Their Human Mate

Chapter 19

Ch. 19 / 30 Apr 07, 2026

Jarek finds me drowning in parchment.

I'm surrounded by towered stacks of texts I barely comprehend—Pre-Treaty Bond Mechanics, The Formation of Lycanthrope Social Structures, a particularly dense tome titled simply The Anchor Phenomenon—when his shadow falls across the table.

"You're researching bond mechanics." His ice-blue eyes scan the disaster I've made of the library's organizational system. "Inefficient approach. Half these sources are outdated by at least two centuries. The other half are theoretical fiction."

I lean back, rubbing my temples. "Then help me."

He freezes. It's subtle—a hitch in his breathing, a slight tilt of his head—but I feel it through our bond, the analytical mind behind those pale eyes suddenly calculating variables I can't see.

"Help implies a collaborative dynamic I haven't been invited to participate in," he says carefully.

"Consider this your invitation."

He settles across from me with characteristic precision, long fingers already sorting my scattered materials into logical categories: Primary Sources, Secondary Analysis, Pure Speculation. He works in silence for ten minutes, occasionally murmuring annotations—"Incorrect dating, disregard" or "Useful diagram on page forty-seven"—while I watch the methodical efficiency of his hands.

"You're different from the others," I observe, breaking the silence. "You don't look at me like I'm a catastrophe or a conquest."

"Resentment is an emotional response." He doesn't look up from the text he's annotating. "I prefer analytical frameworks. Your existence presents a fascinating anomaly. Studying you offers more recursive value than resenting you."

"Romantic."

"I don't experience romance in conventional ways." His eyes meet mine, unblinking and devastatingly direct. "I should clarify—our bond affects me physiologically. I experience arousal, possessiveness, the biological imperatives of mate attraction. Blood flow increases, neural activity spikes. But the emotional components others describe—giddiness, longing, romantic attachment—don't translate through my cognitive architecture."

He says it like he's describing weather patterns. I feel the truth of it through the bond—not coldness, exactly, but a different frequency. Running water where the others are fire.

"Does that bother you?" I ask.

"It bothers others." He returns to his notes, but his hand tremors slightly. "They expect feelings I cannot produce. Eventually they conclude I'm defective and withdraw."

"What if I don't need conventional feelings?" I lean forward, catching his gaze. "What if I just need you to be honest about what you do feel?"

Something shifts in his expression—microscopic, but seismic for him. His pupils dilate. His pulse accelerates; I feel it echo through the bond.

"That would be... acceptable," he murmurs. "Optimal, even."

He stands with fluid grace, extending his hand. "Come. My quarters are more secure for practical experimentation."

Jarek's cabin is exactly what I expected: sparse, organized, every surface serving a function. The bed is narrow but pristine, sheets military-tight. He locks the door with methodical precision before turning to face me.

"Remove your clothes," he says. Not a command—an invitation to participate in a study.

I do, slowly, watching his eyes track the reveal. He's watching like a scientist, but the heat in him is real. I feel it through the bond—a sharp, focused arousal that lacks Rhett's warmth or Theron's desperation but burns just as bright in its purity.

"Lie down."

I settle onto the bed, the cool sheets a shocking contrast to my heated skin. He approaches with the same precision he applied to the texts—kneeling beside me, his hands hovering an inch above my skin, mapping heat signatures.

"You produce more thermal radiation here," he murmurs, palm hovering over my sternum. "And here." Lower, over the pulse point in my thigh. "Interesting."

"Jarek." My voice is breathier than I intend. "You don't have to study me. You can touch me."

"That's exactly what I'm doing." His hand finally makes contact, spanning my waist with fingers that tremble slightly. "I'm cataloguing your responses. Every gasp, every temperature fluctuation, every muscular contraction. I want to know precisely how to break you apart."

He begins with devastating slowness. His mouth follows his hands, lips tracing the path of my carotid artery, pausing to measure my elevated pulse with his tongue. When he cups my breast, his thumb finds my nipple with exact, unerring accuracy, rolling it until I arch off the mattress.

"Response time: four seconds," he breathes against my skin. "Sensitivity index appears high."

"Stop—" I gasp as he bites down gently, sending lightning down my spine. "Stop talking like I'm an experiment."

"I am the experiment," he corrects, his free hand sliding down my stomach with methodical intent. "The bond is testing whether I can feel anything beyond data. Whether I can lose myself in the variables. You are the control, Abby. The constant. I'm the variable that's been waiting to be solved."

His fingers find me wet, ready, and he makes a sound—low, guttural, entirely unscientific. "Fascinating. The physiological response to your arousal is... disproportionate to my expectations."

I laugh, the sound breaking into a moan as he circles my clit with precise, devastating pressure. "Is that a compliment?"

"It's an observation." He sheds his own clothes with efficient movements, revealing a body leaner than the others but no less powerful—whipcord muscle and pale skin marked with scars I want to map with my tongue. "One I intend to investigate thoroughly."

When he enters me, it's with a single, perfect thrust that seats him to the hilt. He pauses, eyes squeezed shut, his entire body vibrating with the effort of control.

"Neural overload," he gasps. "Sensory input exceeds processing capacity."

"Stop processing," I urge, wrapping my legs around his waist, pulling him deeper. "Just feel."

He moves with methodical intensity—deep, measured strokes that hit exactly the right angle with mathematical precision. It should feel clinical. Instead, it feels like being worshipped by a machine that has learned desire. His hands never stop moving, cataloguing, learning—pressing here to make me gasp, adjusting his rhythm when my breathing changes tempo.

"Tell me," he demands, his voice scraping lower. "Tell me what you need."

"You," I sob, my nails digging into his shoulders. "Bite me. Seal it. Make it real."

He growls—a sound of pure, surprised possession—and strikes. His fangs pierce the hollow of my throat, opposite the marks left by Rhett and Theron, and the pain detonates into pleasure so intense I scream, coming apart around him with brutal force.

Jarek follows me over the edge, spilling inside me with a groan that sounds like surrender, like discovery. As the bond snaps into place—a cool, bright star joining the constellation in my chest—he collapses against me, his hand pressed to his own sternum.

"Fascinating," he murmurs, his eyes wide with genuine wonder. "I actually feel that."
