The Taste of You

Chapter 21

Ch. 21 / 30 Feb 22, 2026

"If you burn my sister's apartment down, I'm telling everyone you cry during Pixar movies."

Elsie's voice carries from the living room where she has positioned herself like a queen holding court. Maxwell stands at my tiny stove, sleeves rolled to his elbows.

"I do not cry during Pixar movies," Kobe protests from his spot on the floor, where Elsie has somehow convinced him to let her practice braiding techniques on his hair. "I experience emotional resonance appropriate to the narrative."

"He sobbed through the first ten minutes of Up," Jared confirms from the armchair. "I have video evidence from a family screening three years ago."

"That scene is objectively devastating, and anyone who doesn't cry is a sociopath." Kobe winces as Elsie tugs a strand too hard. "Gentle, tiny demon. Some of us need this hair for our careers."

The domesticity of the scene wraps around my chest and squeezes until breathing requires conscious effort.

Three men who should not fit in my cramped apartment somehow fill every corner with warmth and laughter and the particular chaos that follows them wherever they go.

"Dinner's ready," Maxwell announces, and the authority in his voice makes everyone move without question. Even Elsie, who typically responds to commands with elaborate eye-rolls, rises from her position and helps clear the coffee table.

We eat on mismatched plates with silverware that does not match either, and not a single one of them comments on the obvious disparity between this meal and the elegant settings they usually inhabit.

"This is delicious," Elsie signs and speaks simultaneously, the dual communication becoming more natural each day. "But Maxwell, you should know my sister has been holding out on us. She makes this incredible beef bourguignon that I would literally commit crimes for."

"Is that so?" Maxwell's eyebrow arches in my direction, professional curiosity sparking in those grey eyes. "You have been hiding recipes from me, Delacroix?"

"Some things are sacred." I throw a napkin at Elsie's head. "And some sisters cannot keep their mouths shut."

"She also talks to the vegetables when she thinks nobody is listening," Elsie adds, catching the napkin mid-air with a wicked grin. "Very encouraging pep talks. The carrots especially seem to respond well."

"Traitor." I point my fork at her. "See if I ever make you birthday cake again."

"You would never deprive me of that cake and we both know it." Elsie grins, then turns to Maxwell with exaggerated innocence. "So, are all three of you her boyfriends, or is there some kind of schedule I should know about?"

The question detonates across the table with the subtlety of a grenade lobbed into a china shop.

Three sets of male eyes snap to mine simultaneously, each carrying a different flavor of panic I am absolutely not equipped to address.

"Elsie," I choke out, face burning.

"What? I'm not blind."

She shrugs with the particular nonchalance of a teenager who knows exactly how much chaos she's causing and finds it delightful.

"Anyway, I'm going to bed early. Dr. Reeves says I need to rest my auditory processing, and I have these amazing noise-canceling headphones that block literally everything."

The emphasis she places on everything carries enough subtext to fill a doctoral thesis.

She rises from the table with the dignity of someone who has just executed a flawless strategic maneuver. "Have fun, Rae."

She kisses my cheek, waves at the three men who look equal parts amused and impressed, and disappears into her bedroom with the theatrical finality of a curtain dropping on Act One.

Silence stretches across the table.

"Your sister," Kobe says slowly, "is terrifying."

"She gets it from me." I stand, gathering plates with hands that tremble slightly. "I need me five minutes."

The bathroom mirror reflects someone I barely recognize anymore. The woman staring back at me has color in her cheeks and light in her eyes that has been missing for years.

She looks like someone who is wanted. Someone who is choosing, rather than being chosen.

I strip off my casual clothes and reach for the bag I hid beneath the sink this morning. The lingerie inside is red, the color of intention and desire and deliberate choice.

Nothing like the virgin-white lace Armand sent to costume me for my own degradation.

This belongs to me. This is mine.

When I step back into the living room, conversation dies instantly. Three pairs of eyes track my movements with the intensity of predators who have just spotted prey walking willingly into their territory.

"Jared's penthouse?" I ask, openly flirting.

The car ride passes in a blur of tangled limbs and desperate mouths.

Kobe's lips find my neck while Maxwell's hands explore the red lace beneath my coat. Jared watches from the driver's seat, knuckles white against the steering wheel, jaw tight with restraint that looks physically painful.

"Eyes on the road," I manage between gasps. "I would prefer to survive the evening."

"You are going to be the death of me regardless," he mutters, but his gaze returns to the Manhattan streets.

The penthouse elevator feels smaller than I remember. By the time the doors slide open, tension crackles between the three of them with enough voltage to power the entire building.

Maxwell's hand lands on my waist. Kobe steps closer from behind. Jared reaches for my face.

"Stop." The command leaves my mouth before I consciously form the thought, and all three men freeze instantly. "Before we go any further, we need to address something."

"What is it?" Jared's voice comes out rough, strained.

"You three." I look at each of them in turn, holding their gazes until they understand I am serious. "The jealousy, the competition, the constant measuring of who gets more of my attention. It ends tonight."

"Raegan, we are not competing," Maxwell starts, but I cut him off with a raised hand.

"You are. You all are. And I understand why, because this is unconventional and complicated and none of us have a roadmap for whatever this is."

I step back, putting distance between us.

"But I refuse to be a prize you fight over. I am not territory to be conquered or divided."

Silence hangs heavy in the air.

"You three need to learn to share without competing,"

I continue, and my fingers find the belt of my coat. A smile tugs at my lips as I watch their gazes drop to track the movement.

"So here is what is going to happen. You are going to watch me. You do not move. You do not touch. Not me, not yourselves, not each other."

The coat falls to the floor.

Their reactions hit me like a physical force. Maxwell's breath catches audibly. Kobe's amber eyes darken to something almost predatory. Jared makes a sound in the back of his throat that should be illegal.

"See, here's the thing." I settle onto the massive bed and let my legs fall open, red lace a stark contrast against the white sheets. My voice drops to something honeyed and teasing. "I have been taking care of myself for a very long time. And I am exceptionally good at it."

My hand traces down my stomach, slow and deliberate, and the power of their helpless attention makes me feel invincible. Kobe takes a half-step forward, and I pause, arching an eyebrow at him.

"Ah-ah." I click my tongue, fighting a grin. "Patience, pretty boy. You'll get your turn if you behave."

He stops like he has hit an invisible wall, a tortured groan escaping his throat.

"Watch," I purr, letting my fingers drift lower. "Learn what you could be doing right now if you weren't so busy measuring yourselves against each other."

Three pairs of hungry eyes burn against my skin as I touch myself, and the intoxication of control rushes through my veins like the finest champagne.

I take my time, building the pleasure slowly, deliberately, letting them see exactly what I like, exactly how I want to be touched. Their suffering is palpable—three powerful men reduced to trembling statues by a woman who refuses to need them.

When I finally shatter, their names tear from my throat in a broken chorus.

My eyes open to find them trembling with restraint, every muscle coiled tight, waiting for permission they need but have not yet received.

"Now," I breathe.
