Chapter 58

Ch. 58 / 255 May 14, 2026

POV: Jasmine

Liam listened to everything.

The secret meetings with Adelyn. Her demands—the million dollars, the public acknowledgment, the vindication she craved like oxygen. The Virtue Exchange evidence hanging over my head like a guillotine. The impossible position I'd been navigating alone while the brothers calculated board meetings and stock prices.

When I finished, he didn't explode. Didn't lecture. Didn't do any of the things I'd braced for.

He strategized.

"If we can get her to admit she leaked the photos deliberately—that it wasn't whistleblowing but revenge—the whole narrative shifts." Liam paced the length of the living room, his mind visibly working through angles and possibilities. "Right now, she's positioned as a concerned employee exposing workplace misconduct. But if we have proof that she orchestrated everything out of personal vendetta..."

"She'll never admit that." I shook my head. "She's too smart. Every word out of her mouth is calculated for maximum damage."

"Everyone has a breaking point."

Something shifted in his expression. The golden retriever optimism I'd fallen for—the earnest belief that problems could be solved with enough determination—transformed into something sharper. Harder. A glimpse of the businessman who'd built an empire, who'd learned to fight dirty when clean wasn't enough.

"We offer her what she really wants," Liam continued. "Not the money. Not the acknowledgment. What she really wants is the feeling of winning. Of watching you break."

"So I give her that."

"You make her think she's broken you completely. Surrender. Grovel. Let her believe she's destroyed everything you've built." His eyes met mine, fierce with conviction. "And when she gets confident enough to gloat—when she can't resist rubbing your face in her victory—we record everything."

The plan was risky. Dangerous. Required me to meet with Adelyn again, to play the desperate woman willing to surrender everything for peace. To let her think she'd won while wearing a wire that could send her to prison.

"What if she doesn't take the bait?"

"Then we fight the trial head-on. Present the evidence we have, challenge her credibility, let the jury decide." Liam stopped pacing, facing me fully. "But I think she will. She's not just after money or reputation, Jasmine. She wants to watch you suffer. That's more important to her than anything else. We use that against her."

He was right. I'd seen it in Adelyn's eyes at that hotel bar—the hunger that went beyond financial compensation. She wanted to see me broken. Wanted to savor the moment when everything I'd built collapsed around me.

That desire could be her undoing.

"Where do we meet?" I asked, already shifting into operational mode.

"Somewhere private but not isolated. Her apartment, maybe. She'll feel safe on her own territory, more likely to drop her guard."

"What do I say to get her talking?"

"You tell her you're done fighting. That the lawsuit, the trial, the constant attacks—it's too much. You're willing to give her everything she asked for, but you need to understand why." Liam's voice was steady, confident. "Ask her questions. Let her monologue. People like Adelyn can't resist explaining their genius."

We spent hours refining details.

The recording device—small enough to hide in jewelry, high-quality enough to capture clear audio. The script of capitulation I'd deliver, designed to trigger her need for vindication. The specific questions that would lead her toward incriminating admissions. The backup plans if she got suspicious, if she searched me, if anything went wrong.

Liam wrote and rewrote talking points, anticipating Adelyn's responses and mapping out conversation branches like a chess player thinking twelve moves ahead. I practiced my performance—the broken voice, the defeated posture, the tears that would convince her I was finally surrendering.

The work brought us closer.

Reminded me of the partnership that had drawn me to Liam in the first place—not just the physical attraction or the emotional support, but the intellectual collaboration. Two minds working in tandem toward a shared goal. The way he listened to my input, incorporated my ideas, treated me like an equal rather than a problem to be solved.

This was who we could be. Who we should have been from the beginning, before Adelyn's machinations and Jackson's predation and the weight of secrets I'd been carrying alone.

Around midnight, exhaustion caught up with us.

The strategy documents lay scattered across the coffee table, covered in Liam's handwriting and my annotations. We'd been at this for hours, fueled by determination and the occasional cup of coffee that had long since gone cold.

I leaned back against the couch cushions, letting my eyes close for just a moment. Felt Liam settle beside me, his warmth a familiar comfort after the long night.

"You should sleep," he murmured.

"So should you."

"In a minute."

What started as comfort transformed into need.

His hand found mine, fingers intertwining. Then his lips brushed my temple, my cheek, the corner of my mouth. Asking without words. Giving me every opportunity to pull away.

I didn't pull away.

Liam undressed me slowly, reverently, his hands asking permission at every boundary. Each button undone was a question. Each inch of skin revealed was a gift I chose to give. He moved like I was something precious—not fragile, but valuable. Worth taking time over.

When he entered me, it was with a tenderness that broke something loose in my chest.

Not passion—we'd had passion before, urgent and consuming. This was different. Deeper. The kind of intimacy that came from seeing someone at their worst and choosing to stay anyway.

We moved together in the quiet darkness, his forehead pressed to mine, breath mingling between us. No performance. No desperation. Just connection, raw and real and terrifying in its simplicity.

"You're not alone anymore," he whispered against my skin. "Whatever happens with the trial, with my father, with your mother—we face it together."

I wanted to believe him. Wanted to trust that this time would be different, that the promises made in darkness would survive the light of day.

But I'd learned the hard way that wanting something didn't make it true.

We fell asleep tangled together on the couch, strategy documents scattered around us like fallen leaves. For a few hours, I let myself exist in the peace we'd carved out of chaos.

My phone buzzed on the nightstand.

The sound jolted me awake, adrenaline flooding my system before my eyes had fully opened. Liam stirred beside me, arm tightening instinctively around my waist.

I reached for the phone, squinting at the screen in the darkness.

A text from Adelyn.

I accept your offer. Meet me tomorrow.
