The door open and shut but I did not bother to look who it was. I can smell Harley, anyway. He just got back from the crime scene. I bit my fingernails from the nervousness I feel inside.
What did he find out? Is it a shifter? A regular wolf? Damn it!
I did not bother looking at Harley when I felt his presence in the living room. Pretending that I was watching the TV, I stopped biting my nails and inhaled slowly.
“How’s everything out there?” I asked in a normal voice.
Harley exhaled loud. “Just a wolf. Badly torn apart though.” he slumped himself down the couch. “How’s the talk with the brother?”
I shrugged. “Just the usual.”
“Yeah, like I know the usual, right?” he said sarcastically.
I looked at him and squinted my eyes. Why was he so grumpy? “Someone twisted your panties or something?”
Harley shook his head and looked away. It looked like he was thinking about something and wanted to say it out loud but also thinking if he should.
“Don’t tell me you will act like that all day? Because if you do, I won’t mind you doing your job at the top of a tree, Gamma.”
I don’t mean it but I have to say that so I could fish what was on his mind. I have a feeling that I should know. Harley is the one who went to the corpse so he might have picked a rumour or two.
Did someone saw Jacob like Roscoe was saying? Is that even true? How did Roscoe watched that anyway?
Harley stayed silent before sighing loud and snapping his head to look at me.
“W-What?” I asked. He looked at me funny.
“I was here, you know.” he started.
“Huh?”
Harley stood up as he sighed. “I was here when you talked to Roscoe. I didn’t left completely. I know Alpha Jacob ordered me to leave, to give you two the privacy but I couldn’t. I do not trust him. So I stayed in a safe distance that my presence won’t be felt. I heard some of it, Luna.”
I swallowed hard. Suddenly, my throat was dry and my mind is in a haywire.
“W-What did you hear e-exactly?”
Will it be fine if Harley know about Jacob and how he lost his control sometimes? Jacob is the Alpha, it wouldn’t give him a good image - fuck good image.
“Something like Alpha Jacob lost control of his wolf.” Harley groaned and looked at me. “He is the alpha. How can that happen? I just misheard, right?”
I bit my lower lip and looked away. Fuck good image. I need more hands for help, more brain to think.
I sighed and shook my head. “You heard it right, Harley. He lost control of his wolf.”
His jaw dropped. “So he’s the one who killed that wolf?”
I know I was uncertain if Jacob really did kill that poor wolf since he doesn’t remember a thing.
“According to Roscoe, but Jacob has no memories of what happened so we’re not sure.”
With closed fist, Harley bit the back of his forefinger. “Damn, Luce. If you only saw what happened to the wolf.”
I seemed to be deafened. “That bad, huh?”
“Worse. Its shreded. Definitely soul-less. Think about it. The investigators had a hard time distinguishing if the corpse was a werewolf or a regular wolf. I never heard of such incident that investigators had to differentiate a corpse, Lucy. They had to ask the higher ranks! Everyone was curious. And now that I know what happened to Alpha Jacob yesterday, the corpse was not a question anymore. It all makes sense now.”
“We’re not sure about that yet, Harley.” I sighed.
Images of Jacob in his big black wolf, biting through the flesh of a wolf, flashed in my head. I immediately shook my head and closed my eyes tight to ignore the suggestive pictures.
Stop it, Lucianna.
“Then we’re not going to do anything about it? Because Jake has no memory of yesterday? Is that it?”
I groaned and stood up, pacing back in forth in front of my Gamma.
“I don’t think we should tolerate this--” he paused when I looked at him with squinted eyes.
“We are not tolerating it, Harley. I am not tolerating him!” I hissed.
“Then what should we call us if we will do nothing?” he grunted.
Wait a minute. “Why are you talking as if Jacob lost hold of his wolf several times? This is the first time, so stop making a big deal of it!”
Though I said that, I’m not sure myself if I was right. This should be a big deal, what am I talking about?
Harley was quiet for a moment. We were both internalizing what was happening and I was afraid of what could be running in his head.
He will not betray Jacob, at least I’m sure about that.
“Don’t let anyone know about this.” I warn him still.
“Duh. I know. My blood has no rogue in it.”
“And Jacob shouldn’t know that you’re aware of this, Harley. I’m not sure if he want anyone to know. He barely talk to me.”
He nodded then looked at me. “But why is he losing control? Do you know?”
I paused. Should I tell him that Jacob’s fate is cursed? That I’m about to give birth to a disastrous monster that will end my mate’s life?
“Stop being too nosy.” I hissed and walked out of the living room then headed to the bedroom.
I decided not to get out of the room until Jacob arrives home.
**
“Was Roscoe telling the truth?” I asked Jacob, the moment he entered the door. He just arrived from the Hall and I’ve been waiting for him to come home.
He looked at me with guilt in his eyes. It saddened me that he feel this guilt of something we were not even sure if true.
“Come on, Jacob. Talk to me! You won’t allow Roscoe to meet me this morning if you don’t know what he has to say!”
His nose flared. “What did he told you?”
“What did he-? Why are you even asking me that? Can’t you just answer my question?”
He threw his jacket on the couch and faced me. “I don’t remember, Lucianna! I already told you that I have no memories of yesterday.” he hissed and brushed his fingers through his hair. “And I was asking what my brother told you because he refuse to tell me anything!”
Jacob is frustrated. He looks so damn lost and I wonder how he feels, what he was thinking, how he could handle this. If I was this flustered, I might shut down.
I sighed and decided to tone down. He do not need this pressure from me, he was pressured enough.
“You killed the wolf.” I sighed. I know he already knew about the wolf. He is the alpha for fuck’s sake. “Roscoe said he was there. He told me that you turned into a murderer but don’t worry because the corpse was a regular wolf.”
Jacob grunted and pulled on his hair with frustration. He slumped down the couch and I watched him just sit there and breathing heavily.
“Hey,” I walked to him and enclosed my arms on him. “It’s just a forest wolf. You are not a murderer. It’s an accident.”
Jacob hissed and shook his head. “It’s not a regular wolf, Lucianna. It’s not.”
I frowned. Maybe he remember something from yesterday to say that?
But I shook my head. “No, no. They investigate the corpse entity, and its confirmed. It was just a regular wolf.” I shrugged. “Though during the investigation they had a hard time distinguishing it, but its confirmed. Baby, the higher ranks confirmed it. You shouldn’t worry. Okay?”
Jacob started sniffling, and I was stunned when I realized that he was crying silently.
I hugged him more, not able to imagine what my mate was going through. He was hurting and it shows. Tears of regret flow from his eyes and he was clearly blaming himself. He must be scared, afraid of the unknown, and now maybe he was relieved--
“I’m the higher rank, Lucianna. They asked me. And its not just a wolf, it’s a shifter. One of us.” he groaned loud and gritted his teeth. “My brother was right, I am a murderer.” then he stood up and walked away.
I was frozen from what I just heard.
