Destin POV
The door to my room shuts, and I look up to see Macy. She threatened to put me in the dungeons, but she has yet to make good on that threat. Instead, she put me in a bedroom in the Fae Palace and had it warded with magic. No matter how severe she tries to pretend to be, she can't follow through.
"Are you here to take me to the dungeons?"
My words fall on deaf ears. She is pacing the floor, wringing her hands together. This is new. I lean forward to get a better look at her. Is this all part of the show? Is someone getting ready to burst through that door to demand answers from me?
"We have a problem."
Her eyes are glittering with tears. She isn't putting on a show. I am on my feet in an instant. "What happened?"
She holds her hands against her stomach, trying to control her breathing. "Gracus came to me this morning. He demanded that I look for the twins."
"Shit," I groan. "What did you tell him?"
The tears drip down her cheeks. "The truth."
I grab her shoulders and shake her gently. "What is the truth?"
"I can't see into the Human Realm. Well, I can't see the children in the Human Realm, but I left that part out."
My arms fall lifelessly to my sides. This isn't part of the plan. The only reason I agreed to this ridiculous plan was because Macy assured me she could check on them. She would be able to tell me where to find them and if they were in trouble. I had no idea her powers didn't extend beyond the portal.
"I thought…"
"I thought too," she hisses. "I don't understand. I can see Raven and her mates. I can see the other triplet with her mate, and I could see Charlie up until a week ago. Now, I can't see him at all. It is like Wren, Charlie, and the twins have dropped off the face of the earth."
I begin to pace the floor with Macy, and our footsteps fall into rhythm. We bounce ideas off each other and try to make sense of what is going on. Then it hits me.
"It is the twins."
Macy looks at me like I am crazy, but I hold up my hand to stop her from speaking. "Look for Gracus."
She crosses her arms over her chest and huffs angrily, but she closes her eyes. "He is in his house, with his mate."
I curse under my breath. "Never mind."
She opens her eyes, and her brow wrinkles. She taps her manicured finger on her chin. "I think you might be right. The twins aren't Gray Creatures or Fae. They are something in between. Maybe I can't see them for the same reason I can't see Selene."
My mouth is gaping open. "What are you trying to say?"
"I think the twins are celestials."
"Celestials," I repeat her word. "As in gods. I think you are crazy. Onyx was not a goddess."
"I'm not crazy," she continues. "No one remembers Onyx being pregnant. What if the twins weren't hers at all? Gracus has a child who was born to his Fae mate. She doesn't look like the twins. What if Onyx was charged with keeping them safe?"
I press my fingers into my temples, my head is beginning to hurt. "Gracus is the only other person who knew about them."
As I say the words, I realize who has the truth about the twins. Macy's eyes begin to turn black, and the lights in the room flicker angrily. She balls her hands into fists, and I back away from her. "What do you think he knows?"
"Everything."
She opens her fists, and the lights in the room explode, sending glass everywhere. "He is threatening war against me if I don't return the twins. This is bigger than just wanting to close the portal."
"Macy," I say her name carefully. "You have to calm down. You can't attack him. If you do, the Gray Creatures will never side with you. You might be their Queen, but he is their leader. He is one of them."
She turns her icy glare on me. "So, I can't stab him in the neck."
I chuckle loudly. I had forgotten how spicy Macy can get when she is angry. "No. You can't stab him in the neck. Diplomacy."
"Fuck diplomacy," she snaps. "He has been hiding things from me."
I exhale. "Where is Winston? He will be calm, take him with you."
The door swings open, and Nyx shuffles in. She has Arabella's tome in her hands. "The twins aren't Fae."
"We know," Macy growls.
Nyx ignores her anger and thumps the tome on the floor. She opens it, carefully turning the pages. "Here. Two children will be born. A girl will be born of the moon, childbirth, and the hunt. Next, a boy will be born of the sun, music, and prophecy. They will be given to a mortal until they are old enough to take over where the Moon Goddess fails."
"Shit," I breath out. "This is bad."
Macy drops to the ground, staring at the book. "You must have read it wrong. The Moon Goddess cannot be replaced."
"That's not what I said," Nyx chastises her. "You never listen. I said, they will take over where the Moon Goddess fails. They won't replace her."
I snort with laughter. "Like that is going to make a difference to Selene. She will kill them when she finds them."
Nyx slams the tome shut, catching Macy's fingers in between the pages. "She can't find them. No one will be able to."
Macy reaches for my hand, and I rip it away. "What do you mean?"
Nyx gets back to her feet. "They are protected by a magic that I can't begin to understand. The older they get, the more their magic will shield them from those who would wish to hunt them down. Even those who wish to do it for good."
I run my hands down my face. "I can't stay here. Macy, you have to let me go."
She steps away from me. "I can't. Not until we speak with Gracus."
A snarl rips from my throat. "Then fucking speak to him. I can't wait for you to twiddle your fucking fingers. I have to find them before I lose them forever."
