His Virgin, His Concubine

Chapter 24

Ch. 24 / 30 Apr 06, 2026

The garden concert unfolds with deceptive tranquility. I sit near the fountain with Esma, trying to appear relaxed while my mind catalogs every conversation within hearing distance. The investigation into Kemal continues, and I've learned to listen while seeming distracted by music or embroidery.

"The instruments are particularly lovely tonight," Esma observes, her voice carrying genuine appreciation.

"They are," I agree, though I'm more focused on the group of women to our left discussing family letters from various provinces.

Servants circulate with trays of refreshments—honeyed figs, delicate pastries, jeweled cups filled with chilled sherbet. The sweetness perfumes the air, mingling with jasmine and roses.

"Leyla." Gülnar's voice makes me tense reflexively. She glides toward us with that predatory grace, a servant following with a tray of drinks. "How lovely to see you enjoying the festivities. I was beginning to think you'd forgotten how to relax among us."

I force myself to meet her gaze without flinching. "The music is beautiful. It would be a shame to miss it."

"Indeed." Her smile sharpens like a blade. "You look parched. Here—" She selects a jeweled cup from the tray, the vessel catching lamplight as she extends it toward me. "This sherbet is particularly refreshing. A new recipe from the kitchens, sweetened with imported honey and rose water."

Every instinct screams warning, but refusing would create a scene. I take the cup with careful hands, aware of every eye tracking the exchange.

"How thoughtful," I manage, the weight heavy in my palm.

"Drink," Gülnar encourages, her tone honey-sweet. "Before it warms. The flavor is best when chilled."

I lift the cup toward my lips, the rim cool against my skin. The scent hits me first—too sweet, cloying, with something underneath that makes my stomach clench. Almond. Faint but unmistakable, cutting through the rose water and honey.

Nausea rolls through me in a wave. My hand trembles slightly, liquid sloshing against the jeweled rim. I know this scent. Everyone in the palace knows this scent from childhood warnings about bitter almonds and the death they promise.

Time stretches impossibly thin. The cup hovers at my lips, Gülnar's expectant gaze burning into me, and I'm frozen between drinking and refusing.

"Don't."

Mehmet's voice cracks through the garden like lightning. I didn't hear him approach, but suddenly he's there, moving with controlled violence. His hand strikes the cup from my grasp before I can process the command.

The vessel shatters against stone. Sherbet splashes across marble in a crimson stain that looks disturbingly like blood.

The garden goes absolutely silent. Even the musicians falter, notes dying mid-phrase.

Mehmet's gaze never leaves mine, searching my face with frantic intensity. "Did you drink any? Even a sip?"

"No," I whisper, my voice shaking. "I was about to, but—no. I didn't."

Relief crashes across his expression so visceral it stops my breath. Then his attention pivots toward Gülnar, and his eyes go cold in a way that promises death.

"Guards." The command carries absolute authority. Six men materialize from positions around the garden. "Search the kitchens. Find who prepared this sherbet and bring them here. Now."

They move immediately, weapons drawn, their efficiency terrifying.

The harem women sit frozen, eyes darting between Mehmet, me, and Gülnar. Some look shocked, others fascinated. A few wear expressions of satisfaction that curdles my stomach.

Gülnar stands perfectly still, her face arranged into concern. "Your Highness, surely there's been some misunderstanding. The sherbet was prepared by palace kitchens—"

"Be silent." Mehmet's voice drops to something lethal. He positions himself between us, his body a barrier, his protective stance unmistakable. "You will not speak unless addressed directly. And if I discover you've orchestrated what I suspect, your punishment will be neither swift nor merciful."

The threat hangs heavy in the perfumed air.

My legs threaten to give out. I'm shaking—reaction setting in now that immediate danger has passed. Mehmet must sense it because his hand finds mine, squeezing tight enough that I feel the controlled fury thrumming through him.

"Breathe," he murmurs, quiet enough that only I hear. "You're safe. I have you."

The guards return quickly with two terrified kitchen workers—one young, one older with a gray face.

"We found these preparing tonight's refreshments," the lead guard reports. "The older one tried to flee."

"Search them. Check everything they touched."

Within minutes, they produce a small vial from the older woman's sleeve—oily residue clinging to glass.

"Test it," Mehmet commands.

A guard uncorks it carefully, dipping cloth into the contents before holding it near a lamp. The fabric smolders, releasing acrid smoke. Several women gag. The bitter almond scent intensifies.

"Bitter almonds," the guard confirms. "Concentrated. Enough to kill a dozen people."

The harem erupts in shocked whispers. Women press hands to mouths, edging away from Gülnar.

I watch her mask crack—not completely, but enough to see the cold fury beneath.

"I know nothing about this," she says desperately. "These servants acted alone—"

"The poison was in sherbet you personally selected." Mehmet's words cut like blades. "You ensured it reached Leyla. You encouraged her to drink quickly. Your handmaid was discovered destroying evidence."

He addresses the gathered women. "Gülnar is stripped of all titles. She will be exiled immediately. Her belongings forfeit, connections severed. She leaves with nothing."

"You can't—" Gülnar starts, but Mehmet silences her with a look.

"Be grateful I'm showing mercy. Attempted murder of someone under imperial protection traditionally warrants execution." His gaze sweeps across everyone. "Anyone who threatens Leyla threatens me. The consequences will be absolute."

Guards flank Gülnar. She doesn't resist, but her eyes find mine. The hatred there is pure and terrifying.

"This isn't over," she mouths silently.

Then she's gone.

The women begin whispering—some horrified, others gleeful. I hear fragments about justice and how quickly power shifts.

I'm barely processing it. My mind replays the moment—the cup at my lips, the almond scent, how close I came to drinking death.

"Come." Mehmet's hand finds my back. "You're done here."

I let him lead me through corridors, my legs mechanical. We reach his chambers and the door closes.

Only then do I start shaking—violent tremors that make my teeth chatter. Mehmet pulls me against his chest.

"I won't let anyone harm you," he says, his voice rough. "Never again. I swear it."

The promise settles over me. I press my face against his chest and let the suppressed terror break free.

She tried to kill me. Over jealousy and wounded pride.

And Mehmet saved me.

"Thank you," I whisper. "If you hadn't—"

"Don't." His arms tighten. "Don't finish that thought. You're alive. You're safe. That's all that matters."

We stand like that for long minutes, his heartbeat steady beneath my ear. Eventually, the shaking subsides.

"How did you know?" I ask. "About the poison?"

"The almond scent. I've been trained to recognize it since childhood." His hand strokes my hair. "When I saw you lift that cup, when I caught that smell—" His voice breaks. "I've never moved faster."

The weight of his promise lingers as we stand wrapped together. Gülnar is gone, exiled, stripped of everything.

But her hatred remains. Somehow, I know this isn't truly over.

The thought should terrify me. Instead, standing in Mehmet's arms with his protection absolute, I feel something else entirely.

Safe.

For the first time since arriving at this palace, I feel genuinely safe.
