Watching as Gale, Jett, and Rune leave the guest house, I wonder just how in the world did I get lucky enough to find all of the people Alpha Valor is hunting for in one Pack. As far as we knew, Rune and Brynlee had been spotted leaving Onix Moon, now named Shadow Rose, after Alpha Viren was killed by the now Alpha Titus. From there, our men informed us that Brynlee and Rune took refuge in Crescent Phoenix as it is closest Pack to Shadow Rose.
Imagine my shock when I climbed off the bus to find Asteria, Gale, Jett, Brynlee, Rune, and Caspian standing in the crowd of wolves as they welcomed the Rogues sent by the Council and the Crescent Phoenix Council Representative Alastor and his men to the Pack while we were shown to the guest house to get settled in by a few Warriors and Omegas. It wasn’t till the welcome dinner that I was told that Asteria is the mysterious Alpha Rose and her Beta – Beta Lilac – is Brynlee herself. It seems that there is more to why these two ladies kept their identity hidden and I have a feeling it has something to do with Alpha Valor and his tyranny.
“Devlyn?” Jumping back from the curtain, I turn to find Carolyn waiting by the door, her hair combed back into a braid and her bright eyes staring at me with hope. Wondering why she is here; I leave the window and walk towards the girl that keeps clinging to me despite my obvious annoyance towards her.
“Do you need anything?” I ask Carolyn, her face lighting up with a smile.
“Actually, I was wondering if you wanted to explore the Pack with me. Miss Milan says she will show us around.” Carolyn answers, reaching out and taking my hand. I glare at her, roughly taking my hand back from her grasp before looking over my shoulder and back at the window. I have a feeling that Gale and Rune recognize me but I can’t be sure. I need to call Alpha Valor and soon to update him on the situation before I can walk around Crescent Phoenix freely.
“I have a bit of a headache and was just about to rest.” I lie to the she-wolf, turning back to see her smile fall.
“How about we go to the Pack House later tonight for dinner? We can then tell Beta Brynlee the role we would like when it is our turn to join the Pack.” I suggest. This seems to be the right move as Carolyn lights up once more and I inwardly think that whoever ends up as her Mate will have an easy time handling Carolyn.
“Okay, sounds good. Get some rest and I will come get you when I am back from the tour.” With that, Carolyn turns on her heels and rushes away. She is a nice girl with a nice body, one I wouldn’t have minded fucking senseless with how trusting and naïve she is. But she is too clingy for my liking and I have a feeling that if I gave in and fucked her, she would become clingier until I either marked her as mine or she finds her Goddess given Mate.
Closing my door and slinking towards my bed, I grab the phone from underneath the mattress and dial the only number programmed into it. While I wait for the other person to pick up, I reminisce about how lucky I was to have run into Carolyn when I did.
Meeting her was both a blessing and a curse for me. On one hand, people trusted me due to the bubbly nature of Carolyn and her unwavering trust in me, and gave me the opportunities I needed to spy for Alpha Valor. On the other hand, it became hard to report my findings to him and finish the mission I was forced into. There were times I would slip away to the bathroom just to send a quick text to Valor of my reports before returning to Carolyn’s side and resuming my act of pretending to be a Rogue who was scared and weary of the world.
“Devlyn, where the hell have you been?!” Alpha Valor shouts as soon as the call clicks into place. I wince, holding the phone away from my ear for a moment while I suppress my anger.
“I am sorry for my delay in relaying information, Alpha.” I manage to reply as calmly as I can. I can’t anger this man considering I am still under the blood pact and any slight towards Alpha Valor would cause me to suffer.
“I was stuck on a bus full of wolves and then was busy settling into Crescent Phoenix so my report has been delayed until now.” I continue, getting a huff of annoyance in return from Valor.
“I guess I can let this slight slide then.” He grumbles, his anger clear as day even over a call.
“Do you have any news for me?” Alpha Valor demands a second later. I take a deep breath before replying, knowing that if I withhold anything, the blood pact will punish me.
“I do.” I confirm, looking towards the door. I know a war will come with my words and Alpha Valor and Tanya will begin marching down here as soon as possible to kill Asteria, Brynlee, and Rune. As guilty as I feel about this, I need to think of my own freedom. Of finding my Goddess given Mate and creating a life away from tyrannical Alphas.
“As you suspected, Rune and Brynlee are here and it seems like they have mended their bond.” I continue, getting a dark chuckle from the man on the other line – a chuckle that sends shivers down my spine and fear rocketing through me.
“But there is more.” I add before the pain of the blood pact can affect me.
“Your sister, Asteria D'Artagnon, is the Alpha and Brynlee is her Beta.” A sudden sense of weightlessness fills me with these words and the shackles of the blood pact vanishes from within me. I take a deep breath, shocked and elated by this. I am free.
“I see.” Alpha Valor states.
“Come back here at once so that we can discuss our next steps of the plan.” He orders; his voice filled with the power of an Alpha command – a command that slides right off me. Grinning, I find myself laughing, unable to retort for a moment as the feeling of freedom fills me like a breath of fresh air.
“What’s so funny, Devlyn?” Alpha Valor asks, anger growing with each word he spits.
“The blood pact had been fulfilled. You no longer own me.” I state back with glee, still laughing like a mad man.
“You can go fuck yourself Valor as I am a Rogue, free to choose what I do now.”
“Devlyn you bas –” I hang up as Valor goes to curse me, my smile growing wider as my laughter begins to settle down. I am a free man now. A man who can leave Crescent Phoenix and find a life for myself.
