POV: Lyra
The cargo bay was dark, illuminated only by emergency running lights that cast everything in bloody red. I moved through shadows, every sense alert, skin cycling through combat-ready silver.
The "friend" had been Ethan—the security guard who owed me favors. He'd provided override codes and a distraction, asking no questions. Juan and Hale were supposed to meet me at Junction 7, freed from their cells through the ventilation system I'd hacked.
I was almost there when footsteps echoed behind me.
I spun, hand on my concealed blade—and found Sebastian Cummings blocking the corridor.
"Going somewhere, Commander?" His pathways pulsed with ugly satisfaction. "Strange time for a walk."
"Move aside, Mr. Cummings."
"I don't think so." He stepped closer. "Sasha was right—you're planning to run. Can't blame you, honestly. When Lady Vespera arrives with the Emperor's child in her belly, there won't be room for mining colony seconds."
"Whatever you're planning," I said carefully, "it won't work. Let me pass."
"Or what? You'll call your Emperor? He's busy dealing with the noble he imprisoned for insulting you. Quite the scandal, that. Some are calling it favoritism despite both parties being punished. Others are saying it proves the Kaelari match was just for show."
Keep him talking. Juan and Hale are almost to the junction.
"What do you want, Sebastian?"
"Honestly?" His pathways shifted to something almost vulnerable. "I want you to admit I was right. That this bond with him was a mistake. That you should have stayed with me."
"You betrayed me."
"And he'll betray you worse." He stepped closer, close enough to touch. "At least I never got another female pregnant while pursuing you."
The blade was in my hand before I consciously reached for it. Sebastian stumbled back, pathways flooding with fear.
"Lyra—"
"Walk away." My voice came out deadly calm. "Now. Before I forget you're not worth killing."
He fled.
I continued to Junction 7, heart hammering. Juan and Hale were already there, covered in ventilation dust, their pathways flooding with relief when they saw me.
"Lyra." Juan pulled me into a crushing embrace. "We need to move. The guards—"
"This way." I led them toward the cargo bay, toward the supply shuttle, toward freedom.
We were ten meters from the shuttle when the lights came on.
Orion stood in the cargo bay entrance, pathways pulsing that impossible purple, his expression unreadable. Alone. No guards, no witnesses, just the Emperor and three escaped prisoners.
"Are you heading somewhere?"
Juan and Hale went rigid behind me. I stepped forward, positioning myself between them and the most powerful being in the galaxy.
"Let them go." My voice didn't waver. "They're innocent. The Lyrokan noble provoked them."
"I know." Orion's pathways flickered. "I've already ordered their release and Lord Theron's extended detention. They're technically free."
"Then why are you here?"
"Because you were leaving." The words cracked with something raw. "Running. Without even—" He stopped, pathways cycling through purple to black to something vulnerable I'd never seen. "Were you going to tell me?"
"There's nothing to tell." My skin shifted to cold grey. "Your contracted bride arrives tomorrow. She carries your heir. My purpose here is finished."
His pathways went shock-white. "My what?"
"Lady Vespera. The pregnancy. I heard the nobles discussing it."
For a long moment, he simply stared at me. Then he laughed—a broken, hollow sound that echoed off the cargo bay walls.
"Lyra." He moved toward me, and I held my ground even as neural sparks crackled through the air between us. "There is no pregnancy. Lady Vespera has been contracted to me since childhood, yes—an arrangement my father made that I've been trying to legally dissolve for three cycles. I have never touched her. Never wanted to."
"The nobles said—"
"The nobles lie." He stopped an arm's length away, pathways pulsing with desperate sincerity. "She spreads rumors to strengthen her claim. Her family threatens scandal if I break the contract. But I've never—Lyra, look at me."
My eyes met his, and through the bond—that void-cursed connection I couldn't sever—I felt his truth. No deception. No hidden agenda. Just a male drowning in bureaucratic nightmares, trapped by his father's choices, desperately trying to reach the one person he actually wanted.
"The only child I want," he said quietly, "is yours."
My skin flushed rose before I could stop it.
Behind me, I heard Juan's sharp intake of breath. Hale's soft "void-black [damn]."
"Orion—"
"I've been fighting to dissolve the contract since I felt our bond form." He stepped closer, close enough to touch. "I wasn't pursuing you while betrothed—I was pursuing you because I finally had reason to break free. You're not my second choice, Lyra. You're my only choice."
The words shattered something inside me.
"I don't—" My voice cracked. "I can't—"
His hand cupped my face, and the neural sparks turned to wildfire. Through the bond, his desire flooded me—not just physical, but emotional. He wanted to wake up next to me. Wanted to watch my skin shift colors when I laughed. Wanted children with my eyes and his pathways. Wanted forever.
"Tell me to stop," he whispered, his lips brushing mine. "Tell me you don't want this."
I couldn't. The lie wouldn't form.
"Juan, Hale." My voice came out strangled. "The shuttle. Leave."
"Lyra—" Juan started.
"Now."
I heard them moving, heard their footsteps retreating, heard the shuttle's hatch seal behind them. Knew they were watching through the viewport. Couldn't bring myself to care.
Orion's mouth found mine, and the universe ended.
The kiss wasn't gentle—it was desperate, hungry, centuries of loneliness pouring through our bond as consciousness merged completely. My back hit the cargo bay wall. His body pressed against mine, and I felt everything: his need, his love, his absolute certainty that I was his.
My skin cycled through colors neither of us could name—rose to crimson to gold to that impossible pearl. His pathways blazed purple-white, brighter than stars.
"Lyra." My name in his mouth sounded like salvation. "Tell me this is real. Tell me you're staying."
"I'm staying."
His hands found the seals of my bio-suit. The cargo bay was freezing, but everywhere he touched burned. I wanted—void help me, I wanted everything. His mouth on my throat, my shoulder, the scar on my arm. Neural sparks cascading through my system until thought became impossible.
Through the bond, a desperate hope I'd never admitted: Let this work. Let me conceive. Give me something that's mine.
He heard it—felt it—and his pathways blazed with fierce joy. "Yes," he breathed against my skin. "Whatever you want. Everything you want."
He lifted me effortlessly, and I wrapped around him like gravity itself demanded it. The connection between us opened completely—no shields, no barriers, just two consciousness becoming one.
When we finally came together, my skin went supernova—every color in the spectrum cascading outward in waves I couldn't control. His pathways answered, purple-white light filling the cargo bay until we were the only stars in an empty void.
Through the viewport, I caught a glimpse of Juan's shocked face, Hale's knowing smile. They'd seen everything. Would probably never let me forget it.
I didn't care.
In this moment, with Orion's consciousness merged with mine, with hope burning where cynicism used to live, with the possibility of a child—our child—taking root...
Match number six.
