I’ve ignored Soren’s calls for the past hour, so it doesn’t surprise me when I hear his truck speeding down the road about a mile away.
“He’s almost here,” Dany informs me. “I can hear his truck.”
I stand by the window. “I know.”
Dany comes up behind me. “You need to tell Stark. He talks to the Royal pack, and they have connections. Maybe we can talk to Bailey. I know she was just a child when we separated, but she was like our sister, both her and Faith. Bailey’s been personally touched by the Great Luna, so she might have some insight on what’s going on.”
She has a point. Bailey is the one who brought magic back to our people. “Okay,” I admit. “I’ll tell Stark and have him give me Bailey’s number. If I knew I could get away with it, I’d make a quick trip to Wyoming to see her in person.”
Dany snorts. “You won’t be able to get out of South Dakota without Soren tracking you down.”
Soren pulls into the driveway, and I can already see the worry on his face before he even gets out. He charges toward the door and knocks so hard it rattles the floor. I’m not ready to tell him about Micah, so I concocted a plan. Will it work? I have no idea. The goal is to stay away from Soren and Micah until I figure out what to do. How am I going to implement this plan with two hard-headed alphas? It’s a good question and one I don’t have the answer to. I’m just hoping I can get a little more time.
Taking a deep breath, I plaster on a smile and open the door.
Soren’s body hums with anger and concern. “Why didn’t you answer my calls? I felt your distress, and it had me worried.”
I step back and wave him in. “I’m sorry. I, uh …” I glance over my shoulder at Dany, who’s on the couch. Soren steps inside, and I fumble with what I’m going to say. “We, uh. We decided to watch a scary movie, and it had me all kinds of crazy.”
Soren peers over at Dany, and she nods. “Rae’s a big baby when it comes to horror.”
On the contrary, I love a good slasher film, but I needed something to take credit for my fear.
Soren narrows his gaze at me and huffs, “All right, I’ll let you get back to it. I’m sorry for being overprotective.”
It warms my heart to know he cares, but all it does is make me feel worse.
His deep blue eyes bore into mine. “Do you not have to work on any cases today?”
I shake my head. “Sadly, there isn’t anything scandalous going on in Silver Springs at the moment.” Well, except for my own debacle.
Almost ninety percent of my cases are people trying to find out if their spouses are cheating. Our caseload has also diminished a bit since we decided to stay with the Black Hills pack. We used to take on cases all over the United States until my bond with Soren appeared. He wants to ensure I’m fully protected before we complete the bond. Hence, the reason why he wants me to stay close. I had one case in Michigan where a family wanted to find their missing son. The police weren’t getting anywhere, and it was heartbreaking. Stark, Dany, and I went on the search and ended up finding his body in a river just five miles from his house. He’d overdosed on drugs and drowned. I dreaded having to tell his parents.
Soren takes my hands, and I can feel the spark of our bond. It’s not as strong as when Micah touched me, but it’s still there.
“We’re all going out to the bar tonight. I figured you’d want to come and see your old friend before he leaves.”
My heart rate spikes. “Leaves? Micah’s leaving already?”
Soren nods. “That’s what I understood when I talked to Stark this morning. He said that Micah would be leaving now that he knows you all are safe. The whole purpose of his mission was to find you guys.”
Forcing a smile, I bob my head in agreement. “True. I’ll be there tonight.”
Soren steps closer and kisses me. “Great. I’ll pick you up.”
Once he’s gone, and out of earshot, I shut the door and lean against it.
Dany clears her throat, drawing my attention to her. “Are you really going to go to the bar?”
I give her a quick jerk of my head. “Not a chance in hell. I can’t be in the same room as Soren and Micah.”
Dany stares curiously over at me. “Then how are you going to get out of it?”
Groaning, I knock my head against the door. “You and Stark. You’re my only option.”
