The café where it all began. Café Lumière's windows gleamed in the afternoon sun, the same glass that had framed Andrew and Hannah's kiss weeks ago.
Now Hannah sat in the corner booth, shoulders hunched like she was trying to disappear into the burgundy leather.
"You chose this place on purpose." Her voice trembled as I slid into the seat across from her, my heels announcing my arrival with sharp clicks against marble.
"Where else would we discuss your future?" I signaled the waitress with a casual flick of my wrist, then fixed Hannah with a stare that made her shrink further into her seat. "The place where you started this game seems appropriate for establishing the new rules."
"Rules?" Her fingers wrapped around her mug with white-knuckled desperation, the ceramic trembling slightly.
"Terms. Conditions. The price of your salvation." The waitress approached with practiced discretion. I ordered an espresso, then waited until she retreated. "You become a lover for both Andrew and me. Not one or the other. Both of us. Together."
The blood drained from Hannah's face so fast I thought she might faint. Her mouth opened, closed, opened again like a fish gasping for air.
"Both?" The word came out strangled.
"Is that a problem?" I leaned back, letting the leather creak with deliberate slowness.
"I don't—I've never—" She pressed her hand to her throat, pearl necklace catching the light. "With a woman, I mean. I don't know how—"
"You'll learn." The waitress returned with my espresso, setting it down with a soft clink. I stirred in sugar, the spoon ringing against porcelain like a tiny bell. "I'll handle your debts. All forty-seven thousand dollars. Gone. But in exchange, you belong to us."
"Andrew knows about this arrangement?"
"Andrew doesn't know about the money. He never will." I lifted the cup to my lips, savoring the bitter heat. "He thinks you want him desperately. Let him keep thinking that. Consider my financial assistance a generous favor between old friends."
Hannah's breathing quickened, her chest rising and falling beneath her silk blouse. "This is insane. You're asking me to—"
"I'm not asking anything." My voice cut through her protest like a blade through silk. "I'm telling you the terms. Accept them or drown in debt. Your choice."
I pulled out my phone. I kept it in my hand and tipped my chin toward hers. "Google it—how to submit properly. On your own phone. Study it like you're preparing for the most important exam of your life."
"Submit?" Her voice cracked, tears threatening at the corners of her eyes. "I thought that thing in your office—making me kneel—was just to humiliate me. To put me in my place for one moment."
"That is your place." The words landed like stones thrown into still water. "You're dependent whether you admit it or not. And I like control. I like dominance. I like watching people bend to my will."
Hannah's shoulders shook. A single tear escaped, tracking mascara down her cheek. "You're going to destroy me. That's what this is really about."
"No." I softened my tone strategically, leaning forward like a confidante. "This arrangement—this experience with you—it's actually improving things with Andrew. The passion, the fire. I want to keep that momentum. That requires trying new things, pushing boundaries."
"So I'm an experiment? A toy for you two to play with?"
"You're an investment. And I protect my investments." My fingers grazed her wrist, feeling her pulse race beneath the skin. "Think of it as care, Hannah. No one plans to ruin you in every sense. Just to reshape you into something more useful."
The lie flowed like honey from my tongue. If she broke completely, shattered into pieces, I wouldn't lose a moment's sleep. By then Andrew would be mine alone again, and Hannah would be nothing but a discarded sketch.
Hannah's shoulders dropped in defeat. "When?"
"This weekend. Saturday night. Eight o'clock sharp."
"Both of you will be there?"
"Both of us." I pulled out my checkbook, the Mont Blanc pen gleaming as I wrote with theatrical flourish. "Ten thousand dollars. A down payment on your new life."
Her eyes widened at the amount, pupils dilating with desperate greed. "Angie—"
"Take it before I change my mind." I tore the check free with a decisive rip.
She folded it with trembling hands, tucking it into her purse like a guilty secret. "Saturday then."
"Wear something red. The color of sin." I stood, tossing a fifty on the table. "And Hannah? Don't disappoint me. I have very specific expectations."
The drive back to the office passed in a blur of conquered traffic and closing deals. Three acquisitions finalized, two hostile takeovers initiated, one competitor crushed. The high of control sang through my veins by evening.
My phone rang as I pulled into the garage. Miriam's name blazed across the screen.
"Darling, clear your evening immediately."
"I have plans—"
"Cancel them. I'm taking you somewhere extraordinary. Somewhere that will feed that delicious darkness you've been cultivating."
"Miriam, I can't just—"
"No arguments. You've been orchestrating these elaborate power games for weeks. Time to celebrate your transformation properly." Her laugh crackled through the speaker like electricity. "I'll text you the address. Don't dress for the theater—dress like you want to make every person in the room kneel."
"What exactly are you planning?"
"Something worthy of the new you. The predator you've become." The line went dead.
The apartment welcomed me with shadows and silence. I showered off the day's victories, water scalding against skin still humming with adrenaline. Standing before my closet, I selected armor for whatever battle Miriam had arranged.
Emerald silk, clean as a blade: a column dress that skimmed without shouting, one shoulder bare, the other traced by a narrow strap. A pale, tailored coat to civilize the shine. Heels with a fine ankle strap—elegant, not loud. Hair swept back, eyes defined in soft smoke, mouth a muted plum. Jewelry minimal: a white-gold cuff at the wrist and a slim line at the throat. Polished, precise, and ready for whatever she’d arranged.
My phone illuminated with Miriam's text. An address downtown, somewhere I didn't recognize. Something new.
I stood before Andrew's painting—Hannah and I twisted together in his fever dream. Soon fantasy would become reality, but choreographed by my hands alone.
Another text arrived. Andrew.
Have fun tonight. Working late at the studio—you inspired me at Julian's exhibition ♥️ That passion, that fire. I need to capture it on canvas.
Satisfaction spread through me like wildfire. For the first time in years, everything aligned perfectly. Andrew, obsessed and painting. Hannah, terrified and purchased. Me, in absolute control.
"You thought you were the artist," I whispered to the painting. "But I'm the one composing this masterpiece."
My reflection in the hallway mirror stopped me cold. The woman staring back bore no resemblance to the hollow executive who'd discovered her husband's affair. This woman radiated power, danger, the particular beauty that comes from knowing exactly what you want and how to take it.
"I'm going to take everything," I told my reflection. "From life. From Andrew. From Hannah. Even if breaking them is the price."
I grabbed my clutch, checked my lipstick one final time. Whatever Miriam had planned, I was ready. The night stretched ahead, full of possibility and danger.
