Between Four of Us

Chapter 156

Ch. 156 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

The plane landed smoothly at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok, as the early evening sun painted the horizon in golden hues. Jade looked out the window, taking in the bustling activity of the runway. This was her first time in Thailand, and despite her fatigue, excitement bubbled inside her.

As they disembarked, the humid air wrapped around her like a warm blanket. Jade took a deep breath, the unfamiliar scent of tropical flowers and street food faint in the breeze.

“Bangkok,” Thiago said with a grin as they stepped onto the tarmac. “This place never gets old.”

Milan nodded, his sharp gaze already scanning their surroundings. “Jade, remember to stay close to the hotel. This isn’t Paris or Rio. It’s different here.”

Jade rolled her eyes lightly, though she kept her tone respectful. “I’ll be fine. I’m not planning to wander too far.”

Enzo, walking beside her, gave her a knowing smirk. “Don’t worry. You’ll have company.”

She shot him a questioning look, but he didn’t elaborate.

The hotel was breathtaking. Situated near the Chao Phraya River, it was a blend of traditional Thai elegance and modern luxury. Jade’s room overlooked the bustling city, and as she unpacked, she couldn’t resist the urge to explore.

After freshening up, she changed into a casual outfit: a flowy sundress paired with comfortable sandals. She left her hair loose, letting it fall over her shoulders as she grabbed her bag.

Walking through the streets of Bangkok was like stepping into another world. The vibrant chaos, the constant hum of activity, and the dazzling colors were mesmerizing. Vendors lined the sidewalks, selling everything from handmade trinkets to sizzling skewers of grilled meat. The air was filled with the aroma of spices, herbs, and sweet fruits.

Jade stopped at a food stall, her eyes lighting up as she saw bowls of steaming noodles.

“Pad Thai?” the vendor asked with a friendly smile.

“Yes, please!” Jade replied, her stomach rumbling.

She watched as the vendor worked quickly, tossing noodles, shrimp, and vegetables in a wok. When the dish was handed to her, she took a bite and practically melted.

“Oh my god,” she mumbled around a mouthful. “This is amazing.”

She continued walking, nibbling on her food and marveling at the intricate details of the temples she passed. The golden roofs gleamed under the setting sun, and she could hear the soft chime of bells in the breeze.

What Jade didn’t realize was that Enzo’s men were keeping a watchful eye on her from a distance. Two of them sat at a nearby café, their casual appearance masking their alertness.

“She’s talking to locals again,” one of the men murmured into his earpiece.

“Keep an eye on her,” came the reply. “Make sure she doesn’t wander into trouble.”

Jade stopped at a small square where a group of locals was gathered, laughing and clapping as they played a traditional game. Curious, she stepped closer, watching as they used wooden sticks to knock over a set of colorful blocks arranged in a pattern.

One of the men, a young local with a bright smile, noticed her interest. “You want to try?” he asked in accented English.

Jade hesitated for a moment before smiling. “Sure! What’s the game called?”

“Makruk,” he replied, handing her one of the wooden sticks. “It’s simple. You aim and throw to knock over as many blocks as you can. Here, I’ll show you.”

He demonstrated, his stick flying through the air and knocking over three blocks.

“Your turn,” he said, stepping aside for Jade.

Jade lined up her shot, her tongue peeking out slightly as she concentrated. She threw the stick, and it clattered harmlessly to the ground, missing all the blocks.

The crowd erupted in laughter, but it wasn’t mean-spirited. The young man chuckled and handed her another stick. “Try again. A little more force this time.”

Jade grinned, determined now. She took another shot, and this time, the stick struck a block, sending it toppling over. The small crowd cheered, and Jade laughed, a genuine, carefree sound that surprised even herself.

“You’re a quick learner,” the man said, offering her a high five.

“Thanks,” Jade replied, her smile widening. “This is so much fun.”

As they continued playing, Jade found herself relaxing more, soaking in the warmth and friendliness of the locals.

From their spot at the café, Enzo’s men exchanged a glance.

“She’s enjoying herself,” one said, watching as Jade laughed and chatted with the locals.

“Too much,” the other muttered, pulling out his phone. “Let’s report back.”
