Kieran POV
Mae falls forward, and I catch her before she hits the ground. The wound on her arm is oozing and is hot to the touch. While a werewolf is immune to an attack from a rogue, it can be deadly for a human. The wounds that rogues inflict can become infected very quickly.
I turn to a medic that is nearby. "Why wasn't the Luna attended to?"
The medic refuses to look into my eyes. "She was helping us with the wounded. We didn't know she needed help."
"Look at her," I scream at the medic.
The medic tries to take her from me, but I hold her close to my chest. "Don't touch her," I growl.
He takes a step away from me and gestures for me to follow him. Scooping Mae into my arms, I carry her toward the ambulance. Reluctantly, I let the medic take her from me and lay her in the back of the ambulance.
"Are you coming?" The medic asks.
"I will follow behind you," I tell him.
The medic closes the back doors of the ambulance, and it drives off. I am trying to control my anger over my mate being injured before I head to the hospital.
I feel Raven's presence beside me, but I don't turn to her.
"You should be proud of your mate," she says. "She saved that little girl's life by taking on two rogues on her own. Then, she attended to every pack member who needed help. She acted the way a Luna should."
"And she got injured!" I scream at Raven. "She could lose her arm."
"Would you be this angry if she were a werewolf?" Raven challenges me.
"Of course not," I snap at Raven. "She is a human. She is weak."
Raven shakes her head at me in disappointment. "You are underestimating her. She is strong and capable. You can't protect her from our world forever. You have to trust that the Moon Goddess paired you with her for a reason."
"She is a human," I scream at Raven again.
"You are a fool," Raven hisses at me before she walks away.
I am seething with anger as she walks away. How dare she tell me that I am coddling my mate? She is a human for fuck's sake. How can she live safely in our world?
My Beta, Wesley, comes to my side. He doesn't speak. I am assuming he can feel my anger radiating off of me in waves.
"What do you want?" I snap at him.
"Umm," he studders. "I just wanted to let you know that cleanup is underway."
"What about the wounded?" I growl.
"The Luna made sure everyone was attended too," Wesley says quietly. "She was the last to be taken to the hospital."
"What do you mean she made sure everyone was attended to?" I snap.
Wesley steps away from me. "She headed up the medic team. Before she showed up, they were running around unorganized. She pulled them together and made sure those that were the most injured were taken care of first."
I grunt in Wesley's direction, and he leaves. Raven said that Mae helped the injured, but she failed to mention that Mae took charge of the whole operation. But I would expect nothing less from a nurse. Maybe Raven was right, and I underestimated Mae.
Looking behind me, it appears that Wesley and my fathers have the cleanup handled. So, I head for the parking lot.
Once I am in my car, I turn my music up loud. I want to drown out all of my thoughts and the voice of my wolf. But that doesn't mean that Karr isn't protesting loudly in my mind. He is attempting to be louder than the music playing in my car.
Turning the dial on my radio, I make the music louder. Karr scratches at the corners of my mind, trying to get my attention. He is screaming about Mae being capable. But I push him to the back of my mind angrily. I don't need to be lectured by him as well.
I pull into the parking lot of the hospital and stop my car right in front of the emergency room. I know I am blocking traffic, but the only thing I can think about is getting to Mae's side.
The double doors open as I step through and the waiting room is in chaos. Family members are looking for their loved ones, and the nurse's station is overrun. They are severely understaffed due to the Ball in the Queen's honor. We never expected an attack with the Queen on our lands. The rogues are getting bold.
Suddenly, the most beautiful voice rings out over the crowd. "If you all could please form a line. We will get to you as soon as we can. But rest assured that your loved ones are being cared for."
My mouth drops open as I look at Mae standing at the nurse's station with a clipboard in her hand. Her arm has been bandaged and she is in a fresh pair of scrubs. Blood is seeping through her bandaging, but she is not letting it slow her down.
The crowd obediently forms a line in front of the nurse's station. I step forward, bypassing the crowd. I know I have a scowl on my face. I am angry. Mae should be resting, not running the emergency room of the hospital.
Mae looks up from the clipboard. She looks tired. Her lips are pale, and sweat is beading on her brow. If I had to guess she is running a fever. "Kieran," she fakes a smile. "What are you doing here?"
"I was coming to sit with my mate while she heals," I snap at her. "But here you are, working."
"The hospital needs my help, and I am feeling much better," she says, glancing back down at her paperwork.
"You were attacked by a rogue," I say through gritted teeth. "You should be resting."
Mae looks past me to the woman who is standing behind me. "Who are you here for?" She asks the woman.
The woman steps forward, and her head is bowed. She doesn't dare to look Mae in the eyes. "Luna," she whimpers.
"You can call me Mae," Mae says gently to the woman. "Now, how can I help you."
The woman glances at me out of the corner of her eyes before she speaks to Mae. "I am looking for my husband. His name is Kristof Riley."
Mae flips through the paperwork in front of her. "He is in room 202."
"Thank you, Luna," the woman says with tears in her eyes.
The woman steps to the side and runs down the hall to the elevators.
"If you are going to insist on being here," Mae snaps at me. "Then you can either take a seat or help."
I grumble angrily under my breath and take my side beside Mae behind the counter. If she is going to insist on being here all night, so am I.
