Payment To the Alpha

Chapter 31

Ch. 31 / 102 Feb 14, 2026

I looked around and realized everyone was looking at me, including Lydia. I hadn't noticed her removing her head.

"Are you okay?" I looked at Alex's worried face and nodded.

I looked to my side and saw James with a confused look on his face. He scanned my eyes as if searching for something.

" Avery..." I looked back at Alex who looked just as confused as his brother.

" Your eyes, they were white. Like completely white."

My eyes widened at the comment. Was this connected to the voice in my head? It was a woman's voice, that's all I was certain of. It did sound awfully familiar.

"I...I don't know." What the hell do I say? Damn, I'm really cursing a lot after coming here.

Okey enough of this.

I shook my head and closed my eyes. Taking a few deep breaths before looking at Lydia who had her hands on my arms and looking at me with worry.

I cupped her face with my hands.

" You are my best friend. The only friend I have ever had. I understand why you couldn't tell me the truth back then. I understand that things were complicated, I guess. But no more. You have to promise me that you will never lie to me again. I forgive you, Lydia, of course I do. I mean your damn leg was sticking out because you wanted to be here for me. And I'm sorry for what my dad did to you. I love you so much." My words spoken softly and with love. I embraced her in another hug before slowly letting go. Lydia went to sit beside Natasha again, who was smiling at her daughter and me.

" I promise." I smiled and nodded at her response.

" Well, if that was all-"

"No. I still have questions."

James was going to end our little "meeting" but I was nowhere near done.

"I appreciate that you all are telling me the truth and all. But I need answers to what is happening right now." I looked over at James

" Why do I have to marry you?"

It felt good getting that question lifted off my heart. I was eighteen, I couldn't get married. Correction, I didn't want to get married. Especially not to a man I barely knew.

They all looked around at each other, nobody wanted to answer, I could tell.

Finally, after a few quiet minutes, James started speaking.

"Do you remember how your mother told you about the spell that was put on you before you were born?"

" I- How did you know she said that?"

He pointed to his ears

"Werewolf remember? Like Lydia said, we have a much faster healing ability, along with immaculate hearing and sight."

Um yeah ... right. How was I supposed to take this? Some sort of adaption manual upon entering this place would have been nice.

I sat there quietly waiting for James to continue.

"So when your parents had the witch put the spell on you, they wanted to make sure that we couldn't back out. So at your mother's wishes the witch made a binding soul contract along with a lock spell, signed in blood. If we don't get married by the time you turn nineteen..."

~James POV~

I couldn't. I couldn't say it. I couldn't tell Avery the consequents that would happen if we did not get married.

She would do it just to save me. I knew that. There was however another way. I would use the love she had for her family if I had to.

'Don't be a jackass'

I will do what I need to

' You don't need to be a jackass. She's our mate, human or not. And trust me you do not want to get on her bad side'

If I have to play the douche to make her believe she needs to do this and stays oblivious to the soul contract, then I will. I still haven't made up my mind regarding my feelings for her

' It is not something for you to make up your mind about, she's our mate. Period' Blade growled back.

Recently my wolf, Blade, has been relentlessly badgering me about Avery. I guess I understood. She was our mate, but she didn't have a wolf. How could he be so smitten?

I snubbed him in the back of my head and focused back on the conversation at hand.

"What will happen?"

Avery looked up at me with those big brown eyes. Batting her lashes. Her bottom lip trembled from crying.

Damn you bloody dog... I liked her. I didn't want to hurt her. But drastic times call for drastic measures.

" I don't know what will happen. But we must get married, it was part of the contract and breaking a contract with a witch always ends badly." I spoke softly and took her hand in to mine.

" Who was the witch?"

Her question made me stiffen, along with everyone else present. I saw the fear in Natashas eyes in my peripheral vision.

Why did she care if Avery knew or not?

I threw her a quick glance and Natasha shook her head hoping I wouldn't tell.

" We don't know. I was just a child when it all happened and my parents never told me."

'Lies'

Do I have to block you out?

Thank you
