The rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was a cruel reminder that she was alive. Karen lay motionless in the dim hospital room, her body battered, her soul fractured. Her mind was a whirlwind of pain and memories, fragments she couldn’t control as they surged forward.
It started with flashes of her life before the explosion—the life she thought was secure. She saw herself walking through grand hallways adorned with expensive art, her reflection glinting off polished surfaces. A pristine life, but one built on lies.
Her pulse quickened as the memories sharpened, dragging her back to that fateful night. She was at the gala, dressed in an elegant black gown that Richard had chosen. She had smiled for the cameras, stood at his side, and played the role of the perfect wife. His touch on her back was firm, commanding, but now it felt hollow, even in her recollection.
Selena had been there, too, shimmering in emerald-green silk, laughing too brightly at Richard’s jokes. Karen had brushed off the unease that prickled the back of her neck. They were family—her husband and her adopted sister. What reason would she have to doubt them?
But then came the memory that burned the brightest, scorching her from the inside out.
Karen returned home early that night, her heels clicking against the marble floors of their penthouse. She had left the gala after Richard insisted he’d “finish up business” and meet her later. She wasn’t sure why she came back early, just a nagging feeling she couldn’t shake.
The house was quiet, unnaturally so. A faint sound drifted from their bedroom—low murmurs, then a hushed laugh.
Karen frowned. Her steps slowed as she approached the door, the handle cool against her palm as she pushed it open.
Her heart stopped.
Richard was there, his shirt unbuttoned, his strong, sculpted chest gleaming in the soft glow of the bedside lamp. His hands were tangled in Selena’s hair, their bodies pressed together in a feverish embrace. Selena’s silk dress was pushed off her shoulders, the straps dangling uselessly as Richard’s lips trailed down her neck.
Selena moaned softly, her nails raking down Richard’s back.
Karen stood frozen in the doorway, the world around her tilting violently. It felt like her lungs had stopped working, like the air had been sucked out of the room.
“What… what are you doing?” she managed to choke out, her voice trembling.
The two broke apart, turning toward her as if startled. Selena didn’t scramble to cover herself; she didn’t even look ashamed. Instead, she smiled—a slow, wicked smile that sent a chill down Karen’s spine.
“Oh, Tori,” Selena said, her voice dripping with mockery. “You’re home early.”
Karen’s eyes darted between them, her mind racing to make sense of what she was seeing. “Richard,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “What… how could you?”
Richard stepped forward, his expression cold and impassive. There was no guilt in his dark eyes, no hesitation in the way he adjusted his shirt cuffs. “You shouldn’t have come back,” he said, his tone as sharp as a knife.
Karen took a shaky step backward, her hands clutching the doorframe for support. “This… this is my sister,” she stammered. “How long has this been going on?”
Selena sauntered toward her, brushing her hair back as if nothing was amiss. “Oh, don’t act so shocked, Tori. You’ve always been too trusting. Too naive.” She tilted her head, studying Karen with a smirk. “You thought Richard loved you? Please. You were just a placeholder.”
Tears stung Karen’s eyes, but she refused to let them fall. “You’re disgusting,” she spat. “Both of you.”
Richard’s jaw tightened, and he moved to stand beside Selena, a united front against Karen. “This isn’t personal, Tori,” he said flatly. “You were in the way. You’ve been in the way for a long time.”
Karen’s world crumbled around her. These were the people she had trusted most, the people she had built her life around. And they had been conspiring against her all along.
“I gave up everything for you,” Karen said, her voice shaking with fury. “For this marriage, for this family. And you—” Her voice cracked as she pointed at Selena. “I took you in when no one else would!”
Selena’s smirk widened, her eyes gleaming with cruel satisfaction. “And I’ll be taking your place, dear sister. Richard and I… we have plans. Big plans. You’ve served your purpose.”
Karen stumbled back, unable to believe what she was hearing. Her chest heaved as betrayal and anger warred within her.
“That’s enough,” Richard said, his voice low but commanding. He turned to Selena. “She’s seen enough.”
The memory blurred, shifting into the chaos of the explosion. The smell of gasoline filled Karen’s nostrils, followed by the deafening roar of fire. She remembered Richard’s voice, calm and emotionless as he walked away.
“Make sure it looks like an accident,” he had said to someone in the shadows.
Karen’s screams were swallowed by the flames as the force of the blast hurled her backward, shrapnel slicing into her skin.
Her eyes snapped open, and she was back in the hospital room, her breathing ragged. The taste of betrayal lingered on her tongue like ash.
Her gaze fell on the stack of belongings beside her bed. Among them was an envelope she hadn’t noticed before, the initials “A.D.” written on it in her grandmother’s elegant handwriting. Karen reached for the envelope, her fingers trembling. Whatever was inside, she knew it held the key to taking back everything she had lost.
