My Husband Chose Her Over Me

CHAPTER 120 — The King Is Back

Ch. 120 / 213 Mar 25, 2026

VIVIAN’s POV

The morning of the grand day begins with a kind of silence that feels too deliberate, like the air itself knows what’s coming.

I stand near the east wing balcony, the city of Verloren stretching before me in shades of pale gold and smoke. From here, everything looks calm—streets opening, servants rushing, the hum of palace life starting again—but underneath, I can almost feel it: the tremor before a storm.

When Captain Solomon enters my chambers, I’m ready.

He closes the door quietly behind him. “You wanted to see me?”

“Yes,” I say, keeping my voice low. “It’s time.”

Solomon frowns. “Time for what, Vivian?”

“For you to bring King Darius back to the palace. Today—by afternoon.”

His expression twists between disbelief and alarm. “You’ve lost your mind.”

“Perhaps,” I admit. “But we can’t wait any longer. Arinelle’s hold weakens every hour. If Darius doesn’t return now, when the nobles are already doubting her, we’ll lose the momentum forever.”

He crosses his arms. “You think waltzing a dethroned king into the palace is simple? Half the guards still swear loyalty to her.”

“They swear to whoever stands taller that day,” I reply sharply. “By tonight, it will be Darius.”

He hesitates, searching my face. “You’re sure about this?”

I meet his gaze without blinking. “Completely.”

After a long silence, he exhales. “You sound just like him, you know. Reckless enough to be right.”

“Then trust me.”

He nods, reluctant but resigned. “I’ll send word to the ruins. If this fails—”

“It won’t,” I interrupt. “By the time he walks through the doors, Arinelle’s power will already be dust.”

Solomon leaves, his steps fading down the corridor. I press my hands together to keep them from trembling.

The clock begins to count.

***

The first half of the day unfolds like a scene I’ve played too many times before. I lace Arinelle’s gowns, adjust her jewels, manage her moods. Every smile, every bow, every word feels rehearsed, hollow.

Inside, I wait for the explosion.

Arinelle lounges in front of her mirror as I sort through two boxes of jewelry, her reflection watching me with lazy amusement. “How long has it been, Vivian?” she asks suddenly. “Since you came to my service.”

“Longer than I can remember, Your Majesty,” I answer.

She hums, tapping a finger against her chin. “That long. You’ve grown from a quiet little maid to something quite sharp. I’ve always admired that.”

“I only do what must be done, my Queen.”

She smiles, slow and self-satisfied. “Of course you do.”

She picks up a string of emeralds, letting them glint in the light. “Do you know, when I was a girl, I used to dream of this. Sitting right here, with the kingdom beneath my feet. My tutors would say Verloren was too vast for one woman to rule. I never agreed.”

I fold a gown carefully, forcing my voice to stay even. “It seems you proved them wrong.”

“Not yet,” she says, eyes glimmering in the mirror. “Not until Darius’s name is erased from every record. Then I will finally be what this realm deserves.”

The sheer arrogance of her tone nearly breaks my composure. Deserves.

She wants to swallow the kingdom whole and call it destiny.

Still, I bow my head slightly. “You will always have the people’s admiration, my Queen.”

She laughs—a brittle, elegant sound. “Oh, Vivian. Admiration is nothing. Power is everything.”

The words crawl down my spine like frost.

But I keep my face calm and continue sorting her jewels. She doesn’t notice that my hands are shaking.

***

By evening, the storm finally comes.

The palace trembles with footsteps, the air thick with raised voices. I’m arranging the Queen’s jewelry box when Arinelle bursts from her chambers, her silk gown whipping behind her like a flame.

Her face is twisted in fury. “Solomon!” she screams.

The captain appears in the hallway within seconds, his expression unreadable.

“What is it, Your Majesty?”

Arinelle’s voice rises with every word. “Half the council refuses to take my call! Rueld—that snake—withdraws his allegiance after everything I promised him! Forty percent of his soldiers gone overnight! My supporters collapsing one by one!”

Solomon bows slightly. “Perhaps there’s been a misunderstanding—”

“Don’t patronize me!” she snarls. “Someone’s orchestrating this—someone wants to see me fall!”

Her fury shakes the walls. Servants appear from doorways, watching in fear. I stand near the corridor’s edge, hands clasped, heart pounding.

She spins on Solomon again. “Where is the King? Where is Darius hiding, that coward?”

A voice answers before Solomon can.

“Here.”

The hallway stills. Every whisper dies.

Darius stands at the far end of the corridor, a dark cloak draped over royal blue, his crownless brow high and steady. His presence fills the air like thunder—calm, sure, unstoppable.

Gasps ripple through the crowd. Arinelle stumbles back, eyes widening. “You—”

“I see you’re surprised, my dear wife,” Darius says quietly. “Rumor said I was ill. Dead, even.”

“You are supposed to be,” she hisses.

“Yet here I am.” He steps closer, his tone sharpening. “Alive, well, and watching the kingdom you tried to devour.”

Servants gather at the sides, whispering prayers, disbelief etched into every face.

Arinelle’s voice rises to a shriek. “You disappeared, you abandoned your throne!”

“I hid because the poison came from within my own house,” Darius answers coldly. “I see now that it was my wife’s ambition that sickened my crown.”

“Lies!” she snaps. “You call yourself a King, but I built this realm in your absence! I kept it from falling apart while you hid like a frightened boy!”

“And yet you filled my throne with treachery,” he says, stepping closer until they stand face-to-face. “Tell me, Arinelle—did you ever love anything but power?”

Her lips tremble—not with guilt, but rage.

“You’ll regret this,” she hisses.

Darius shakes his head slowly. “No, Arinelle. You already have.”

Something inside her snaps.

With a cry, she pulls a dagger from her sleeve and lunges.

The moment feels slower than time. Gasps ring out. I move, but someone moves faster.

A flash of steel—a clang of metal. Dani steps from the crowd, his sword raised, blocking the strike with a single, perfect motion. The blade catches the dagger midair, sending it clattering to the marble floor.

For a heartbeat, the two lock eyes—Arinelle trembling, Dani silent.

Then Solomon surges forward, grabbing her wrist before she can reach for another weapon. She screams, thrashing, fury spilling from her like venom.

“Release me!” she shrieks. “I am your Queen!”

Darius’s voice cuts through it all. “Not anymore.”

He nods once to Solomon. “Take her.”

Solomon hesitates just a fraction, then drags her backward, her cries echoing through the hall. Guards rush to help, their faces pale.

As she’s pulled away, Arinelle’s eyes find me. For a second, they’re wild, furious—then almost… knowing.

“You,” she spits, voice breaking. “You did this.”

Her scream fades as she disappears down the stairwell toward the dungeons. Silence crashes down, heavier than any sound before it.

Darius turns to face the stunned servants. “Your Queen no longer wears the crown,” he declares. “Your King has returned. Verloren stands again under its rightful ruler.”

Cheers don’t come immediately—only stunned murmurs. The people bow slowly, disbelief softening into relief.

When his gaze finds me, I bow, unable to hide the tremor in my knees.

Dani catches my eye from across the hall, his sword still gleaming, his chest rising with the weight of what just happened. He looks at me as if to say, It’s done.

But deep down, I know this isn’t the end. It’s only the beginning of another storm.

Still, for one fragile heartbeat, the kingdom holds its breath as Verloren takes back its King.
