Two Vampire Brides

CHAPTER 35—The Field of Honor

Ch. 35 / 150 Jan 03, 2026

Vera's POV

The moment I stepped back into the throne room, the air seemed to crackle. It wasn't just the presence of Prince Valeriu Sangeu; it was the sheer force of our discovery in the archives—the truth of the Blood Curse and the legal loophole we'd found. I felt like a paper doll, thin and fragile, standing against the winds of centuries of tradition.

But I had a shield: Lucien.

He was already standing where I'd left him, near the dais, his presence a fortress of fury. His hand rested on his sword hilt, his posture radiating a primal promise to kill Valeriu the second I gave the order. Valeriu watched me with that infuriatingly smooth, predatory smile, clearly expecting me to yield to his demands—divorce Lucien, enter his "observation," and accept the cure for the curse.

He clearly underestimated the Blood Princess.

I walked past Lucien, giving his hand a swift, hard squeeze—a silent promise of both trust and command. I settled onto the throne, feeling the weight of the crown settle heavily on my temples.

"Prince Sangeu," I said, my voice projecting, cold and clear. "I have considered your demands. You claim the Shadowhold throne is illegitimate due to the instability of my line and the compromised status of my Consort."

Valeriu inclined his head slightly, the very picture of polite menace. "Precisely, Your Majesty. I offer a clean, blood-sanctified resolution to the curse and the inevitable political chaos it guarantees."

"I disagree," I stated. "Your challenge is not a political intervention; it is a direct attack on the Blood Bond and the honor of the King Consort, Lucien Virelith."

A flicker of surprise, swift and profound, crossed Valeriu's perfect features. He hadn't expected me to turn his attack back on him. He had been too arrogant, too dismissive of Lucien to see the flaw in his strategy.

I continued, my gaze unwavering. "By publicly questioning King Consort Virelith's honor and demanding the dissolution of our bond without presenting proof of treason—a stipulation of the Carpathian Covenant—you have yourself violated the deepest laws of blood fealty. Therefore, under Article Seven of that same Covenant, I, Queen Vera Sanguinara, invoke the ancient right of the Field of Honor."

A collective gasp went up from the Shadowhold nobles, followed by a confused murmur from the Carpathian delegation. A legal duel was antiquated, barbaric even, but it was binding. It was chaos, but it was also a weapon.

Valeriu quickly recovered, a slow, appreciative smile spreading across his face. "Ah, how utterly charming," he purred, the sound laced with mockery. "The Queen resorts to the schoolyard challenge on behalf of her pet warrior. Very well. A duel it shall be. However, before the blood is spilled, I must make one final, personal offer."

He took a few purposeful steps, pulling me away from the gaze of the nobles but not from the protective aura of Lucien, who was now vibrating with suppressed fury two feet away. Valeriu leaned in, his voice dropping to a seductive whisper—a deliberate act of intimate tension designed to provoke my Consort.

"Look at him, Queen," Valeriu murmured, his smoke-colored eyes sweeping over Lucien's furious stance. "He is a warrior. Noble, yes, but predictable. He can only fight the enemy outside the walls. I, however, can fight the enemy inside your blood. I offer you a partnership of minds, Queen. We, together, free of the curse's pressure, could forge an empire rooted in pragmatism, not sentimentality."

He reached out a hand, his touch light, almost reverent, as his fingers grazed the bare skin of my wrist. The contact was unsettlingly warm, carrying a current of dark, ancient power that was undeniably potent—a terrifying, charismatic appeal.

"Discard the past, Vera," he breathed, using my name as a weapon. "Marry me, and I give you the Serpent's Heart today. You survive. You secure the line. You rule. He can be exiled comfortably. You exchange one consort for one kingdom, and you gain the stability he can never offer you."

My entire body thrummed with the violation of his touch and the intellectual lure of his offer. He had laid out the most logical, most selfish, and most self-preserving path. He was offering an escape from the curse that threatened to consume me if I ever risked an heir.

Before I could reply, Lucien moved. It wasn't a charge, but a slow, deliberate intercession. He smoothly placed his body between Valeriu and me, his back to the Prince, his broad shoulder a wall against the Carpathian's touch. It was a gesture of unshakeable ownership—a defiance that needed no words.

I felt the immense effort it took Lucien to restrain his blade. His muscles were rigid, and the familiar scent of mountain air and rage was potent.

I reached out and placed my hand firmly on Lucien's forearm. It was my choice. It was my voice that needed to speak.

"Prince Sangeu," I said, my gaze cutting past Lucien's shoulder to meet Valeriu's eyes. "I am Queen. I make the choices that preserve Shadowhold. I have already made my choice: my bond with King Consort Virelith is not a weakness; it is the foundation of my reign. Your offer is rejected."

Valeriu inhaled slowly, his smile finally dropping away. He recognized the depth of my resolve. When he spoke next, his voice was hard, stripped of all pretense.

"Very well, Queen. The Field of Honor it is. But the stakes are not merely the Consort's honor. If I fight, the outcome must determine the legitimacy of your current reign as per Article Seven."

My heart plummeted. He had twisted the duel, raising the stakes from Lucien's pride to my crown.

"If my Consort falls," I whispered, "Shadowhold falls to the Carpathian claim."

"Precisely," Valeriu confirmed. "Now, the terms. The duel will commence at midnight, the hour of transition, in the old Sanguinara Catacombs—a place sanctified by blood and ancient lineage."

He paused, and the final, brutal twist was delivered.

"And to ensure the legitimacy of the process, the duel will be fought using the Ritual Blades of Fealty. These blades are bound to the current ruling heart: yours, Queen Vera. For every drop of blood taken in the duel, the ruling heart feels a commensurate, amplified echo. It ensures the duel is fought with absolute conviction by both parties."

He was condemning me to share every blow. If Lucien was hurt, I would be hurt. If Lucien died, I would be broken both physically and spiritually. He was using the curse—the instability of my powerful, yet fragile, blood—to guarantee my suffering and his victory.

Lucien swore softly beneath his breath. He turned, his gaze meeting mine—protective fury mixing with absolute horror at the terms. He was willing to fight to the death, but he couldn't bear the thought of me sharing the pain.

"I accept," I stated, cutting off Lucien's protest before it could start. We had no choice. It was the only way to buy time against the curse.

Valeriu bowed, his victory secured before the fight even began. "Until midnight, then, Queen. Try to rest. You'll need every drop of strength you possess to endure the honor of your Consort."

He left, his footsteps echoing through the stunned hall. I stood there, leaning heavily against Lucien's chest, feeling the crushing, cold certainty of my impending fate. My power was magnificent, my love was absolute, but in twelve hours, I would be risking both in a duel rigged for my annihilation.
