Alpha of My Heart

Chapter 18

Ch. 18 / 30 Sep 07, 2025

You're really something else," Valeria whispered, her voice barely audible in the dim light. Her fingers traced the line of Tristan's jaw as she lay beside him on the soft bed of moss and grass he had prepared. Her lips were still swollen from his kisses, her body humming with satisfaction.

Tristan looked down at her, eyes blazing with emotions he could no longer suppress. "You think so? Because I think you're everything."

Valeria blinked slowly, trying to suppress the smile threatening her lips. "You're ridiculous."

"Ridiculously in love with you? Guilty as charged," he said, brushing a strand of hair from her cheek.

She rolled her eyes, though the flutter in her chest betrayed her. "Tristan..."

"Hmm?"

She turned onto her side, propping herself on one elbow. Her voice trembled slightly, as if confessing a sin. "Why me? You could have anyone."

He sat up slowly, turning to her with a gentleness that made her breath catch. "Because you're not just anyone, Valeria. You're you. You drive me insane, you're stubborn, unpredictable, but you're real. You make me feel things I didn't even know I could."

Valeria looked away, suddenly vulnerable. "This is dangerous. You know it is. We're not supposed to be like this. Someone like me... someone like you... it's wrong."

He reached for her hand, bringing it to his chest. "Is this wrong? What we feel?"

She didn’t answer right away. Her gaze dropped to their intertwined fingers, soft and warm against his chest. Her silence said everything. The conflict, the uncertainty, the truth.

Tristan leaned closer, brushing his nose against hers. "Then say it. Say you feel the same."

Valeria closed her eyes. "I do."

His breath hitched. "You do?"

She nodded. "I do. I’ve been trying to fight it, but I can’t anymore. I love you, Tristan. But this... this has to stay between us. No one can know."

He stared at her, stunned. It wasn’t the answer he hoped for, but it was enough. For now. "You want to hide this? Hide us?"

"Yes," she said firmly. "At least for now. The others wouldn’t understand. My people wouldn’t forgive me. Yours wouldn’t forgive you."

Tristan’s expression darkened for a second. "Do you think I care what anyone thinks? I’d burn the entire world if it meant keeping you."

Valeria cupped his face gently. "I know. That’s why I’m asking you not to. Please, for us. Just... let’s keep this secret."

He sighed, defeated. But even in defeat, his eyes still shone with adoration. "Fine. For you, I’ll keep it quiet. But only for a while."

She nodded. "Thank you."

They leaned into each other, lips just about to meet again when a loud sound echoed from the trees.

Valeria jerked upright, eyes wide. "What was that?"

Tristan was already grabbing their clothes, his senses sharpened. "Footsteps."

Her heart pounded as she scrambled to dress. "Do you think they saw us?"

"I don't know. But we can’t risk it. Come on!"

He grabbed her hand and pulled her to her feet just as torchlight began to cut through the darkness of the woods.

"Let’s run!" Tristan hissed, grinning.

Valeria laughed, despite herself. Her bare feet slapped against the soft earth as they took off, dodging trees, leaping over roots.

More torches lit up behind them.

"They’re heading west!"

"Keep your voice down!"

Valeria glanced over her shoulder and nearly tripped. "They’re gaining on us!"

"Then we’ll have to be faster. Come on, princess."

"Don’t call me that!"

Tristan chuckled. "You love it."

"Do not!"

They darted through the brush, breathless and laughing, the thrill of being caught somehow amplifying everything between them.

Eventually, the sounds faded behind them. They ducked into a thick cluster of trees, hidden by shadows and leaves. Panting, they leaned against each other, the forest spinning around them.

Tristan still held her hand. He never let go.

"That was... close," Valeria whispered.

"Too close," Tristan agreed, brushing a leaf from her hair.

Their eyes met, and the laughter died away. Silence filled the space between them, thick with unspoken words and a thousand emotions.

"We should get back," she said.

"We will. Just... let me hold you a little longer."

She nodded, letting him pull her into his arms. The moonlight touched their skin, soft and silver.

Valeria rested her head against his chest. "I’m scared."

"Of what?"

"Of how much I love you. Of what we’ll lose if this goes wrong."

Tristan kissed the top of her head. "Then we make sure it doesn’t go wrong. We’ll figure this out."

Her fingers gripped the fabric of his shirt tighter. "Promise me."

"I promise."

And with that, they slowly pulled away, walking back under the cover of night, two hearts beating in sync, a secret between them more dangerous than any war, but more beautiful than any dream.

And in the dark, as the trees whispered around them, Tristan looked at her one last time. "You’re mine, Valeria. No matter what."

She smiled sadly, her heart aching and full all at once. "And you’re mine."
