Goodbye, My Mate

Chapter 188

Ch. 188 / 291 Aug 06, 2025

Lucas' POV

I frowned as we stepped into the ballroom, my senses assaulted by the cacophony of voices and the overwhelming scent of alcohol and perfume. The room was filled with men and women dressed in their finest attire - suits tailored to perfection, gowns that shimmered under the chandeliers. But their faces told a different story. Some wore masks of polite indifference, others openly leered at the women who moved through the crowd with practiced grace.

"What happened to the decent ones in the Packs?" I asked Finn as we made our way through the crowd, my voice low but sharp.

"They're all gone," Finn said sadly, his gaze sweeping over the room as though he were cataloging every face. "They either surrounded the South or got out of the Kingdom altogether. I don't blame them—it's not exactly a place for decent folk anymore."

I turned to him sharply. "And what about us? Are we decent?"

Finn hesitated before answering. "We're survivors," he said simply. "And right now, we need you."

The weight of his words hit me like a ton of bricks. I stopped walking, my gaze fixed on a distant corner of the room where a group of men stood clustered together, their voices low and conspiratorial.

"You want me to lead them?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly despite my efforts to keep it steady.

Finn placed a hand on my shoulder, his touch firm but reassuring. "You're still the Alpha of the most prestigious pack in the North," he said. "Our people need their leader now more than ever."

I shook my head, frustration rising within me like bile. "I can't just… I can't just move on, Finn," I said, my voice breaking slightly. "Leah was everything to me."

Finn's expression softened, his eyes darkening with a grief that mirrored my own. "She was my sister-in-law," he said quietly. "Lucian took her from us - and I swear to you, Lucas, I will make him pay for that. But for now, we need to regroup, to gather our strength. We rely on each other. We're not like the Lycans, guided by power and conquest, systematically killing one another. For us - for our kind - family is the strongest bond. It's the only thing we can truly trust in this world."

His words cut through the fog of grief that had clouded my mind for so long. He was right - we were werewolves, bound by blood and loyalty, not by ambition or greed. And if there was one thing I knew for certain, it was that family meant everything to us.

"Okay," I said finally, my voice hoarse but resolute. "I'll gather the pack. But I won't stop searching for Leah—not now, not ever."

Finn nodded, a small, sad smile tugging at his lips. "I wouldn't expect any less from you, brother," he said. "We'll find justice for Leah. Together."

--

The Full Moon Ball had been an endless ordeal, filled with meaningless chatter and forced smiles. As the night dragged on, I found myself growing increasingly restless, yearning for escape from the stifling atmosphere of the grand hall. When the opportunity arose, I slipped away unnoticed, my feet guiding me through the labyrinthine streets of the city towards the slave market.

The moon hung low in the sky, casting an eerie glow over the bustling marketplace. The air was thick with the scent of sweat and spices, mingling with the faint whimpers of those confined within the market's walls. My thoughts drifted to the encounter with the Moon Goddess - it had been surreal, almost dreamlike, yet undeniably real. Her presence lingered in my mind, a haunting reminder of the responsibilities that weighed heavily upon me.

As I wandered through the crowded stalls, my gaze fell upon a familiar face. Dr. Jafar stood amidst the chaos, his expression somber as he tended to a wounded slave. Recognition dawned on both of us simultaneously, and we exchanged a brief nod before finding a quiet corner to speak.

"Dr. Jafar," I began, my voice tinged with curiosity, "it's been a long time."

He looked up at me, his eyes reflecting a mix of sorrow and relief. "Indeed, Your Highness. I left the pack shortly after you cast Josephine away."

The mention of her name pierced my heart like a dagger. Josephine... my sister in all but blood. Her absence had left a void that no amount of time could fill. "How is she?" I asked, though deep down, I feared the answer.

Dr. Jafar's expression darkened. "She passed away during childbirth," he murmured, his voice barely audible above the cacophony of the market. "Darren was there, but it was too late."

A wave of guilt washed over me, overwhelming my senses. Josephine had been more than just a companion; she was family. And now, her death rested heavily on my conscience. "I failed her," I whispered, my chest tightening with anguish.

"She was like a sister to me," I confessed, my voice trembling. "And I failed Basil too... he trusted me to protect her."

Dr. Jafar placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder, his touch unexpectedly comforting. "You weren't alone in your grief," he said softly. "We all mourned her loss."

Our conversation took a darker turn as Dr. Jafar revealed his reasons for leaving the pack and becoming a rogue. "After Josephine's passing, I had nowhere to go," he admitted. "Finn found me, offered me a place here in the slave market. He saved my life."

Yet, despite Finn's apparent kindness, Dr. Jafar harbored reservations. "He's not whom he appears to be," he warned, his tone laced with caution. "Finn has lost his mind to revenge, and he won't stop until he's destroyed everything in his path."

His words sent a chill down my spine. I had always suspected Finn harbored dark intentions, but hearing it from someone I trusted added a new layer of dread to my thoughts.

"Keep an eye on him," Dr. Jafar urged, his eyes piercing mine with intensity. "He... He has done terrible things... both to himself and others... Some people want nothing more than to set the world ablaze."

I nodded solemnly, my expression calm despite the storm raging inside me. "I already knew Finn was wearing a mask," I confessed, my voice steady. "His schemes are no surprise to me."

Dr. Jafar's eyes widened slightly, acknowledging my insight. "Then you understand the gravity of this situation," he said, his voice lowering to a conspiratorial whisper.

"I do," I affirmed, determination hardening my resolve. "Dr. Jafar, thanking for trusting me and telling me this. I really appreciate it. I will stop Finn from endangering himself and the world."

"And I will follow you. I will be there with you, Alpha, if you let me." Dr. Jafar stared at me with an unwaving flicker in his eyes. "And... You need to take a look at Finn's study... That's all I can say."

Our conversation drew to a close with a shared nod of understanding.

As I walked away, the moonlight casting long shadows behind me.

I knew the good doctor was trying to tell me something. But what exactly does he mean?
