The Rejected Cleopatra

The Shadow of the Past

Ch. 8 / 20 May 02, 2026

The scent of roasted lamb and spiced figs filled the air as Akhenaten sat across from his wife, Nefertari, in the grand dining hall. The torches flickered, casting a golden glow upon the polished stone walls, the jewels on her wrists glistening as she reached for her goblet.

"You’ve been quiet tonight, my love," she mused, tilting her head.

Akhenaten smirked, swirling the wine in his cup. "I have much on my mind."

She leaned forward, eyes gleaming with intrigue. "Does it concern our throne?"

"Our throne is secure," he assured her. "It is our wealth I wish to discuss."

Her expression shifted from curiosity to anticipation.

When the meal ended, Akhenaten stood and offered his hand. "Come," he whispered. "I have something to show you."

Nefertari grinned and rose gracefully, allowing him to lead her through the dim corridors. They moved in silence, past towering statues and flickering sconces, until they reached a discreet doorway.

With a swift push, the hidden passage opened, revealing a stone stairway that spiraled downward.

"Where are we going?" she whispered, excitement lacing her voice.

"You’ll see."

The underground chamber was vast, its walls lined with gold treasures, chests brimming with jewels, and ancient artifacts gleaming under the soft glow of oil lamps.

Her eyes widened. "Akhenaten…"

"This," he said, sweeping his hand across the room, "is our true wealth. No thief, no enemy, no fallen queen can take it from us."

Nefertari stepped forward, trailing her fingers over a golden chalice. "Magnificent," she breathed.

Akhenaten smirked. "I have also moved all of Cleopatra’s belongings here."

At the mention of that name, her eyes darkened, but a slow smile curved her lips. "You are a brilliant man."

She moved toward him, her hands grazing his chest as she pressed against him. "And how shall I reward my king?" she purred.

His hands found her hips, pulling her closer. "I can think of a few ways."

Her lips parted, and just as they were about to meet, a rapid echo of footsteps broke the moment.

Nefertari stiffened. "Who dares disturb us?"

Akhenaten’s eyes flashed with fury. He pulled away, grasping her wrist as he led her out swiftly. No one could discover this chamber—no one.

They emerged from the passage, the heavy stone door sealing behind them just as five guards stumbled into the hall. Their faces were bloodied, their tunics torn.

Akhenaten’s jaw clenched. "Speak."

The guards dropped to one knee. "Forgive us, my Pharaoh. There has been… talk."

"Talk?" he repeated coldly.

One of the guards wiped blood from his brow. "The people whisper of Queen Cleopatra. When we asked them not to, they threw stones at us."

Nefertari scoffed. "Cleopatra?"

Akhenaten’s gaze darkened. "She is no queen. She is a traitor. A disgrace."

The guard hesitated before continuing, "They say… she lives."

A deadly silence filled the chamber.

Akhenaten’s fingers curled into fists. "Impossible. She was sold, broken, discarded."

"That is what we believed," another guard admitted. "But the people speak of her as if she walks among them. They say she is here. In Egypt."
