POV Audrey
The garden overlooking the sound transforms into something from a fairy tale, spring flowers framing the aisle in cascades of ivory and blush.
My grandfather offers his arm, and I take it with trembling fingers.
"You've given me more joy than you'll ever understand, Audrey." His voice carries decades of love compressed into a single moment. "Watching you become the woman standing beside me today—strong, brilliant, capable of a love that terrified you for so long—has been the greatest privilege of my life. I'm so incredibly proud of you."
"Grandfather, if you make me cry before I reach the altar, I will never forgive you." But my voice breaks on the words, and his answering chuckle vibrates through our linked arms.
"Then let's deliver you to your husband before we both embarrass ourselves completely."
The music swells, and we begin our walk.
Oliver sits in the front row, his gray eyes radiating joy so pure it nearly undoes me. He waves with enthusiastic abandon, ignoring every rule of wedding etiquette I attempted to teach him this morning.
Across the aisle, I catch Kara and Paul exchanging glances that carry weight I'll interrogate later.
Then I see Shane.
Tears stream openly down his face, his composure shattered completely. He stands at the altar crying like his heart might burst from happiness.
My grandfather stops before him, and the officiant's words fade to distant murmur as William speaks directly to Shane.
"I'm giving you my most precious treasure today, young man. My granddaughter, my legacy, my entire heart walking down this aisle in white. Promise me you'll protect her always, cherish her completely, and never forget how extraordinary she truly is."
"I promise you that and infinitely more, sir." Shane's voice breaks on the words. "I will spend my life being grateful for your interference."
"Well, don't delay the happy moment any further." Romy's voice carries from her seat, gentle humor softening the interruption. "We've all waited quite long enough for this wedding, William. Let them get married already."
Laughter ripples through the gathering as Grandfather places my hand in Shane's and steps aside.
Shane's fingers close around mine, warm and steady despite the tears still visible on his cheeks. He brings my hands to his lips, pressing a kiss against my knuckles before speaking.
"You are extraordinary, Audrey. Extraordinary and perfect and everything I never knew I needed until you crashed into my life with your chaos and your secrets and your absolute refusal to make anything simple. I love you beyond reason, beyond logic, beyond anything I thought myself capable of feeling. You've made me better in every way that matters."
"That's quite a declaration, Mr. Reed." I laugh through my own tears, squeezing his hands tightly. "Though I must say, you look rather handsome yourself standing here weeping like a romantic hero from a novel. I didn't know CEOs were capable of such dramatic displays of emotion."
"Only for you. Always and only for you."
We exchange vows that blur together in my memory, words about forever and partnership and building something beautiful from impossible beginnings. The rings slide onto fingers, cold metal warming against skin, and then the officiant pronounces us married.
Joy erupts through the gathering as Shane kisses me with passionate enthusiasm that makes several guests gasp and Oliver groan audibly about "gross adult stuff."
The celebration moves to a private restaurant overlooking the water.
I watch my grandfather guide Oliver across the dance floor, their bond deepening with every turn. My son chatters about marine conservation while William listens with genuine fascination.
Shane appears beside them, extending his hand to join their dance. Oliver takes it immediately, and suddenly three generations move together, weaving between other dancers with synchronicity that makes my heart ache with completeness.
"Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention please?" The DJ's voice cuts through the music, and the room falls silent. "We have a special presentation honoring our newlyweds' love story."
A projector illuminates the far wall with photographs that steal my breath entirely.
Teenage Shane and Audrey together at Hilmond Academy. Walking hallways hand-in-hand, young love evident in every pixel. Studying together in the library, heads bent close over textbooks.
The images are devastatingly realistic—AI-generated perfection creating memories that never existed.
Shane takes the microphone, his voice carrying across the hushed room.
"This is Audrey and me at sixteen, already inseparable. Here we are in the library where we first fell in love, studying together every afternoon while everyone else attended parties we couldn't be bothered with. And this—this is prom night, when I told her she was the most beautiful girl I'd ever seen and I'd spend my life proving I deserved her."
He pauses, a smile playing at his lips.
"None of this actually happened. I was too blind to notice the extraordinary woman hiding in Hilmond's shadows. But here's the thing—who can prove otherwise now? Even when I was too foolish to see it: Audrey Lennox is exceptional, she is my love, and she has been since the first moment I was smart enough to really look at her."
I'm moving before he finishes speaking, rushing across the dance floor to kiss him while several guests wipe tears. His arms wrap around me, holding tight while applause thunders through the restaurant.
"Thank you for that beautiful alternate reality." I whisper against his lips. "Thank you for giving us the history we deserved."
"Mom, wait—I'm confused." Oliver appears beside us, his expression genuinely puzzled. "You and Dad didn't actually talk in school? But those pictures looked so real."
Laughter erupts around us, and Shane kneels to Oliver's level with patient warmth.
"The AI made it up, buddy. But sometimes the best stories are the ones we create together, even if they didn't happen exactly that way. Your mom and I found each other eventually—that's what matters."
The dance floor reopens as the DJ launches into something upbeat. Shane's mouth brushes my ear, voice dropping to something intimate.
"Everyone seems thoroughly distracted by dancing and champagne. I noticed several private rooms upstairs during our venue tour. Perhaps we could escape for a few moments alone—celebrate our marriage more personally before we're required to be social again?"
"Lead the way, Mr. Reed."
We slip through the crowd unnoticed, climbing stairs to the first available door. Shane pushes it open, and we both freeze.
Kara and Paul are locked in passionate embrace against the far wall, so consumed by each other that they don't break apart even when the door opens.
I catch a glimpse of Paul's hands tangled in Kara's hair, her fingers gripping his jacket, before Shane quietly closes the door again.
We stare at each other in the hallway, then burst into laughter that echoes off the walls.
"Well, it appears our best man and maid of honor have resolved their differences rather dramatically." Shane's grin carries wicked delight. "Should we find another room?"
"Definitely another room." I pull him toward me, pressing my back against the door behind which our friends appear to be writing their own second-chance story. "I love you infinitely, Shane Reed. More than I ever thought possible, more than words can properly express."
"You have no idea how much I love you, Audrey." His forehead rests against mine, breath warm on my lips. "More with every passing day. More than I knew I was capable of feeling. You and Oliver are my entire world now."
His mouth finds mine in a kiss that seals everything—past and present and future tangled together in perfect promise.
I think about the tattoo on my lower back. Audax. Brave. I got it before prom night, needing something permanent to give myself courage to approach the golden boy who never saw me.
That single act of bravery led to Oliver. To this empire we'll build together. To standing here as Shane Reed's wife, loved completely and chosen deliberately.
Sometimes the most reckless moments create the most beautiful futures.
