Their Human Mate

Chapter 12

Ch. 12 / 30 Apr 07, 2026

They arrive like thunderheads—pressure dropping, oxygen thinning, the woods going quiet indifference.

Sera first. Kade second. Both moving with the synchronized lethality of predators who have shared kills and bedflesh. She’s all sharp angles and tactical black, gear strapped tight enough to turn her body into a weapon. He’s broader than Rhett, meaner somehow, his permanent scowl carved deep as canyon walls. They don’t enter the clearing. They occupy it, displacing the air we were breathing with something colder. Older.

Theron’s hand freezes on my wrist, mid-correction of my block. I feel his pulse spike through the contact—alarm transmuted into something chemical and urgent. Across the dirt, Rhett’s bulk shifts, not toward me but between me and them, a mountain deciding to avalanche. Jarek’s pen stops. The silence is loud enough to taste.

And Hrollok—

Christ.

I feel it before I see it—a lance of agony so pure it nearly buckles my knees. Through the bond, his emotional architecture fractures, walls he’s spent years mortaring together crumbling in an instant. He doesn’t retreat. He flees, six and a half feet of honed violence scrambling backward like a kicked dog, putting the width of the clearing between himself and Sera. His back hits an oak hard enough to shed leaves, but he doesn’t stop. Can’t stop. His chest heaves, green eyes blown wide, humiliation scalding off him in waves that make my throat close.

Sera watches him without watching. The indifference is surgical, precise as a dissecting knife. She’s cut him out so completely that his collapse doesn’t even register as data.

“This is how you’re training your Alpha?” Her voice carries the weight of old money and older blood, honey over a bear trap. “Like she’s spun glass?”

“Sera.” Grogan steps forward, silver hair lifting in the sudden wind. His diplomatic mask slips on too late; I see the murder behind his eyes, the centuries of restraint keeping his hands uncurled. “We weren’t expecting visitors.”

“Clearly.” She circles us, and the men compress inward, a fist tightening. Kade hangs back, arms crossed over a chest that strains his tactical vest, that permanent scowl deepening as he catalogs my five with the boredom of a man deciding which to break first. “She’s vertical, so I assume you’ve been playing at tag rather than preparing her for execution.”

I drop my stance. Sweat slicks my spine despite the chill. “I’m learning.”

“You’re being gelded.” Sera stops inches away, violating every boundary of combat space. She’s taller than me, built for runway and warfare. Her finger rises, sharp nail tracing my jawline with enough pressure to sting.

“They pity you. That’s why they pull their punches. Why Rhett won’t use his mass, why Theron dances instead of strikes. Real wolves bleed. Real Alphas break and keep crawling.”

I knock her hand away. “Don’t touch me.”

“Or what?” The smile doesn’t reach her eyes. “You’ll tell your pets to growl?”

From the sidelines, Kade laughs, the sound like gravel in a meat grinder. “She’s not wrong, cub. The packs sharpening axes for winter solstice won’t care that your mates treat you like a porcelain doll. They’ll shatter you, string your entrails across the territory line, and fuck the openings just to see if you’re hollow inside.”

Theron snarls—a real one, teeth bared, the Blackpelt corruption flashing behind his charm. Grogan’s hand snaps up, warning him back. But I feel it through the bonds—the five of them vibrating with violence barely chained, protective instincts warring with the reality that Kade could probably take three of them at once.

“We appreciate the tactical assessment,” Grogan says, his voice strung tight as piano wire. “But Abby’s training progression—”

“I’ll train her.” Sera slices through his words, dismissive as a blade through tendon. Her eyes lock on mine, dark and depthless as wells leading nowhere good. “Properly. Without the sentimental attachment that makes them flinch when they should strike.” She leans closer, close enough that I smell her—copper, cold iron, expensive perfume masking something rotting. “Unless you’re too afraid to bleed for real? Little human?”

The trap gapes open. I see the teeth of it—the humiliation she’s planning, the way Hrollok’s pain spikes sharper with every second she ignores him, the calculus of her offer which is really a threat wearing helpfulness like a skin suit.

But beneath the malice, the truth rings clean and terrible.

They have been gentle. Rhett’s massive hands guiding my hips instead of crushing. Theron’s speed dialed back to my limitations. Grogan’s patience, his careful corrections, the way they all handle me like I’m already broken and they’re trying to preserve the fragments.

Tomorrow, Sera will try to actually break me. But at least I’ll know if the shards cut deep enough to matter.

“Fine.” The word tastes like blood from where I’ve bitten my cheek. “Tomorrow. Dawn.”

The reaction is immediate and violent.

“Absolutely not.” Theron’s hand clamps on my shoulder, fingers digging in with desperation. “She’s lethal, Abby. She crippled her last three sparring partners—”

“She’ll kill you,” Hrollok rasps from his tree line exile, his voice scraped raw, his eyes fixed on the dirt between us because looking at her would destroy him. “Not metaphorically. She’ll snap your neck and call it education.”

Sera’s smile widens, showing teeth too white, too sharp. “He knows me so well.”

“I said yes.” I shake off Theron, step away from Grogan’s reaching hands, hold firm against Rhett’s rumbling objection. “You want me to be Alpha? Alphas don’t hide behind their mates when things get sharp. They get sharp back.”

The men fall silent, struggle written in their postures. Kade’s scowl twitches toward something like respect. Sera studies me with renewed interest, predator recognizing prey that might bite.

“Tomorrow morning,” she purrs, stepping back into Kade’s orbit. His hand drops to her waist, proprietary and obscene, fingers spreading wide across her belly. I feel Hrollok’s anguish spike through the bond like a physical wound—jealousy and grief and remembered pleasure all toxically intertwined. “Don’t eat. You’ll only vomit it up when I rupture something.”

They leave like storm systems passing, taking the pressure with them but leaving behind damage—the ozone scent of violence deferred. Only when their engines snarl to life in the distance does Hrollok exhale. The sound is wet, torn, humiliated.

He slides down the oak trunk until his ass hits the dirt, long legs splayed, hands shaking where they grip his knees. He looks young suddenly. Broken.

Rhett moves toward him, that endless terrible gentleness in his massive scarred frame. He extends one hand toward Hrollok’s shoulder—

Hrollok snaps, fangs descending, a sound ripping from his throat that has no language, only warning. Rhett freezes. The rest of us do too. For three heartbeats, Hrollok crouches there, feral, exposed, his green eyes wet and wild and hating us for witnessing this.

Then he’s gone. Trees shudder in his wake. The bond screams with his absence, a high note of shame that won’t fade.

I stand in the center of my ruined circle, trembling now that the danger has passed, now that the adrenaline ebbs and leaves me cold.

Sera’s right. They’ve been protecting me. And tomorrow, protection ends.

“Abby.” Grogan’s voice is careful, too careful. “You don’t have to do this. We can leave tonight, find another—”

“I do.” I turn to face him, facing all of them. “I have to know if I’m the knife or the whetstone. If I break, I break. But I’d rather break training than break when Nadia comes to collect her debt.”

The silence stretches, filled with their fear and their arousal and their helplessness. Five wolves, one leash, and the woman holding it learning how to choke.

“Then we prepare,” Jarek says finally, clinical even in crisis. “Medical supplies. Bone setting. Blood transfusion protocols—”

“No.” I look toward where Hrollok disappeared, feeling his frayed thread in our constellation. “We let her come. And we find out exactly what I’m made of.”
