The King’s Servant, The Alpha’s Queen

Chapter 27

Ch. 27 / 30 Feb 27, 2026

POV: Francesca

The moment Luka’s arms wrapped around me, the world seemed to loosen its grip.

I held him tightly, my hands clutching at his shoulders, his back, anywhere I could touch to reassure myself that he was truly here. He was solid beneath my palms, warm and alive, and when his breath hitched against my neck I felt something inside me finally give way.

Years of fear, of restraint, of pain held too carefully, broke apart all at once.

“My son,” I whispered, burying my face against his shoulder. “You’re here. You’re safe.”

Luka’s arms tightened around me, his strength unmistakable now, no longer restrained or confused. “And so are you,” he said quietly.

I pulled back just enough to look at him properly. Blood streaked his skin, sweat darkened his hair, and his eyes—those eyes—burned with a clarity I had never seen before. Not obedience or doubt. Awareness.

Something shifted deep inside me, subtle and unmistakable. The ache that had lived in my bones for thirteen years was gone.

I inhaled sharply, testing it, waiting for the familiar warning that had always followed any moment too close to him. It did not come. No tightening in my chest. No invisible barrier clawing me back. The curse—Cassian’s curse—had vanished as completely as the man himself.

“It’s gone,” I whispered.

Wilhelm stepped closer, his hand settling at my back as if he had sensed the same thing. “What is?” he asked.

“The curse,” I said, my voice shaking with disbelief. “I can stand here with him. I can touch him and I can breathe.”

Luka frowned slightly, then closed his eyes. I watched as his posture shifted, his awareness turning inward. When he opened them again, something feral and proud flickered across his face.

“My wolf is awake,” he said. “Not fighting me. It’s… part of me.”

Wilhelm’s gaze softened. “As it should be.”

Luka hesitated, then continued, “I can feel both of you. Like… roots. Like the truth.”

Tears burned my eyes again, but this time they did not hurt.

Around us, the courtyard had gone quiet in a way that felt unreal after so much chaos. Soldiers stood frozen, weapons lowered, uncertainty rippling through their ranks as Cassian’s body lay where he had fallen.

The banners above us snapped in the wind, and somewhere a wounded wolf howled mournfully, the sound echoing against the stone.

Wilhelm stepped forward, his presence commanding without effort. He lifted his voice, and it carried across the courtyard with the authority of something long denied but never extinguished.

“Cassian is dead,” he declared. “The usurper who ruled through fear and lies has fallen.”

Murmurs spread instantly, fear and relief tangling together.

“I am Wilhelm of the old blood,” he continued. “The rightful king of this realm. I reclaim my throne.”

Silence followed, heavy and charged. Then one soldier dropped to his knees.

Another followed. And one more.

The sound of armor striking stone rippled outward until the courtyard was filled with kneeling figures. Some hesitated, some resisted, but the tide had turned. Truth had weight, and blood remembered.

Wilhelm turned to me, his hand finding mine. “Stand with me,” he said.

I lifted my chin and stepped forward beside him, my voice steady as I spoke. “I am Francesca,” I said. “Mate to the king. Mother of his heir. And I claim my place as queen.”

The word settled into me like something that had always belonged there.

Luka stood between us, his shoulders squared, his gaze unwavering as he looked out at the kingdom that had shaped him through cruelty and silence. He did not bow. He did not need to.

The crown was lifted from the stone where it had fallen. Wilhelm did not place it on his head immediately. Instead, he took my hand again and turned away from the courtyard.

“Come,” he said. “There is more this castle has hidden from us.”

We moved through the halls together, Luka close at our side, the sounds of battle fading behind us as order slowly returned. The royal bedchamber loomed ahead, its doors ajar, the remnants of Rosalinda’s careful opulence still clinging to the space.

As we crossed the threshold, something caught my eye. A seam in the wall, nearly invisible beneath carved wood and gilded panels.

“Wilhelm,” I murmured, nodding toward it.

He followed my gaze, his brow furrowing. “That shouldn’t be there.”

Together, we pressed against the panel. It shifted with surprising ease, revealing a narrow passage descending into darkness. Cold air rushed up to meet us, carrying the scent of old stone and something ancient.

We took torches from the wall and stepped inside.

The passage opened into a hidden chamber carved deep beneath the castle, its walls covered in an enormous fresco. The colors were faded but unmistakable, painted with a reverence that stole my breath.

Wilhelm and I stood at the center, rendered larger than life, our hands joined.

Between us stood a child, dark-haired and strong, his wolf form painted beside him as clearly as his human one. Around us, symbols of the old bloodline intertwined with lunar sigils and runes of protection.

“This… this is us,” I whispered.

Wilhelm’s hand tightened around mine. “This was painted long before we were born.”

At the bottom of the fresco, an ancient script curved across the stone. Wilhelm knelt to read it aloud, his voice quiet but steady.

“When the true rulers take the throne, the curse will be lifted.”

A chill ran through me.

“The curse,” Wilhelm repeated slowly. “What curse?”

Before I could answer, a voice echoed softly behind us. “This isn’t over.”

I spun around, my heart leaping into my throat.

An old healer stood at the entrance to the chamber, her gray hair loose around her shoulders, a bundle of herbs cradled in her arms. Her expression was neither fearful nor hostile—only solemn, as if she had been waiting for this moment far longer than we had.

“There are older bindings than Cassian’s,” she said calmly. “And not all of them break so easily.”

The torches flickered. The throne had been reclaimed—but the story was not yet finished.
