Destin POV
I am standing in front of the Fae Palace with my arms crossed over my chest. Wren couldn't keep her mouth shut about the presence of Nyx in my mind, and now Macy is demanding that I shift. Wren has an apologetic look on her face, Macy has tears running down her cheeks, but Charlie, that motherfucker, looks amused.
"I don't need to shift," I shout louder than I need to. "Nyx doesn't want to."
Nyx gasps loudly in my mind. 'Liar.'
Macy wrings her hands together nervously. "Please, Destin. I just want to see if she is the same color. I don't think anything like this has ever happened before."
Nyx is stomping around in my head. She isn't happy about this situation either. She assumed that when she sacrificed her life force for me, she would have entered eternal sleep, but it appears the universe has a sense of humor.
"Stop stomping around like that," I snap at her, and Charlie bursts out laughing.
Not only am I struggling with having my oldest friend in my mind, but I am also struggling with knowing how to converse with her in my thoughts. While I can communicate with others silently without issue, my brain struggles to communicate with Nyx.
A growl rumbles in my chest, and Charlie clamps his mouth shut, but his eyes still glitter with amusement.
'Don't pay attention to them,' Nyx sighs. 'They are being assholes.'
"They are being assholes," I shout purposely.
Charlie scoffs loudly. "I heard that."
"You were meant to, asshole."
Wren steps between us, like she has been doing for the past few days. For some reason, having Nyx in my mind is making me volatile, and I want to rip into Charlie every moment of every day. If I had to guess, Wren is getting tired of playing goalie, and I am getting tired of Nyx's mood swings.
'Why are you so fucking angry?' I manage to snap at her silently.
She forces herself to the surface and glares at Charlie. 'He is just so frustrating– and attractive.'
'Nope. Nope.' I grunt at her. 'I had considered letting you out, but not now. Not ever.'
She huffs loudly. 'It isn't like he would share my affections.'
I place my hands over my ears and try to block everyone out. It is all becoming too much, and I feel like I am going insane. Before I come entirely undone, someone lays a hand on my shoulder. I open a single eye and see Macy smiling at me.
"I am sorry. I shouldn't have pushed you. I know how difficult Nyx can be."
I shrug off her touch. "Thanks."
She cocks her head to the side and stares into my eyes. "Do you want me to teach you how to block her out?"
A growl echoes through the air, and I see Wren with her teeth bared. Even after all this time, my little kitten is threatened by Macy, when Macy can't hold a candle to her. Not then, not now, and certainly not ever.
"It's okay," I tell Macy. "I am sure Wren and Charlie can teach me what I need to know."
Disappointment is written all over her face, but she doesn't speak it out loud. "If you ever decide to let her run, I would love to see her again."
My eyes flicker to Charlie, and Nyx sighs in my head. "I don't think that will be happening any time soon."
Wren laces her fingers in mine and tugs me away from Macy. She is walking so quickly that I struggle to keep up with her pace. I let her drag me out of the sight of the others before I pull her to a stop.
"What has gotten into you?"
She bats her long eyelashes at me and pretends to be innocent. "Nothing."
I place my hands in my pockets where she can't reach them. "I don't believe you."
She stomps her foot onto the ground and pushes her bottom lip out into a pout. "I don't like you sharing things with Macy."
I don't have to pretend to be confused, because I actually am. "What are you talking about?"
"Nyx," she snarls. "You and Macy have both had her in your mind, and that creates a bond between you."
I bite down on my tongue to keep from laughing. "It creates nothing of the sort. Plus. It is not Macy you have to worry about."
"What are you talking about?"
Her pretty blue eyes narrow at me, and I worry that what I am about to say is going to piss her off, so I choose not to tell her about Nyx's infatuation with Charlie.
"It is nothing, Kitten. Let's go home."
I try to pull her in the direction of our cabin, but she digs her heels into the dirt. "I am not leaving this spot until you tell me."
I open my mouth and attempt to lie to her, but even though I have a wolf living in my mind, I still have the inability to create a falsehood. I am more Fae than werewolf. My mouth snaps shut, and I shake my head back and forth.
She keeps her pretty eyes glued to mine and doesn't budge. The longer we stand looking at one another, the angrier she gets, and the more turned on I get. She is perfect, and I do not deserve her beauty or kindness, but right now, I want to pull her to me and fuck her attitude away.
"If you are going to reject me, just do it," she whispers.
"What?"
Wren looks away from me, not wanting to show me the tears in her eyes. "You might be my mate, but what if Nyx has another?"
"Ah," I scratch the back of my neck awkwardly. "About that. I think she is in love with Charlie."
"Who is in love with me?" Charlie asks as he pushes several branches out of his way.
Wren can't stifle the giggle in her throat. "Nyx."
Charlie steps away from me like I have the plague, and I throw my hands into the air. "Fucking perfect."
"Wait," Wren calls after me. "I'm not mad. It is actually the best-case scenario. At least it isn't a stranger."
I keep marching through the trees toward my cabin. I can hear Wren stumbling after me, and I can only assume Charlie is coming too.
"The best-case scenario for who?" He shouts out. "I don't want to be fucked by Destin."
Wren's cackling laughter fills my ears, and I lose my temper.
I spin around, and a growl rips from my lips. "Would you two stop making a joke out of everything? I am tired, stressed, and in foreign territory. Neither of you are helping."
Charlie stops in his tracks, and so does Wren. Neither are brave enough to look me in the eyes. When I realize I won't be getting the apology I deserve, I continue home. Only this time, I don't hear the sound of them following me. I grunt at their lack of emotion, but I don't turn back to them. I expect they will be home once they feel guilty enough.
What I am not expecting is for the Luna Queen to be waiting for me outside my cabin. "Queen Raven, your daughter is not here."
She smiles softly. "I am not here for my daughter. I am here for you."
