Amelia paced the living room that night, her mind racing as she replayed the day’s events. The image of Ryan with the twins gnawed at her, his charm and easy affection threatening the fragile stability she had worked so hard to create.
She considered drastic measures—packing up and leaving town, starting fresh somewhere far from Ryan’s influence. But the thought of uprooting the twins from their school and friends gave her pause.
Her best friend, Sammie, listened patiently as Amelia vented over the phone.
“I don’t know what to do,” Amelia admitted, her voice shaking. “I can’t let him confuse them like this, but I don’t want to destroy their sense of home either.”
“Maybe you need to set firmer boundaries,” Sammie suggested. “Make it clear to Ryan that he can’t just waltz in and out of their lives.”
Amelia nodded, though doubt lingered. Boundaries had never been Ryan’s strong suit.
The next day, her resolve was tested when Ryan showed up unannounced at her door.
“You need to stop this,” she said as soon as she opened the door, not giving him a chance to speak.
Ryan held up his hands defensively. “I’m not here to fight, Amelia. I just want to talk.”
“Talk about what?” she snapped. “How you’re undermining everything I’ve built for the twins? How you think you can just show up and play hero?”
“They’re my kids too,” Ryan said firmly, stepping closer. “You can’t erase me from their lives.”
Amelia’s eyes blazed with anger. “Erase you? You did that all on your own when you walked out on us!”
Ryan flinched but held his ground. “I made mistakes. But I’m trying to fix them now. You can’t punish me forever, Amelia. They deserve to know their father.”
Amelia folded her arms, her voice cold. “They deserve stability, Ryan. And until you prove you’re capable of providing that, I’m not letting you anywhere near them.”
Ryan stared at her for a long moment, his jaw tight. “This isn’t over,” he said quietly before turning and walking away.
