The King’s Servant, The Alpha’s Queen

Chapter 25

Ch. 25 / 30 Feb 27, 2026

POV: Luka

The vault was carved deep beneath the castle, hollowed out of stone that smelled of damp earth and old magic.

Water seeped through the walls in thin, dark lines, and the air carried the sour tang of iron and mildew. A handful of torches burned weakly in iron brackets, their flames trembling as if afraid of the place. Skins lay scattered across the floor, stiff with age, thrown there without care for comfort or dignity.

This place was meant to break wolves.

Heavy shackles circled my wrists, the iron etched with runes that pulsed faintly whenever I moved. Each step I took sent a dull clink through the chamber, a reminder that strength alone would not free me. I had already tested the chains until my shoulders burned and my fingers went numb. The magic held fast, cold and patient.

I paced anyway.

Above me, the castle trembled. Distant shouts, the clash of steel, the deep echo of howls filtered down through layers of stone. War had reached the walls, and I was buried beneath it like something already forgotten.

I slammed my fist into the wall, pain flaring up my arm. It did nothing to ease the pressure building inside my chest.

The vault did not only restrain my body. It reached inside me, pressing against something I had spent my life keeping quiet. Every surge of anger made the runes flare brighter, and every flare forced my wolf closer to the surface.

Heat gathered beneath my ribs. My senses sharpened until the smell of damp stone and smoke made my stomach twist. My breathing grew rough, and a low sound vibrated in my chest before I could stop it.

I growled. The sound startled me almost as much as the answering pulse inside my blood.

My wolf stirred, slow and powerful, as if waking from a long, unwilling sleep. Muscles tightened, strength flooding my limbs, and the chains responded instantly, their magic biting down hard.

I snarled and grabbed my shirt, tearing the fabric apart with a sharp, furious motion. The act was pointless, but I needed something to give. The torches flickered violently, shadows leaping across the walls.

Then I heard it. A faint scrape near the door.

I froze, every instinct flaring. My head snapped toward the sound, nostrils flaring as a scent reached me that did not belong in this place. Lavender. Soap. Fear.

The door creaked open. Emerika slipped inside and shut it quickly behind her, her back pressed flat to the stone as if she expected it to collapse on her.

She carried a small lantern in one hand and a ring of keys in the other. Her red hair had come loose from its braid, strands clinging to her damp cheeks. Her blue eyes were wide and shining with terror.

“What are you doing here?” I demanded, my voice hoarse.

She flinched but forced herself to step forward. “I came to get you out,” she whispered. “Please, don’t be angry.”

“You shouldn’t be here,” I said, chains dragging as I took a step toward her. “If they find you—”

“They won’t,” she interrupted quickly, lifting the keys. “Everyone ran toward the courtyard. No one is guarding the lower halls.”

I stared at her, disbelief colliding with something far more dangerous. “Why?” I asked. “After everything, why risk this?”

Her hands shook. “I couldn’t leave you,” she said. “You listened to me. And… you believed me.”

The words struck harder than I expected. I took another step, the runes flaring faintly, and Emerika stopped, her breath hitching.

“Please,” she said, voice trembling. “I’m not your enemy.”

The bond snapped into awareness before I understood what it was. A pull tightened between us, sudden and undeniable. My pulse stuttered, and Emerika’s eyes widened as if she felt it too.

She approached again, slower now. “Let me help,” she whispered. She knelt and reached for the shackles, her fingers brushing my skin.

Heat exploded through me. I gasped, my wolf surging violently. My hand shot out and caught her wrist, not hard, not cruel, but instinctive. Her pulse fluttered beneath my grip.

Emerika froze, then whispered, “You felt that too.”

“Yes,” I said, my voice low and shaken.

The presence inside me surged forward, demanding recognition. I leaned down, my senses overwhelmed by her scent, her fear, her determination. My fangs extended without conscious thought.

“Tell me you’re not afraid,” I said.

She swallowed hard. “I am,” she admitted. “But I’m still here.”

That was enough.

I pulled her close and bit her, careful and precise. Emerika gasped, her hands clutching my arms as heat flooded between us. The bond snapped into place with staggering force, and for a heartbeat I felt everything she felt—terror giving way to relief, loneliness turning into belonging.

She trembled against me. “What did you do?”

“I marked you,” I said, stunned by the certainty in my own voice. “You’re my mate.”

Tears slid down her cheeks, but she was smiling. “I thought true mates were stories,” she whispered.

“They’re real,” I replied. “And you’re mine.”

She reached for the keys again, hands unsteady. “I still need to free you.”

“I’m leaving,” I said firmly, “but not without you. I will marry you! No one will ever use you again.”

She stared at me, overwhelmed. “Luka…”

“This is my choice,” I said quietly. “The first one that’s ever been mine.”

After a long moment, she nodded. “Then I’m yours.”

I kissed her, desperate and unrestrained, and she kissed me back with equal urgency, her hands finding my face as if she needed to convince herself I was real.

The moment our mouths met, the vault vanished, and all I could feel was heat and hunger and the fierce certainty of the bond tightening around us like a vow. I drew her closer until her breath caught, until her body melted against mine, trembling with the same aching need.

We sank down onto the skins together, the vault’s cold forgotten as the bond guided us, binding body and soul. Desire and fate tangled until there was no separating them, until even silence became intimate, filled with her soft gasps and the way my name left her lips like a prayer.

I held her as though the world might take her away if I loosened my arms, and she clung to me as if she had been searching for home and finally found it.

When we finally lay still, her head rested against my shoulder, her marked skin glowing faintly in the torchlight, and I kissed her hair again and again as if gratitude could be pressed into every breath.

The vault remained dark and damp, war still raging above us, but inside me something had changed forever.

My wolf was awake. And I had found my mate in the place meant to cage me.
