Crown Me in Vengeance

Chapter 11:

Ch. 11 / 20 Sep 10, 2025

The car rolled to a slow stop at the edge of the old neighborhood.

Loreley sat in the back seat, her manicured fingers drumming lightly against the leather armrest. Through the tinted glass, she watched as heads turned—slowly at first, then all at once.

People on the sidewalks, men lingering by blacked-out SUVs, women stepping out of boutique shops— they all saw her.

Some whispered. Others simply stared.

A ghost had returned.

She was no longer the girl they had discarded, the humiliated bride-to-be who had once walked these streets with her father's name as her only shield.

She had built her own empire.

And now, she has come back by choice.

The driver opened her door, and Loreley stepped out with slow, measured grace. The moment her heels touched the pavement, the street seemed to exhale.

A group of older men—former associates of her father—murmured to each other.

"Dario Cattaneo's widow…" "I thought she'd never show her face again." "Why is she back now?"

Loreley ignored them. She didn't need to acknowledge them. She had outgrown this place.

And yet, as she took her first steps toward the Moretti estate, she couldn't deny the way her pulse quickened.

This was not her home anymore. And she wasn't sure if it ever had been.

Luka was waiting for her at the gates.

Loreley hadn't seen her brother in three years, but he looked older—not just in the way time aged a man, but in the way stress wore him down.

There were shadows under his eyes, and when he looked at her, something unreadable flickered across his face.

"Loreley," he said.

She tilted her head slightly, studying him. "Luka."

For a moment, neither of them moved. Then, he exhaled, rubbing a hand over the back of his neck. "You actually came."

"I did."

His eyes flickered over her, assessing.

Not as a brother, but as a man sizing up a potential threat.

She smiled, slow and sharp. "Surprised?"

Luka swallowed. "A little." He stepped forward, as if to hug her, but at the last second, he hesitated.

And Loreley saw it— the guilt. Something was wrong.

She let him step back, giving him the space he clearly needed. But her mind was already working, already calculating.

Whatever Luka was hiding, she would find out. "Where's Mother?" she asked, her voice even.

Luka's expression darkened. "Inside."

And just like that, she stepped past him, walking toward the house she had once called home.

The Moretti estate felt colder.

The walls, once filled with laughter, now echoed with silence. The chandeliers still sparkled, the expensive furniture still stood, but the house itself felt empty.

Loreley walked the halls with measured steps, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor.

She had spent years in this house. Now, it felt like a mausoleum.

She reached her mother's bedroom and hesitated. Then, she pushed the door open.

The woman in the bed was not the mother she remembered.

Her mother had been elegant, composed, always draped in fine silk with pearls at her throat.

The woman before her now was fragile, her once dark hair streaked with silver, her skin pale and thin. She lay beneath heavy blankets, her breathing uneven.

For the first time in years, Loreley felt something tighten in her chest.

"Mamma," she whispered. Her mother's eyelids fluttered. Then, slowly, they opened.

When their gazes met, something flickered in the depths of her mother's tired eyes.

Recognition.

Regret.

"Loreley…" her voice was weak, barely more than a breath.

Loreley sat beside her, reaching out slowly, carefully. When her fingers brushed against her mother's hand, she was startled by how cold she felt.

"I'm here," Loreley murmured.

Her mother's fingers twitched in her grasp. "You shouldn't have come back."

Loreley let out a quiet laugh, but there was no humor in it. "That seems to be a theme."

Her mother's grip tightened slightly. "Your father…"

Loreley's expression hardened. "I don't care what he thinks."

A ghost of a smile touched her mother's lips. "You never did."

For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then the door creaked open behind her.

Luka.

His jaw was tense, his eyes flickering between them. "We need to talk."

Loreley exhaled, forcing herself to let go of her mother's hand.

"Later," she murmured.

But Luka's expression didn't change. "No," he said, his voice low. "Now."

Loreley followed Luka out of the room, her footsteps silent against the cold marble floor. He led her down the dimly lit hallway, past the portraits of their ancestors—ghosts of a family that had never truly been hers.

They stopped in their father's old study. The heavy wooden door shut behind them with a quiet click, sealing them away from prying ears.

Luka paced, tension radiating off him in waves.

"What the hell are you doing back here?" he hissed, running a hand through his hair.

Loreley arched a brow, crossing her arms. "Mother is dying, or did you forget?"

His jaw tightened. "This isn't about her. You showing up here—after everything—it complicates things."

A cold smile tugged at her lips. "For who?"

Luka hesitated. A fraction too long.

Loreley narrowed her eyes. "What aren't you telling me?"

He shook his head. "Just… stay out of things, Loreley. This isn't your world anymore."

She stepped closer, voice razor-sharp. "It was my world before it was yours."

Luka exhaled, looking away. "Just don't do anything reckless."

Later that night, Loreley stood at the balcony of her old room, staring at the city below.

The skyline was familiar, yet it felt distant. Like something from another life.

Then— A voice.

"You should've told me sooner."

Loreley's body went rigid.

She turned slowly, just in time to see Luka pacing the hallway outside her door, his phone pressed to his ear.

"I've handled my part, but if Zayden finds out—"

The name sent a bolt of ice through Loreley's veins.

Zayden.

Her stomach coiled with tension, but she forced herself to stay still, listening.

"No, I don't care what Brooks wants. She—" Luka's voice lowered, but she caught the last words before he turned the corner. "We agreed to keep this confidential."

Loreley's fingers curled into fists. Something was going on.

And Luka was right in the middle of it.
