The Wrong Kind of Guy

Alessia's Perspective

Ch. 2 / 10 Nov 23, 2025

The morning air smelled faintly of syrup and coffee, mingling with the scent of cardboard boxes. Alessia Marino carefully stepped around the pile of unopened boxes in the living room, balancing two plates of pancakes as she entered the cramped kitchen. Her mom was at the stove, flipping another pancake, while her dad sat at the table with a mug of coffee in hand.

"Morning, sweetheart," her mom said, smiling brightly. "Did you get enough sleep?"

"Enough," Alessia replied, sliding one of the plates in front of her little sister, Nikki. The seven-year-old lit up at the sight of the fluffy pancakes, reaching for the syrup bottle eagerly.

"Thanks, Lessie!" Nikki chirped.

Alessia ruffled her little sister's short curls before sitting down. The room felt warm, not just from the heat of the stove, but from the quiet hum of her family. It was moments like this that reminded Alessia what she was fighting for.

Her gaze lingered on Nikki, who was humming to herself as she decorated her pancake with a smiley face of syrup. Despite the tubes, the pale skin, and the way her clothes seemed too big for her tiny frame, Nikki was always the light of the house.

"Excited for your first day?" her dad asked, breaking her thoughts.

Alessia hesitated. "Excited might not be the word," she admitted. "Nervous is closer."

Her dad's face softened. "You'll do great. They wouldn't have given you that scholarship if they didn't think so."

She nodded, trying to believe it. Westwood University was a world away from everything she'd ever known. The scholarship had been a dream come true, a chance to change everything for her family. If she graduated from Westwood, she could get a job that would pay for Nikki's treatments, pay off her parents' debts, and maybe—just maybe—give them all a little peace.

The sound of Nikki's fork clattering against her plate broke the moment. "Lessie, don't forget your promise!"

Alessia smiled. "I won't forget. I'm going to do my best, for you."

By the time they were in the car, Alessia was a bundle of nerves. Their old, beat-up car sputtered as it pulled into the pristine driveway of Westwood University. Shiny luxury cars and polished SUVs lined the parking lot. Students in expensive clothes lingered near the gates, their laughter carrying on the breeze.

As her dad brought the car to a stop, Alessia could feel the weight of the stares. Some students glanced at the car and turned away, whispering to each other. Others outright sneered, their perfectly styled hair and designer bags making her feel painfully out of place.

Her dad cleared his throat. "I can drop you off at my office if you want. It's closer to your classroom."

Alessia shook her head, forcing a smile. "It's okay, Dad. I'm here to study, not to impress anyone."

He smiled back, though his eyes were shadowed with worry. "That's my girl."

Taking a deep breath, Alessia stepped out of the car, gripping her bag tightly. The stares burned into her back, but she kept walking, her head held high. She didn't need their approval. She had a purpose.

Every step she took reminded her of why she was here—her family, Nikki, the future they all deserved. She would endure the whispers, the stares, and whatever else came her way. Nothing would stop her from succeeding.

Not here. Not now.
