Why do they care about our people? They are ruthless killers, just like the fangs.
“You just threatened to kill my best friend? Why do you care about my people suddenly?” I ask, interested in what their motives really are.
Cree faces me. “Yeah, pretty much, but there is an exception.”
“Who is special enough to be safe from death?” I ask, wondering if my family is part of that exception. Maybe that’s why he hasn’t killed me.
The man looks at me like I’m dumb, then glances at Cree with a side-eye. “She doesn’t know?” his brow lifts.
Baffled, I butt in. “Um, know what?” I press, wanting to be included in whatever they knew, and I didn’t.
Cree darts his eyes back and forth between us. “Nothing.” then he walks past the man but stops in the doorway. “Bring the girl,” Cree adds over his shoulder and exits without glancing back at me.
Great, here we go again. Sakari, the prisoner. I roll my eyes, sighing, and drag my feet towards the front when the man grabs at my arm, and I swiftly jerk it away. “I can walk all by myself, dog!” I snap, bumping into his shoulder before I depart.
I feel satisfaction in calling him a dog. I’m sure he will retaliate somehow later. But I just shrug. I’m supposed to be dead already, so I don’t really care at this point. I’m sure death will come at some point, just have no clue when. In fact, I’m looking forward to it.
We walk in the night with the moonlight beaming down upon us, and the cold air is thick around us. I can see my breath in front of me as I inhale small amounts of crisp oxygen. I’m between Cree and his pack member, which I’m guessing is his Beta.
The Beta glares at me with his baby blues as I glance over my shoulder at him. I roll mine at him in return and turn back around.
Alpha Cree stops suddenly, and my petite frame slams into his solid back. “Geez!” I huff.
He spins around, covering my mouth, then places his finger on his lips. “Shh,” Cree gestures in a hushed tone. “They’re near,” He adds and puts me behind his back, calling his Beta to his side with a nod.
My eyes peek through Cree’s arm and dart around curiously. Without warning, they came from nowhere. Four zombie assholes rush us, two taking down Cree’s Beta. One came at me, but Cree shoves me out of the way and clotheslines his ass, flipping him in the air. Then Cree gets tackled by another.
He saved me, but why? The whole freaking thing between Cree and me is beyond confusing.
Cree and his Beta fight them, and I am impressed by the Beta. I expected a weak ass compared to Cree, but he did well for himself. I’m proud of him.
With my distraction of watching werewolf men fighting, I am oblivious to the leech with his sights on me. He rushes at me, slamming me into the rough wet grass.
Frantically, I wave my arms in a frenzy. “Get off me, zombie creep!” I scream while he tries taking a bite out of my neck. His eyes are dark, soulless, and hungry, and I am the late-night snack. I hold him back the best I can while searching for a valuable weapon to kill this bastard.
Nearby is a small stick, not very sharp, but I’m not thinking about making it a comfortable death. I only want this freak off me. My arm stretches out frantically, searching for the weapon. I keep my eyes on the monster, whose teeth are only inches away from my jugular.
Cree sees me in distress but is busy with two others, so I am on my own. I must scoot with this zombie asshole attacking me. He snaps and barely misses me, but I have the advantage now that the stick is in my grasp. “Go to hell, you blood-sucking apocalypse bastard!” I scream as I plunge the dainty tree limb into the middle of his chest cavity.
Mr. zombie deadweight slumps on top of me. I shove his limp body off, get to my feet, and then pull out the piece of wood stuck in his chest. This could be useful later.
After I gloat for killing one of them, I glance around, noticing those other two bastards are jumping Cree, and my entire body burns with rage. I don’t understand why I feel so pissed about them being douchebags and not fighting fair, but I take a deep breath and charge toward one of them with my little stick. With determination, I aim for zombie number two. I have no clue what to call them. Are they vampires? Zombies? Aliens? Who knows?
As I tackle his ass to the ground, we tumble down a hill, rolling over one another. At the bottom, the fuck face gets to his feet, staring at me, confused. “Why are you helping the wolves?”
My eyes widen in shock; this asshole can speak. I really thought they were zombies. Do zombies talk? I don’t think so. I thought they only made gurgling sounds. Thanks for stirring me wrong Walking Dead. I blame all my stupid thoughts on Netflix.
“What the hell are you?” I ask and feel weird having a conversation with this thing that just attacked us.
He gives me a look of disgust, like how could I not know who he is. “Your people call us fangs, but we are vampires, duh,” he replies smartly.
What the fuck? Is this asshat giving me an attitude? And who knew they could be so great with sarcasm.
“Hey now fucktard, I am the only one who can be a smartass!” I claim, placing my hand on my hip in annoyance.
Alpha Cree and his annoying Beta come over the hill, I guess, to save the helpless girl they think I am. It’s more along the lines that they are messing up my curious conversation with the vampire man here.
I roll my eyes, shaking my head, disappointed at them. When I return my attention to the vamp man, he’s gone. “Damn,” I sigh. I’m inquisitive. I mean, wolves are cool, but I want to know about the bloodsuckers. It’s like living in history.
My brow lifts, irritated, giving away my annoyance for the two of them. “Why do you think it’s necessary to butt in? I mean, I killed one of them all by my lonesome. I’m not completely incompetent like you think,” I declare and stomp past them.
The Beta catches my arm, stopping me. “Where do you think you’re going?”
Cree grabs the Beta’s shoulder, giving him a stern stare, and I glance between them. “Away from you two!” I hiss, yanking my arm away, and walk off.
