he wants you to believe. He’s got vulnerabilities, and I know where to find them.”

Darius tilted his head, studying her as if trying to see through her skin. “Convenient,” he said, his voice dripping with suspicion. “You just happen to know the secrets of one of the most powerful men in the city? And you expect me to believe you’re not hiding something?”

Karen met his gaze without hesitation. “Believe what you want. But I know Richard’s using shell companies to launder money through offshore accounts. I know his last shipment was intercepted because one of his lieutenants tipped off the authorities. And I know he’s planning to expand into territories that belong to you.”

Darius’s eyes narrowed, his posture stiffening. “Go on.”

Karen leaned forward, her voice dropping to a whisper. “He’s moving into Westside. Quietly, for now, but it won’t stay that way. If you don’t act soon, he’ll take over before you even see it coming.”

Silence fell between them. Darius’s expression didn’t change, but she could see the wheels turning in his mind. He swirled the whiskey in his glass, then set it down with deliberate precision.

“You’ve done your homework,” he said finally.

Karen allowed herself a small smile. “I don’t walk into lion’s dens unprepared.”

Darius chuckled, though there was no humor in it. “Careful, lion’s dens are dangerous places. Especially for someone who hasn’t proven themselves.”

“Then let me prove it,” Karen countered. “You want to take Richard down? So do I. I can give you the information you need, but I can’t do it alone. I need your resources, your manpower.”

Darius leaned forward, his gaze as sharp as a blade. “And what’s stopping me from just taking your information and leaving you in a ditch?”

Karen didn’t blink. “Because you know Richard. He’ll strike back hard if he finds out you’re coming. You need someone who knows how he thinks, how he operates. I’m your best shot at staying ahead of him.”

The silence stretched again, tension crackling like static in the air. Finally, Darius spoke.

“Fine,” he said, his voice like steel. “We’ll work together. But on my terms.”

Karen arched a brow. “What terms?”

“You’ll provide actionable intel,” Darius said, his tone brooking no argument. “I’ll give you the resources you need, but I call the shots. You step out of line, and this partnership ends. Permanently.”

Karen’s lips twitched in a faint smile. “Fair. But if you cross me, the same rules apply.”

Darius smirked, clearly amused by her boldness. “You’ve got guts. I’ll give you that.” He gestured toward one of the men standing nearby. “Luca.”

A tall, broad-shouldered man stepped forward, his dark eyes sharp and unyielding.

“Luca will keep an eye on you,” Darius continued. “Make sure you’re not playing games.”

Karen glanced at Luca, then back at Darius. “Babysitting me? That’s flattering.”

“Insurance,” Darius corrected. “I don’t trust you. Not yet.”

“Trust is earned,” Karen replied, standing. “And I’m willing to earn it. Just don’t get in my way.”

Later that night, as Karen walked toward the exit, she paused near the hallway leading to Darius’s office. She hadn’t meant to eavesdrop, but their voices carried in the stillness.

“If she so much as breathes wrong, kill her,” Darius said, his tone calm but cold.

Karen’s stomach twisted, but she forced herself to keep walking, her footsteps steady.

Outside, Karen pulled her hood over her head, her mind racing. The alliance was in place, but Darius’s words were a reminder of the precarious line she was walking.

“I’ll play his game,” she muttered to herself, her jaw tightening. “But I’ll make my own rules.”
