Chapter 30:AT THE DOCTOR

Ch. 30 / 61 Sep 17, 2024

"Skylar Evans. Are you going to spend all day in bed?"

Skylar grunted as she rolled over to the other side, trying to get herself comfortable on the bed as she listened to the distant voice in her dreams, which sounded just like her mom.

"Skylar." The door to her room burst open suddenly, causing Skylar to shoot up in shock as she turned to stare at her mother, rubbing furiously at her eyes, trying to rid the remaining sleep in them.

"Jesus, Skylar. Just how many drinks did you have last night?" Mrs. Evans replied, already rushing to her daughter's side as she placed her hands on her forehead, trying to gauge her temperature.

"Thank goodness. You seem to be alright. Freshen up, let me go get you some pills and warm water which will help with the hangover," Mrs. Evans replied, already going out of the room already going in search of the pills, which she wasn't sure she had in the house.

Skylar watched her mother retreating back carefully before getting off the bed to the bathroom to shower. She couldn't help thinking about last night and wondering what to do after she had watched Vino choose his daughter over her again last night.

She was left at a crossroads and didn't know what to do? She can't possibly accept him back. What about his baby? That she can handle, but Elise was a different case entirely. Skylar had always known she was obsessed with Vino. She can't compete over Vino with a psychopath bitch

Skylar stepped out of the shower after heaving a loud sigh. Still have not found any answers to her inner turmoil, she came to her room rubbing the towel on her hairs trying to drain the water out of them. Her eyes got the pills and water her mom had placed on her bed stand. She took them and swallowed them before going over to her wardrobe to find something to put on.

"I'm saying the fact, mom, I can't accept him back. Even though he isn't in love with Elise, she's the mother of his daughter. I can't separate a daughter from her father," Skylar replied, shaking her head at her mother, who sat in the dining room watching her daughter curiously.

"And why wouldn't you? Is this about his daughter?" Mrs. Evans asked her daughter as she couldn't understand why Skylar kept pushing Vino away, even though everyone could clearly see that he was in love with her.

"No mom, this isn't about Adora," Skylar replied as she reached out to take a pea from the plate in front of her, but the smell got her dropping it back in seconds. She couldn't understand why she was suddenly hating the smell of peas, as it was her favourite.

"Oh, she has a name. Adora. Such a beautiful name," Mrs. Evans replied with a teasing smile on her face as she chewed her food excitedly, pretending not to know what was wrong with her daughter.

Skylar rolled her eyes at her mother before explaining, ignoring her mother's outburst, "Adora isn't the issue here, Mom. I'm more scared of Elise. Who knows what she will do to me? Mom, she's obsessed with Vino"

"Really? But I thought you said she was rich," Mrs. Evans replied, suddenly understanding her daughter's predicament. She couldn't help blaming herself for not raising her daughter well. If only she was lucky in love, her daughter would have grown up knowing exactly what love is, but what to do?

"I don't know what to do anymore. I'm confused. And Gian, he asked me out last night. I'm so confused, Mom. I only use him to make Vino jealous, I never knew he would take it seriously, and____" Skylar rose suddenly as she felt the bile rising in her throat, she felt the need to vomit which send her running up the stairs to her room in seconds leaving Mrs. Evans bewildered staring at her daughters retreating back.

"Are you alright, Skylar? What's wrong with you?" Mrs. Evans exclaimed as she watched her daughter run up the stairs in shock.

Skylar came back into the room later, rubbing her mouth gently as she suddenly felt sick and tired. "Are you alright?" Her mother questioned her with half-closed eyes, trying to seem disinterested.

"Yes. I'm just hungover from last night's party. I guess I had so much to drink that I lost count of," Skylar replied as she laughed nervously, her mother raising her eyebrow at her slightly before turning to pack the dishes.

Skylar couldn't help reading the meaning behind her mother's weird look. Is this something she should be concerned about? Come to think of it, this wasn't the first time she was experiencing this__ the first time she had waved it off as being behind the weather but now___

Could she be pregnant? No, she couldn't. Skylar shakes her head frantically, trying to rid herself of such a thought.

Is there any possibility of that? Skylar asked herself as it immediately threw her into the reality of trying to count her finger to see when her last menstruation was...

Oh My God! Three months ago, and I never noticed. Skylar screamed in her head as she ran up the stairs to her room, in a daze still shocked about what she had uncovered but wasn't convinced. Picking up her keys, she races down the stairs with urgency in her stride.

"Mom, I'm going out," Skylar called to her mom, racing past the kitchen where her mother was busy with the dishes already going to the door.

"Okay, Darling. Be careful with your driving. It's not good for your health," Mrs. Evans replied with a smile on her face. She knew what her daughter was about to uncover and was happy that it happened. Though she prays to God, to give her daughter strength to endure it.

Skylar got into the car and put the key in the ignition. Turning it on, she turned to pull the car out of the parking space when her phone rang. Looking at the caller's ID, she rushed to pick it up after fixing her Bluetooth to her ear.

"You seem to run away from every party. Where have you been, Skylar?" Paula's voice greeted her as soon as she accepted the call.

"I'm sorry. I was a bit caught up yesterday that I forgot about you. How are you?" Skylar asked her. She was feeling guilty that she had forgotten to call Paula. She had wanted to do that this morning, but chatting with her mom had made her forget about everything else.

"I'm good. Are you okay? What's wrong with you?" Paula asked her as soon as she noticed the stress in Skylar's voice. She hoped it wasn't last night's party that had taken a toll on her. Though they had left early, she wasn't able to keep track of Skylar's progress with Gian. Did she succeed in making Vino jealous?

"I'm not good. I'm on my way to the hospital now," Skylar replied as she forced back tears from her eyes. Hearing Paula's voice had finally caused the magnitude of what she had done to descend on her.

"Why? Are you sick?" Paula asked as her voice took on a worried edge, seeing that she was concerned for Skylar. She had taken her as a sister and would do anything to make her happy.

"No, but___ I think_____ I might be pregnant," Skylar finally replied as she maneuvers the car away from the lane which seems to be at a standstill with the traffic.

"Pregnant? Oh my God? Where's the hospital? Give me the address. I'll meet you there," Paula called into the phone. Skylar could hear shuffling in the background like she was changing out of her clothes.

Skylar hangs up after giving the name and address of the hospital to Paula before trying to rest her head on the dashboard after pulling into the hospital's parking lot.

"Come on, stop brooding. This isn't a death sentence," Skylar heard Paula tell her, trying to comfort her, but she wasn't listening as her eyes were fixed on the white sheet of papers in her hands. It was her result that read positive.

Skylar glared at Paula, getting angry with her even though she knew Paula was only trying to comfort her, but she couldn't understand the magnitude of what she had done to herself. How can she get pregnant with Vino, who already has a fiancée? Oh, my Skylar, of all men on the surface of the earth, why does it have to be Vino Thompson?

"Come on, girl. I'm sure Vino will be happy. Girl, he loves you so much," Paula told her with a smile on her face. She saw nothing bad about getting pregnant as long as Vino would take responsibility. There's nothing bad about that!

"I'm pregnant," Skylar repeated, the thousandth time still trying to wrap her brain around that word. The doctor had said she was three months pregnant, just as she had suspected, but she didn't know what to do. Should she be happy that her fling with Vino had borne fruit? Or should she be sad that her baby will grow up just like her without knowing her father?

"Skylar"

Skylar forces herself from her thoughts as she turned to see Paula looking up at her with concern on her face

"Come on, don't be like this. I have a plan," Paula told her, trying to get her to be happy. Ever since coming out of the doctor's office, Skylar had been crying and Paula had been tempted to call Vino many times, but she had controlled herself knowing that Skylar wouldn't be happy when she found out.

Skylar looked up at Paula with hope in her eyes. She wondered what Paula's plan was. "What is it? Hope it isn't abortion? Cause I'm not interested"

"No, of course not," Paula told her with a smile on her face. "I could invite Vino home, then you'll be able to tell him yourself or I can have my husband tell him. You know they are close and he listens to him"

Skylar shakes her head, showing Paula that she wasn't agreeing with her plan as she walks to her car. "Don't worry, I'm going to be alright," Skylar replied, forcing a smile onto her face, but she wasn't convinced. Was she saying that to convince herself or Paula?

"Are you sure?" Paula asked her again before she could leave her as they were now standing side by side at the parking lot in each of their cars.

Skylar nodded as she went to wipe her eyes, which was causing tears to stream down her face. Tear, Skylar didn't know she was shedding until Paula pointed it to her.

"Do you want me to drive you home? I could call my driver to come pick up my car later?" Paula volunteered, as she was feeling guilty for leaving Skylar all by herself, especially in her state of mental breakdown.

"Yes. I'm fine. Thanks for being there with me. I couldn't have done without you," Skylar replied as she got into her car and pulled out of the parking lot after waving to Paula.

She took the route to her apartment because she couldn't stand facing her mother right now? What will her mother say? And Vino, will he be happy? Should she tell him? Will he think she intentionally got pregnant for him to trap him?

Oh, God! Skylar screamed in frustration as she hit the steering wheel in anger as tears spilled down her face. She was at a crossroads, with no solution. What can she do? She doesn't even know if Vino was still in love with her?

As Skylar drives home, her mind is in turmoil again as she searches around for answers. She pulled the car into her apartment. With a quick wave to the security guard, she took the elevator to her room.
