My Husband Chose Her Over Me

CHAPTER 144

Ch. 144 / 213 Mar 25, 2026

Caden’s POV

The door opened before either of them noticed.

I stepped inside and felt the tension hit me like a physical force, thick and suffocating, vibrating through the stone walls. My mother stood rigid near the table, her posture immaculate, her eyes blazing with restrained fury. Elara faced her, shoulders squared but trembling, her breathing shallow, her hands clenched as if holding herself together by force alone.

The air smelled sharp, like something had already burned.

“What is going on,” I demanded.

Both of them turned at once.

Elara looked like she had been caught in a storm without shelter, eyes bright with unshed tears, defiance still clinging to her spine out of sheer refusal to collapse. My mother’s expression shifted instantly, rage snapping into controlled composure.

“Your bride was being educated,” Arinelle said smoothly.

“I didn’t ask,” I snapped. “I asked what is going on.”

Elara opened her mouth, then closed it again.

My mother’s gaze flicked to her dismissively. “She struck guards. She screamed. She embarrassed us before the court.”

“She was grabbed,” I shot back. “Unprovoked.”

Arinelle’s eyes narrowed. “You weren’t there.”

“I don’t need to be,” I replied. “I know how you operate.”

Silence dropped heavy and dangerous.

Elara took a step back, as if realizing she no longer had a place in this confrontation. I saw her then not as a problem, not as an inconvenience, but as a witness. And something in that unsettled me more than I expected.

“You forget yourself,” my mother said quietly. “You speak to me like an equal.”

“I speak to you like someone who crossed a line,” I said. “You will not touch her family.”

That stopped her.

Elara’s head lifted sharply.

“What,” Arinelle said softly.

“You heard me,” I continued. “Her father. Her village. You will not punish them for your frustration.”

Arinelle laughed once, cold and sharp. “You care now.”

“I care about containment,” I said. “You escalate without thinking. That is weakness.”

Her face darkened. “Do not lecture me about weakness.”

“You taught me everything I know,” I snapped. “Including how cruelty destroys control.”

Elara flinched visibly.

I noticed. I hated that I noticed.

“You raised me to believe power is fear,” I continued, voice rising despite myself. “And now you’re shocked when I recognize reckless behavior.”

Arinelle stepped closer, fury crackling beneath her calm. “I made you strong.”

“You made me dangerous,” I said. “And you don’t get to decide who I turn that on.”

Her jaw tightened. “This girl is a liability.”

“She is a complication,” I corrected. “And complications are handled quietly, not with public humiliation.”

“She humiliated herself,” Arinelle snapped.

“She defended herself,” I replied. “Against guards twice her size.”

“That makes her unfit,” my mother said. “Uncontrolled. Wild.”

Elara stiffened at the word.

I turned toward her before I could stop myself.

She looked at me with something raw in her expression, like she was bracing for the next blow. Watching. Learning. Measuring us both.

And in that moment, something shifted.

She wasn’t just trapped by this palace.

She was trapped between us.

“You see this,” Arinelle said sharply, following my gaze. “She watches like prey pretending to be calm.”

Elara’s breath hitched.

“Enough,” I snapped. “You will not dehumanize her.”

My mother stared at me in disbelief. “You defend her.”

“I defend boundaries,” I said. “And you crossed them.”

Arinelle’s voice dropped dangerously low. “You forget who shaped you.”

“I remember every word,” I said. “Kindness is weakness. Attachment is leverage. Love is a tool.”

Elara’s face drained of color.

I realized too late how much damage those words carried.

“You taught me that,” I continued, unable to stop. “And now you’re surprised I refuse to let you aim that weapon at innocent people.”

“Innocent,” Arinelle scoffed. “She climbed too high.”

“She was dragged,” I shot back.

Silence cracked between us.

Elara’s gaze darted between us, horror dawning slowly, painfully. She was seeing it now. Not just cruelty. Not just power. A bond rotted from the inside. Control disguised as care. Love twisted into dominance.

“You’re trapped,” she whispered, barely audible.

The words hit harder than any accusation.

Arinelle laughed sharply. “Do not pity us.”

“I don’t,” Elara said softly. “I fear you.”

Something dark flickered across my mother’s face.

“That is enough,” I said coldly. I turned fully toward Elara, forcing myself to harden, to put distance where instinct wanted hesitation.

“You don’t belong here,” I said.

Her jaw tightened.

“This palace will destroy you,” I continued. “And I will not marry you.”

The words fell heavy and deliberate, sharpened to wound.

She stared at me, pain flickering briefly before something else took its place. Resolve. Defiance. Something stubborn and unyielding.

For a moment, I thought she might cry.

Instead, she straightened.

“Then we both have a problem,” she whispered.

The room went very still.

And for the first time since my father spoke her name in the ballroom, I realized this was no longer about escaping fate.

It was about surviving each other.
