Marrying My Secret Baby Daddy

Chapter 26

Ch. 26 / 30 May 07, 2026

POV Audrey

"I don't know what to say." His voice emerges strange, hollow in ways I've never heard. "Learning that I have an eight-year-old son—a child who has existed in this world for nearly a decade without my knowledge—it feels surreal. Disorienting in ways I cannot adequately describe."

He rises from the sofa, moving toward the window where Seattle's lights scatter across the darkness. His back is rigid, shoulders carrying tension that radiates through the space between us.

"It's one thing to accept becoming a stepfather, Audrey. To prepare myself for entering a child's life as a supporting figure, someone who arrives after the foundation has already been laid. But this—discovering that Oliver is mine, that he carries my blood, that I've missed every single milestone of his existence—"

His hand presses flat against the glass, and something in his posture breaks.

"I feel as though you've treated me cruelly. Perhaps that's not fair to say, but I need you to understand the magnitude of what you've just revealed. And I don't think I deserved this deception."

The accusation lands somewhere deep and vulnerable, drawing fresh tears down my cheeks. I rush to fill the terrible silence before it swallows us both.

"Oliver is brilliant, Shane. Genuinely, remarkably brilliant in ways that take my breath away every single day. He swims competitively—started lessons at four and qualified for regional championships by six. And his mind works exactly like yours, this strategic precision that analyzes problems from every angle before committing to action. He negotiates with his teachers, with his nanny, with me—and he wins more often than I care to admit."

Shane turns from the window, his gray eyes—Oliver's eyes—holding mine with exhausted intensity.

"How can you possibly know these similarities extend beyond physical resemblance? We have only just begun knowing each other, Audrey. How can you claim to recognize my traits in him?"

The question demands the complete truth. Everything I've hidden, everything I've carried alone for years—it all rises to the surface now, refusing to be contained any longer.

"Because I studied you, Shane. For years before that prom night, I studied you from the shadows of Hilmond Academy with the obsessive dedication of someone who had nothing else to hope for."

My voice breaks on the confession, the humiliation of it burning through my chest.

"I memorized your schedule within a month of falling in love with you. I knew which classes you had, which hallways you walked, which table you claimed in the dining hall. I watched your swim practices from the bleachers where nobody ever looked—hidden in the corners where invisible girls like me belonged."

His expression shifts, something softening beneath the shock.

"You were exceptional in the water," I continue, tears streaming freely now. "Powerful and graceful in ways that made everyone else look clumsy by comparison. I would sit there for hours, pretending to study, watching you slice through lap after lap. And when Oliver showed the same natural affinity for swimming, when his coaches used the same words to describe him that I'd heard whispered about you—I knew. I knew he was yours in every way that mattered."

Shane crosses the distance between us slowly, sinking back onto the sofa beside me. His hand finds my cheek, thumb brushing away tears with devastating gentleness.

"I regret not noticing you." His voice carries something like wonder, something like grief. "Such a treasure hidden in Hilmond's corridors, watching me from shadows I never thought to examine. If I had seen you, Audrey—if I had paid attention to anything beyond my own desperate performance of perfection—our story might have begun so differently. You might have been mine from the start, openly and honestly."

"But we're here now." I lean into his touch despite myself, desperate for the comfort he's offering. "We're still close, still together, and I genuinely admire the man you've become."

Shane's laugh emerges soft, unexpected. "Is this a declaration of love, Audrey? Because it certainly sounds like one, and I want to be certain I'm interpreting correctly before I respond inappropriately."

"Absolutely not." The protest escapes before I can stop it, my defenses rising automatically. "I'm simply being supportive in a moment of emotional vulnerability, which I know how to do because I'm not actually the monster you probably think I am right now. You're exploiting my guilt and my exhaustion and my—"

He kisses me mid-sentence.

The surprise melts into response almost immediately, my body relaxing against his as if it remembers what my mind keeps trying to forget.

His mouth moves against mine with tender urgency, and I think—perhaps the worst has passed. Perhaps we can survive this after all.

When he pulls back, his forehead rests against mine, breath warm on my lips.

"The hardest part may still lie ahead." The warning carries weight I don't want to examine. "We haven't discussed how to tell Oliver, how to explain to our families, how to navigate the thousand complications this creates for the merger, the public narrative, everything we've built these past weeks."

"I know." Fear rushes back, overwhelming the brief peace his kiss provided. "And I keep thinking about what you said at the gallery—about children being chaos, about nobody sane wanting that disorder in their lives. Romy's dynasty pressure, her obsession with heirs and legacy and proper bloodlines. Whether you're genuinely prepared to enter Oliver's life now that all these truths stand exposed, or whether you'll realize that a ready-made family is more complication than you actually wanted."

"I was an idiot." Shane's voice drops to something raw, stripped of every defense I've seen him wear. "Those words at the gallery, my dismissiveness, I didn't understand what I was rejecting. I was speaking from ignorance, from a lifetime of avoiding anything that might make me vulnerable. But now I want to do everything correctly. For Oliver. For you. For the family I never knew existed until this morning."

I exhale relief so intense it hurts, fresh tears spilling down my cheeks. His mouth finds mine again—not gentle this time but fierce, claiming, joy and relief and hunger tangled together until I can't separate them anymore.

His hands slide beneath my sweater, finding warm skin. I pull at his t-shirt, suddenly desperate for the contact we discovered in San Francisco—for the physical proof that this is real, that he wants me, that we might actually survive the truth I've finally confessed.

We don't make it to the bedroom.

The sofa receives us instead, clothing scattered across expensive leather, his body covering mine with protective warmth. Every touch carries new meaning now—not just desire but something deeper, something that acknowledges the impossible gift fate has given us.

A second chance. A family neither of us planned but both of us might actually deserve.

Tangled together in the aftermath, Shane's fingers trace lazy patterns across my bare shoulder. The city glitters beyond the windows, indifferent to the magnitude of what's just shifted between us.

"Oliver is mine," he whispers against my hair. "Our son. I have a son."

The wonder in his voice undoes me completely.

And then he gives me pleasure that I cannot refuse, he makes me moan his name, forgetting my own.
