CHAPTER 43—The Blood That Commands

Ch. 43 / 150 Jan 03, 2026

Vera's POV

My entire world had narrowed to the low, resonant thrumming of Lucien's life-force flowing from his heart, across the obsidian stone, and into my waiting core. The Virelith Anchor was working. I felt an immense, stabilizing pressure settle over the furious, consuming energy of the Blood Curse—the instability was fading. I was no longer a bomb, but a fortress.

The sensation was dizzying, profound. As his strength poured into me, I felt not just stability, but his absolute, selfless devotion, amplified by the ritual. It was the purest expression of our bond.

I was utterly defenseless, my focus locked on the flow of energy.

Then the chanting stopped in my ears, replaced by the sound of rushing movement.

Valeriu Sangeu.

I heard the terrible, desperate roar of Lucien—a sound of pure terror and powerlessness. I didn't need to see him; the bond showed me the terrifying, singular thought in his mind: He's aiming for Vera. He's going to stop the transfer.

Valeriu wasn't targeting my body; he was targeting the conduit—the moment of transfer—which would instantly corrupt the ritual and kill us both.

I couldn't move. My hands were held rigidly over the obsidian slab, channeling the flow. My mind was entirely focused on receiving the Virelith Anchor. To move, to open my eyes, was to break the ritual and guarantee our annihilation.

But the ritual had already changed me. I was no longer just the Blood Princess; I was now the anchor's receiver, saturated with Lucien's protective strength.

As Valeriu's shadow loomed over me, his blade flashing toward my throat, the Sanguinara power—which had spent centuries being unstable and parasitic—reacted. It wasn't the curse that responded, but the stabilized, fortified blood, fueled by Lucien's life.

I am the Queen. I command the blood. I command the balance.

A blinding, crimson light erupted from my chest, directly from the Blood Diamond hidden beneath my gown, powered by the incredible influx of Lucien's anchor. It wasn't a projectile or a blast of fire; it was a sudden, violent, focused kinetic pulse—an extension of the same protective shield I had built during the duel, now amplified one thousand-fold by the ritual transfer.

The pulse slammed into Valeriu. He hadn't expected the conduit to fight back. He had expected a fragile target, an empty vessel.

The force was so immense, so purely focused on disruption, that Valeriu was thrown backward with a sickening crack, his body skidding across the stone floor and slamming into a nearby sarcophagus. His assassin's blade clattered away, useless.

The kinetic pulse had protected us, but the shock of commanding such raw power nearly broke my concentration. My sight blurred, and the flow of Lucien's life-force wavered.

"Vera! Finish it!" Lucien's desperate voice echoed in my mind, a mental scream through the bond.

I fought to maintain the chant, forcing the powerful, stabilizing flow of the Virelith Anchor to continue. My blood demanded the counter-balance, and Lucien was giving it everything.

Valeriu, miraculously, was not dead. He pushed himself up, clutching his side, his face contorted in a mask of shocked fury. He realized the source of the strength: the Virelith Anchor had stabilized the curse, making the Queen more powerful, not less.

He began to scramble toward his fallen blade, his one goal still to end the ritual.

But there was no time. The Virelith Anchor was locking into place.

The final word of the Sanguinara acceptance chant left my lips.

The agonizing drain on Lucien's heart stopped instantly. The flow of life-force was replaced by a permanent, steady thrumming—a stable, balanced connection that felt like a quiet, eternal fire. The fierce instability of the Blood Princess power was gone, replaced by a magnificent, contained strength. I was whole.

I opened my eyes. I was no longer Queen of a cursed throne; I was Queen of a Blood Bond.

My immediate concern was Lucien. He was slumped over the obsidian slab, utterly drained, the blood from his chest wound still glistening in the dim lantern light. He was pale, his eyes fluttering, but alive.

"Lucien," I whispered, reaching for him.

Valeriu, seizing the moment, finally snatched up his blade and launched himself in a final, frantic attack—not toward me, but toward Lucien's exposed, defenseless back.

I moved with an instinct I didn't know I possessed. Now fully anchored by Lucien's stability, my Sanguinara power was instantaneous and complete. I didn't need to chant, didn't need a word.

I thrust my hand toward Valeriu. The power that burst from my core wasn't a kinetic pulse this time; it was pure, refined Sanguinara command—the ancient, dark core of the Blood Princess.

Valeriu froze mid-stride, his body locking up as if encased in crystal. His eyes widened, reflecting the full, terrifying realization of what he was facing. The Queen was no longer weakened; she was stabilized, empowered, and absolutely furious.

I walked toward him, my body feeling magnificent and whole, the splinted arm a minor ache. I stood inches from the frozen Prince, looking into his eyes.

"You sought to destroy my crown with a curse, Valeriu," I said, my voice low and vibrating with absolute authority. "You tried to sever the bond with agony. You failed. My bond has made me whole, and my curse is now my strength."

I lowered my voice, uttering the final sentence that shattered his defiance.

"You will kneel, Prince."

Valeriu, against every fibre of his will, dropped to his knees, his frozen body collapsing to the cold stone. The pure, inescapable Sanguinara command flowed through him, stripping him of all resistance.

The ritual was complete. The enemy was defeated. The curse was balanced.

My immediate victory felt secondary to the safety of the man bleeding over the obsidian stone. I rushed back to Lucien, leaving Valeriu kneeling in the darkness, a monument to his own arrogance.

"We did it," I whispered, cradling his head gently in my lap, pressing my good hand to his bloodied chest. "We are safe, my King Consort."
