The Venetian palazzo ballroom glitters like a fever dream.
Chandeliers drip crystal tears above a sea of masked strangers, their faces hidden behind raven feathers and beaten gold, behind lace and leather and secrets no one will confess come morning.
Champagne fizzes in glasses that pass from hand to hand without ever reaching lips, and the orchestra plays something haunting, something that vibrates in my chest like a second heartbeat.
I step through the archway in the backless emerald gown Tessa chose, the silk catching light like liquid gemstones, my face hidden behind a filigree mask that covers everything but my mouth.
"Champagne, signora?"
A waiter materializes at my elbow, silver tray balanced perfectly, his own mask a simple black domino that reveals nothing.
"No, thank you. I'm looking for someone."
"Ah."
His smile is knowing beneath the mask's edge.
"Aren't we all, tonight? The palazzo has many rooms, many shadows. Some find what they seek in the gardens, some in the galleries above. And some find what they did not know they were seeking at all."
"That sounds like a warning."
"It's an invitation, signora."
He gestures toward the grand staircase with his free hand.
"The north corridor is quieter, if you prefer intimacy to spectacle. Many couples have found their way there tonight."
I thank him and move deeper into the crowd, silk whispering against my thighs with every step.
The mask feels like shedding a skin I've worn so long I forgot it wasn't mine. No one here knows I'm Elara Voss, neglected wife, failed mother, ghost haunting her own penthouse.
Tonight I'm just a woman in emerald silk, searching.
Every tall silhouette makes my pulse stutter. Every flash of familiar black hair sends electricity skittering down my spine.
I scan the crowd like a hunter, like a woman starving, like someone who's forgotten what hope tastes like and suddenly remembers.
Then a hand settles low on my spine.
Warm. Possessive. Exactly the way Caspian once touched me, in the early days when his fingers learned the geography of my body.
I freeze, breath catching in my throat.
"I've been waiting for you, little star."
The pet name hits me like a fist to the chest.
He hasn't called me that since before the miscarriage, since the nights when he'd trace constellations across my bare skin and whisper that I was the only light worth navigating by.
It's him. It's really him.
I turn slowly, afraid the vision will shatter if I move too fast.
"You came."
My voice is embarrassingly fragile.
"I wasn't sure you would, after everything I said at dinner. I thought maybe you'd changed your mind, or that this was some kind of test, or that I'd imagined the whole invitation because I wanted it so badly."
His thumb traces a slow circle against the small of my back. No words. Just that maddening, deliberate touch.
"The roses were beautiful, by the way. White roses, just like our wedding."
I'm babbling now, nervous energy spilling out of me like wine from a cracked glass.
"I cried when I saw them. Isn't that pathetic? Two dozen flowers and I fell apart completely. Tessa thinks I'm crazy for coming here tonight. She thinks you're incapable of—"
I catch myself, swallow hard.
"It doesn't matter what she thinks. You're here. That's what matters."
He pulls me closer in response, his chest solid against my back, his breath warm on my neck. Still silent. Still letting his hands speak the language his mouth refuses.
"I've missed you so much."
The confession tears out of me before I can stop it.
"Not just the intimacy, though God knows I've missed that too. I miss talking to you. I miss the way you used to tell me about your day, the ridiculous stories about board meetings and incompetent executives. I miss falling asleep to the sound of your voice. I miss being your little star."
His lips brush the shell of my ear. A question without words.
"Yes."
I turn in his arms, facing him now, my palms flat against his chest. His heart pounds beneath my fingers, fast and hard.
"Whatever you're asking, yes."
His hand slides from my spine to my hip, and the answer is in the way his fingers tighten. The way he guides me through the crowd with the confidence of a man who knows exactly where he's going.
"I've been so scared."
I whisper it against his shoulder as we move through shadowed corridors.
"Scared that I'd lost you forever. Scared that the man I married was gone and I'd never get him back. But you finally heard me."
He stops walking. Cups my face in both hands. Tilts my chin up until I'm drowning in eyes I can barely see behind his gold mask.
And then he kisses me, soft and slow, and it feels like an answer.
Yes. I heard you. I'm here.
We pass through velvet drapes heavy with dust and secrets. Up a narrow staircase lit only by moonlight streaming through stained glass, colors bleeding across the stone floor.
"I don't know why you're not talking."
My voice is smaller now, more vulnerable than I've allowed myself to be in years.
"Maybe this is part of it. Maybe you're showing me that actions matter more than words, because God knows your words have hurt me enough. If this is how we start over, I'll take it. I'll take whatever version of you is willing to come back to me."
The alcove he leads me to is small and private, a space carved from darkness itself. Moonlight slices through an arched window, painting everything in shades of silver and shadow.
His hands find the clasp at the back of my dress.
"I love you," I gasp, the words breaking free like a fucking dam I couldn’t hold back. "I never stopped. Even when I hated you so much I couldn’t fucking breathe. Please, tell me there’s still something left between us."
He answers with his mouth on my throat, his teeth grazing sensitive skin, sending shivers down my spine.
His hands slide silk from my shoulders, lowering the straps until the fabric pools around my waist, leaving my breasts exposed to the cool air.
Masks stay on. Clothes fall away.
He lifts me up onto the edge of a windowsill, leaning me back as my legs wrap around his waist. His fingers slide between my thighs, teasing and stroking until I'm panting with need.
His hardness presses against me, and he enters with a slow thrust that has us both gasping for air.
Our eyes lock, intense and pleading as we begin to move together in a primal dance.
Every thrust feels like the apology I never got, every kiss like the love letters he stopped writing, every whispered gasp against my skin like a vow renewed in darkness.
My fingers dig into his shoulders as moonlight traces the geography of our tangled bodies - sweat glistening on our skin.
Quiet sobs escape me while pleasure builds like a storm, tears streaming beneath my mask as I arch into him.
I can feel the gratification approaching, a storm brewing within me, and when it finally erupts, it's like a surge of electricity.
My body convulses as my legs quiver around his waist, gripping him tightly as I reach my climax.
He soon follows suit, his guttural moans muffled against the nape of my neck.
This is us. This is everything we have longed for, clawing its way back into existence.
