Chapter 20: Growing Closer, Conflicting Desires
Having Leandro around had become something I both craved and feared. Every moment with him was a breath of fresh air, and yet, it was suffocating at the same time. He was there for me in ways no one else had been. He listened when I spoke about my day, when I complained about the smallest inconveniences, and he’d somehow always find a way to fix it, even if it was just by being there.
But then the nights came, and everything changed. It wasn’t just about fixing things anymore; it was about feeling something more — something intense and raw.
Every night, he slipped into my room, his presence filling the air with a tension I couldn’t ignore. And with each night that passed, I realized I wanted more of him. Not just physically, but emotionally, too.
Tonight, we were lying in my bed, the dim light from the lamp casting shadows across his face. I watched him quietly, my mind racing with the questions I had been holding in.
“What do you really want, Leandro?” I asked, my voice breaking the silence between us. My heart was pounding as I waited for him to answer, but I wasn’t sure if I even knew what I was hoping for. I just needed to know.
He shifted slightly, propping himself up on his elbow as he looked at me. His gaze softened a little, but his expression remained unreadable. “I told you already,” he said quietly, his voice steady but lacking the usual confidence. “I want to lead the Moretti family.”
I nodded, taking in his words, but I didn’t feel the certainty I had expected to hear. His tone was different, like there was something more he wasn’t saying.
“Do you really?” I asked, narrowing my eyes as I studied him. “Is that all you want?”
Leandro hesitated, his eyes briefly drifting away as if searching for the right words. When he finally spoke, his voice was quieter, more vulnerable than I had ever heard it.
“I’ve been having second thoughts,” he admitted, the weight of the words hanging in the air between us. “I’ve been questioning whether that’s really what I want anymore. I enjoy being with you too much, Isabella. I’ve started forgetting about my roots. About what I’m supposed to be doing.”
I felt a twist in my chest. It wasn’t just about the physical attraction anymore. He was giving me a piece of himself, a vulnerability I hadn’t expected to see.
“You’re not just playing a role, you know,” I said softly, reaching out to touch his arm. “You don’t have to be the same person they expect you to be. You don’t have to follow that path if it’s not what you want.”
Leandro’s eyes met mine again.
“It’s not that simple, Isabella,” he said, his voice strained. “I don’t know if I can break free from everything I’ve known. Everything they expect from me.”
I sighed, my fingers tracing the lines of his hand. “I understand that,” I said, my voice quiet. “But you don’t have to follow their plan. You don’t have to stay in this cage.”
His hand tightened around mine, his gaze growing intense. “I don’t know who I am without it,” he whispered, almost to himself. “But when I’m with you, it feels like I’m something else. Something more than just the son of the Moretti family.”
I didn’t know how to respond. The weight of what he had just said sank in, but I couldn’t ignore the way my heart fluttered at his words. He was lost, but he wasn’t lost when he was with me.
“Maybe that’s a good thing,” I said, the words slipping out before I could stop them. “Maybe being with me is helping you figure it out.”
Leandro’s lips quirked into a small smile, though his eyes were still heavy with thought. “You make it hard to think straight, Isabella,” he said, his voice quiet but filled with something I couldn’t quite decipher.
“I’m not the one making this complicated,” I shot back, my voice tinged with frustration. “You’re the one who’s overthinking everything.”
He chuckled, but it was a dry, almost empty sound. “Maybe. But I can’t help it. I’ve been living a life where everything was planned for me. This” — he gestured between us — “is a mess I can’t control.”
I leaned closer, my face just inches from his. “We are a mess, Leandro. But sometimes that’s what makes life worth living. The unpredictability, the chaos.”
He didn’t say anything right away. Instead, his eyes searched mine, like he was trying to understand everything I was saying, everything I meant. Finally, he spoke, his voice rough and low.
“Do you really think we can keep doing this? Keep playing this game, hiding everything from everyone?”
I thought about it, the weight of our situation sinking deeper into my chest. We were both trapped — in our families’ expectations, in the life they had planned for us. But the more I spent time with Leandro, the more I realized I didn’t want to be trapped anymore.
“I don’t know what the future holds,” I admitted, my voice soft. “But for now, I don’t want to think about it. I just want this. I want you.”
He leaned in closer, his breath hot against my skin, his hand slipping to the back of my neck, pulling me toward him. “I can’t give you a future, Isabella. Not like this. Not in the way you want.”
“But I don’t need the future right now,” I said, almost breathless. “I just need you. And right now, that’s all that matters.”
There was a pause, and for a moment, I thought he might pull away, might remind me of the dangers we were playing with. But instead, his lips brushed mine in a soft kiss — a kiss that was full of need, full of things unsaid.
“I’m not the man you think I am,” he whispered against my lips. “But I want to be. For you.”
And that was all I needed to hear.
