The Taste of You

Chapter 25

Ch. 25 / 30 Feb 22, 2026

POV Raegan

The inspection is happening. Right now.

My hands work through the mother sauces with the muscle memory of a thousand repetitions.

Béchamel is smooth as silk. Velouté with the exact consistency Maxwell drilled into me during those late-night sessions. Hollandaise that could make a grown chef weep with its perfect emulsification.

This is it.

Everything we've worked for.

The first courses leave the pass flawlessly. Four courses down. The rhythm feels perfect, almost meditative.

The kitchen hums with the particular energy of excellence being achieved in real time.

Then the service doors swing open, and the manager appears with an expression that makes my stomach drop through the floor.

"We have a problem."

His voice carries the forced calm of someone delivering catastrophic news.

"The inspector's table has sent back multiple dishes. The béarnaise tasted rancid, and the reduction was completely inedible. He is requesting to speak with whoever prepared the sauces."

The world tilts sideways.

"That is impossible." The words escape before I can stop them. "I prepared those sauces myself. There is no way they went bad between my station and the table."

Maxwell crosses to the pass where returned plates sit like damning evidence. He tastes the béarnaise, and his entire body goes rigid.

"This is spoiled. Someone tampered with this sauce."

Relief floods through me. He understands. He knows I would never—

"Raegan." Maxwell turns to face me, and the accusation in his grey eyes stops my heart. "You were the only one with access to these sauces tonight."

My voice falters. "Chef, you cannot possibly think I did this."

"I think the inspector specifically identified your dishes." His jaw tightens into granite. "I think you are the only person in this kitchen with both the knowledge and the opportunity."

"Why would I destroy my own work?"

Jared pushes through the kitchen doors before I can continue.

"Because maybe you were never really on our side." His voice carries a chill I have never heard from him. "Winnie saw you talking to Armand Beaumont, Raegan."

My stomach lurches violently.

The alley. When Armand cornered me during my cigarette break.

"That was not what it looked like." I keep my voice steady, refusing to crumble. "Armand approached me. I told him to stay away."

"That is not what Winnie described." Jared moves closer. "She said you looked like you were negotiating. She said Armand walked away looking satisfied."

They exist in a world so far above ours that gravity works differently up there.

Scarlett's warning slams into me with the force of prophecy fulfilled. I pushed it away at the time, drunk on the fantasy that love could bridge the canyon between our worlds.

"And you believed her?" Something cold settles into my bones.

"I believe what I see in front of me." He gestures at the ruined plates. "Armand has wanted to destroy Lumière for months. And suddenly, during the most important inspection of our careers, your sauces fail?"

"Are you seriously asking me if I made some kind of deal with Armand?" My voice rises, sharp with disbelief. "Are you seriously suggesting I have been working against you this entire time?"

"I am asking you to explain how this happened."

But his eyes have already rendered their verdict. And that verdict carves something vital out of my chest.

Scarlett tried to warn me. She saw this coming from a mile away, and I called her paranoid. I told myself these men were different, that they saw me as an equal.

God, what an idiot I was.

Kobe appears at the edge of the chaos, and I turn to him with fragile, desperate hope. He has always been the one who sees me. He has to believe me.

"Rae, you have to understand how this looks." His voice lacks its usual warmth entirely. "If Armand offered you something—money for your own restaurant, protection for Elsie—would you really have turned him down twice?"

The question lands like a blade between my ribs.

Elsie. He is using Elsie against me.

The sister he visited every day, the girl whose hand he held through recovery—he is weaponizing my love for her.

"I did turn him down." My voice wavers, and I hate myself for it. "I turned him down because of—"

"Then explain the alley." Maxwell's grey eyes have turned to ice. "Explain why Winnie watched you having a private conversation with a man who wants us destroyed."

"Because that man does not take no for an answer." The words scrape past the tightness in my throat. "I was alone, and he appeared, and I handled it without running to any of you for protection because I have been handling things alone my entire life."

Silence. No softening.

No recognition of the truth in my voice.

The higher you climb, the harder the fall, and you're scaling Everest without oxygen right now.

I climbed. I fell.

And now I am lying at the bottom of the mountain while the men I loved stare down at me from their untouchable heights.

"You know me." The words come out quieter now. "You have been inside my home, met my sister, shared my bed. You have seen parts of me I do not show anyone. And this—" I gesture at the accusation hanging in the air, "—this is what you think I am capable of?"

Maxwell's jaw works, but he does not speak.

"The evidence points in your direction, Raegan," Jared says, and the clinical detachment in his voice is worse than anger. "Your sauces. Your station. Your ambition. Your connection to Armand."

"My connection to Armand?" A bitter laugh escapes me. "A connection that exists because Winnie has been trying to get rid of me?"

"This is not about Winnie."

"Oh, this is entirely about Winnie." My hands curl into fists at my sides. "She fed you exactly what she wanted you to believe, and you swallowed it without even giving me the chance to defend myself before you decided I was guilty."

They exist in a world so far above ours.

Of course they believed her. Winnie speaks their language, moves through their circles, belongs to their tribe in ways I never could.

"We are giving you a chance right now." Kobe spreads his hands. "So defend yourself. Tell us who else could have done this."

"I do not know who did this." The admission burns, but I refuse to look away. "What I know is that it was not me. And the fact that my word is not enough tells me exactly how much you think of me."

The kitchen has gone silent around us.

Every line cook stands frozen, pretending not to witness the complete implosion of whatever we built together.

They were supposed to believe me. Not because I can prove my innocence, but because you know who I am.

Just to believe me, because that is what love is supposed to mean.

I search their faces for any crack in the accusation. Any flicker of the men who held me, kissed me, whispered promises against my skin.

I find nothing but suspicion staring back.

Tears burn behind my eyes, but I will not let them fall. Not here. Not in front of them.

I untie my apron with trembling fingers and let it drop to the floor.

"Someone sabotaged those sauces." I hold each of their gazes in turn—Maxwell's granite jaw, Kobe's averted eyes, Jared's poisoned certainty. "Someone wanted to destroy me, and you handed them exactly what they wanted. Congratulations."

I straighten my spine, armor snapping into place around the shattered thing in my chest.

"I quit."
