Felicia led the children into the training hall. The space stretched wide—mats covering the floor, mirrors lining one wall, equipment stacked in corners. She positioned Danny and Max near the center mats. Her hands rested on their shoulders.
"Simple exercises only." Her voice came out clear, firm. No negotiation.
The children nodded. Danny's jaw set with determination. Max fidgeted with the hem of his shirt.
The door opened. Damien stepped inside. Stopped immediately at the entrance. Didn't cross the threshold. Didn't assume.
"I want to be here." His voice stayed calm, careful. "But I don't want to interfere. May I?"
Permission. He asked for it outright.
Felicia turned. Met his eyes across the space. "Be here." She paused. "But you don't interfere."
"Agreed." One nod. Clean. Final.
He moved to the wall. Leaned against it. Arms crossed. Observing. Not commanding.
The instructor—a middle-aged woman with tight braids—approached the children. She demonstrated a simple stretch. Arms up. Bend to the side. Hold. Return to center.
Danny followed perfectly. His small body mimicked her movements with precision. Max tried. His arms went up. Then tangled. He leaned too far. Lost his balance.
His knees hit the mat. Hard.
Felicia moved instantly. Two steps forward. Maintaining space. Not hovering. Just close enough.
Damien shifted. His shoulders came off the wall. One foot forward. Instinct driving him. Then stopped. Froze mid-motion.
He saw her. Already there. Already handling it.
His jaw clenched. His hands curled into fists. Then released. He forced himself back against the wall. Stayed there.
Felicia knelt beside Max. Her hands checked his knees. No blood. No scrapes. Just red marks. "Stand up." Her voice stayed calm, steady. "You can."
Max's eyes watered. Not crying. Just frustrated. His small hand reached for hers.
She took it. Pulled him gently to his feet. "Try again."
Max nodded. Wiped his face with his free hand. Turned back to the instructor.
Damien watched. Silent. His throat worked. But he didn't move. Didn't offer suggestions. Didn't act like he knew better.
The instructor continued. More stretches. Balance exercises. Small movements meant for children.
Danny executed a turn perfectly. Stable. Controlled.
"Good job." Damien's voice came out quiet. Soft enough not to startle. Loud enough to be heard.
Danny's head turned. Looked at him. No smile. No softening. Just acknowledgment.
Felicia's gaze snapped to Damien. Sharp. Assessing. Watching for pressure. For pushing. For any hint of manipulation.
He stayed against the wall. Didn't move closer. Didn't follow up with more praise or instructions. Just left it there. One simple statement.
She turned back to the children. Didn't stop him. But her shoulders stayed tense. Alert.
The training continued. Twenty minutes. Then thirty. Max grew slower. His movements less precise. Tiredness bleeding through.
Felicia called it. "That's enough."
The instructor nodded. Dismissed. Danny and Max walked toward her. Max rubbed his eyes.
She led them into the corridor. Cool air. Quiet after the echo of the training hall. She pulled a napkin from her pocket. Knelt. Wiped Max's knees clean. Gentle. Thorough.
Footsteps approached. Damien. Two steps closer than before. Still maintaining distance. "Can I carry them?" His voice stayed restrained, careful. "If they're tired."
Felicia stood. Looked at Max. His eyes already half-closed. Then at Danny. Still upright. Still awake.
"You can take one." She made the decision instantly. "Max. He's sleepy."
Damien approached slowly. Knelt in front of Max. "Is this okay?"
Max nodded. Reached for him.
Damien lifted him. Careful. So careful. His arms positioned to support without squeezing. Without crushing. Max's head dropped immediately to his shoulder. Settled there. Trusting.
Felicia's chest tightened. She swallowed it down. Started walking.
Damien fell into step beside her. Not touching. Not crowding. Just there. Parallel.
She didn't lag. Didn't speed up. Kept pace. Her breathing stayed even. Controlled. But her awareness of him—of Max in his arms, of the space between them—burned sharp.
Danny walked on Damien's other side. His small voice cut through the quiet. "Why weren't you around before?"
Sharp. Direct. Child's cruelty wrapped in simple truth.
Felicia's steps faltered. Caught. She kept walking.
Damien's jaw shifted. "I made bad decisions." His voice stayed level, honest. "I'm fixing them now."
No blaming others and no excuses. Danny considered this; he said nothing and kept walking.
Felicia stopped, just for a second, and turned her head. She looked at Damien.
"Honesty is the minimum I'll accept." Her voice came out even, stripped of heat.
Damien met her eyes. "I know."
He didn't reach for her. Didn't try to bridge the gap. Just stood there with Max sleeping against his shoulder and truth between them.
Felicia turned forward. Started walking again. Her pulse beat steady in her throat. Her hands stayed loose at her sides.
They reached the wing doors and Damien carefully and respectfully followed her. The children's room waited ahead. She pushed that door open too. Stood aside.
Damien carried Max to the bed. Laid him down. Gentle and precise. Tucked the blanket around him without being asked.
Then stepped back. Two full steps. Creating distance without prompting.
Felicia watched. Noted it. Filed it away. She didn't correct him or adjust anything. He'd done it right.
Danny climbed into his own bed and yawned. Felicia moved to him. Smoothed his hair. "Rest."
Damien stayed by the door, waiting. Not assuming he could stay.
Felicia faced him and the space between them felt charged. Heavy. Full of things unsaid.
"Thank you." The words came out quiet. Unfamiliar in her mouth.
Damien's eyes widened. Just a fraction. "You don't need to—"
"I do." She cut him off. Not harsh. Just firm. "You respected the boundaries."
He nodded. Once. "I'll keep respecting them."
She studied his face. The tension in his jaw. The way his hands stayed carefully at his sides. The exhaustion around his eyes from constant self-control.
Something in her chest shifted. Cracked. Small. Almost imperceptible. But there.
"Tomorrow." Her voice dropped lower. "You can be at training again."
His breathing changed. Deeper. Relief bleeding through. "Thank you."
She didn't respond. Just turned back to the children. Danny already asleep. Max breathing deep and even.
Behind her, Damien's footsteps moved away. Slow. Measured. The door closed with a soft click.
Felicia stood between the two beds. Her hands curled into fists. Then released. The ache in her chest spread. Unfamiliar. Dangerous.
He'd held Max. Her son had trusted him enough to fall asleep in his arms. And he'd been careful. Respectful. Honest.
Everything she'd needed him to be. Everything she'd thought impossible.
Her throat tightened. She sat on the edge of Max's bed. Her hand rested on his small shoulder. Warm. Safe. Sleeping peacefully after being held by his father.
The walls she'd built so carefully trembled. Not falling. Not yet. But cracking. Hairline fractures spreading through stone she'd thought unbreakable.
And the terrifying part was that she'd given permission. Tomorrow. You can be there again. She'd invited him back. Had acknowledged what he'd done right. Had thanked him.
Her fingers pressed harder into Max's shoulder. Grounding herself. Reminding herself why she was here. Why the walls existed.
But the cracks kept spreading. And she didn't know how to stop them.
Or if stopping them was even still what she wanted.
