The Rejected Cleopatra

The Awakening of a Queen

Ch. 17 / 20 May 02, 2026

Cleopatra’s eyes fluttered open to the suffocating darkness of the cave. Her head pounded, her limbs felt weak, and the stale air made her throat dry.

She groaned and pushed herself up on shaky arms, glancing around. The dim torchlight revealed rough walls covered in carvings—hieroglyphics of her father and the Kings of Egypt before him. Her breath hitched.

Where was she?

As she turned, her foot struck something.

A body.

Her heart pounded as she peered down and gasped. Kadesh.

His lifeless eyes stared blankly at the ceiling, his body sprawled across the cave floor. Blood stained his robes.

Memories rushed back in an overwhelming wave.

She had walked out of the tent because someone had came to tell her that Maahes was looking for her when strong arms seized her from behind.

The last thing she saw was Kadesh holding a small vial of powder.

Akhenaten.

Her hands clenched into fists. He had sent Kadesh to kill her.

A sudden sound outside made her freeze. Clashing swords. Battle cries.

She rushed toward the cave’s opening, her heart pounding.

The sight before her was chaos—Maahes and his allies locked in battle with Akhenaten’s warriors. Blades flashed, men grunted as they swung their weapons. The air smelled of blood and sweat.

A warrior lunged at Maahes, but he dodged effortlessly, slicing the man down in one swift motion. Another came at him, and he parried the attack, his expression fierce.

Cleopatra’s mind raced. She had to do something.

She wasn’t just a Queen in name—she was the daughter of Ptolemy. She had the blood of Pharaohs running through her veins. This was her fight.

She remembered the lesson Maahes had taught her the night before.

A trick—one she had planned to use in battle against Akhenaten’s forces.

If she truly was Egypt’s rightful ruler, it would work.

She inhaled deeply and let out a piercing scream.

The sound echoed across the battlefield, sharp and commanding.

The fighting halted.

Swords stilled mid-air. Warriors turned, their faces etched with confusion and shock. The only sounds left were the ragged breaths of the fighters and the distant howling of the wind.

Cleopatra stepped forward, her golden hair illuminated by the setting sun, her stance regal. Her voice rang out with authority:

"I am Queen Cleopatra. Daughter of Ptolemy.

"If I am the rightful heir to Egypt’s throne, then I command you—drop your swords and fight for justice!"

The warriors exchanged uneasy glances, their grips tightening on their weapons.

Silence stretched between them.

Then—Maahes called out, his voice urgent. "Cleopatra, get back!"

But she wasn’t done.

Lifting her right hand, she closed her fingers into a tight fist.

A sudden gust of wind howled through the battlefield, swirling the dust into a golden haze. A sword materialized in her grasp, shimmering in the dimming light.

Gasps rippled through the warriors. Magic.

Cleopatra raised the sword high, her eyes blazing with determination. "Swear your loyalty to me, and I swear on the gods of Egypt—I will lead you to victory!"

A moment of hesitation.

Then, one warrior—one of Akhenaten’s finest—fell to his knees.

"Queen, to you we bow!" he cried.

Another dropped.

Then another.

One by one, they knelt before her, slamming their fists against their chests in salute.

"Queen, to you we belong!"

A tremor ran through Cleopatra’s body as she realized what had just happened.

She had won them over.

Maahes exhaled sharply, shaking his head in disbelief before a slow smirk spread across his face.

"This," he muttered, "is the Cleopatra I was waiting to see."

And as the last of the warriors bowed, Cleopatra lifted her sword higher, knowing that the real battle had just begun.
