Alpha of My Heart

Chapter 4

Ch. 4 / 30 Sep 07, 2025

Valeria walked into the hall, with measured grace, her cloak trailing like spilled ink across the marble floors. Heads turned as she passed. Whispers followed, barely contained behind cupped hands and curious eyes.

“Is that her?”

“She’s a Valemont, straight from the lineage of Dracula, right?”

“They say her family’s old money. Like, ancient-old…”

She could feel the weight of their stares, not the hunger of werewolf eyes or the gleam of vampire curiosity, but something colder. Suspicion. Fascination. Envy. It crept under her skin, each step echoing louder in her ears as she tried to focus on the gothic arches and stained-glass windows throwing fractured rainbows across her path.

The hum of conversation ebbed and surged like waves, and though she kept her crimson gaze forward, the undercurrent was inescapable. She was used to attention, but not this kind. This was something else. She didn’t like it.

A tightness began to coil in her shoulders. Her jaw set. Her steps quickened.

Then, a soft voice beside her broke the tension.

“Are you in Alchemy class too?”

Valeria turned slightly. A girl with warm golden eyes and translucent, shimmering wings was walking beside her, matching her pace with casual ease. Her auburn curls bounced gently with every step, and the air around her seemed to ripple with a breeze only she could summon.

Valeria blinked, caught off guard by the simple question.

She nodded.

“Great! We’re classmates!” the girl beamed, as if they’d known each other forever. “I’m Ember.”

The warmth in her voice was like sunlight filtering through storm clouds. Genuine. Unassuming. Valeria’s expression softened, just a touch.

“Valeria,” she said quietly.

Ember’s smile widened like she’d just stumbled upon a secret worth keeping. “Well, Valeria,” she said brightly with a beautiful smile, “let’s conquer Alchemy together.”

Valeria found herself smiling back at her. Ember’s smile was contagious. They both moved to a seat and the murmurs died down as a tall woman swept into the space like a flame on the wind, long, fiery red hair cascading down her back in loose waves. Her emerald eyes swept across the room, sharp as blades but not unkind. The scent of citrus and something ancient followed in her wake.

“Good morning, students,” she began, her voice rich and commanding. “I am Professor Cyrene, your Form Teacher for this academic year.”

A quiet ripple of attention moved through the crowd.

She made her way to the center of the platform, robes catching the light like molten fire. “Welcome to Juvenile Academia,” she said, her words deliberate. “If you came here expecting a typical school experience... allow me to dispel that illusion now.”

Nervous chuckles flickered through the crowd. A werewolf boy in the front scratched at the back of his neck, his leg bouncing beneath his desk.

Professor Cyrene paced slowly across the platform. “This year, we are introducing a special testing program,” she continued, her gaze sweeping the students. “Its purpose: to forge understanding between our most historically opposed lineages.”

Valeria’s stomach twisted. She didn’t like where this was going.

“To that end,” Cyrene went on, “all students will be paired for the entirety of the academic year. You will live, train, and learn together. Your assignments will be joint. Your challenges will be shared.”

A low wave of murmurs erupted, some confused, others alarmed. Valeria’s jaw clenched.

“And at the end of the year,” the professor added, pausing for effect, “you will present a final project. One that proves your ability to understand and cooperate with each other. Consider it... a survival test.”

Ember leaned over, her brows raised. “That’s intense.”

Valeria didn’t answer. Her mind had already leapt ahead, hoping, that Ember might be her partner. At least with a fae, there was a chance for peace.

But Cyrene raised her hand, and with a single motion, summoned dozens of glowing orbs into the air. Each one hovered over a pair of students, connected by glowing golden strands that shimmered and shifted like living thread.

Gasps echoed through the room. Names were called.

“Ember of the Fae and Kael of the Shifters.”

Ember gave Valeria an apologetic look, her wings fluttering softly as she rose.

One by one, the orbs linked names.

“Lucien of the Vampires and Mira of the Witches.”

On and on. Valeria sat motionless, waiting, heart drumming steadily in her chest.

Then, an orb above her head pulsed, and floated across the aisle to hover above the student directly opposite her. She looked up, and her breath caught.

Tristan.

He leaned back in his seat, arms stretched behind his head, a slow grin spreading across his face like sunrise. He looked entirely too smug.

Professor Cyrene didn’t need to say it, but she did.

“Valeria of the Vampires and Tristan of the Werewolves.”

Silence.

“What?!” Valeria surged to her feet, eyes blazing. Her voice echoed through the chamber.
