Chapter 210

Ch. 210 / 255 May 14, 2026

POV: Jasmine

Dinner didn’t end so much as it softened into something else, the table cleared but the room still full, no one reaching for coats or checking the time. The evening held, stretching naturally into the kind of quiet continuation that only happened when leaving wasn’t part of the plan.

Asher was on the floor with Aurora, one knee bent, the other stretched out, a small pile of wooden blocks scattered between them. He moved slower than he used to, still measured in his recovery, but there was no hesitation in the way he followed her lead, stacking pieces where she placed them.

“Higher,” she said, handing him another block with complete authority.

“We’re already pushing structural limits,” he replied, setting it carefully on top anyway.

She knocked it over immediately, laughing, and he let out a quiet breath that almost passed for a laugh, gathering the pieces again without complaint.

In the kitchen, Finn stood at the sink, sleeves pushed back, running water steady as he worked through the last of the dishes. I stepped in beside him without speaking, picking up the towel from the counter and beginning to dry what he set aside.

“You don’t have to,” he said, not looking at me.

“I know,” I answered, taking the next plate from him.

For a while, we worked in silence, the rhythm of it easy, familiar, the kind of quiet that didn’t need to be filled. He passed me a glass, our fingers brushing for a second longer than needed, not enough to be anything, but enough to register.

He glanced at me then, not searching, not questioning, just looking, and I held it for a beat before returning my attention to the dish in my hands. The moment settled without being named, folding back into the movement between us.

“Leo’s serious about the apartment,” he said after a moment, his voice low enough not to carry.

“I know,” I replied. “It’s good.”

“It is,” he said, and turned back to the sink, letting the conversation end there.

In the living room, Leo and Nora sat close together, their voices low, their conversation steady in a way that spoke less of planning and more of certainty already reached. The space between them was smaller now, the ease in it unforced.

“It’s two blocks over,” Leo was saying. “Close enough to walk, far enough to have our own space.”

Nora nodded, her expression thoughtful but calm. “I like that,” she said. “We don’t need distance. Just… a door.”

“That we can close,” Leo added.

“And open,” she said, her hand brushing his briefly before settling back in place.

On the couch, Liam watched the room, his attention moving between all of it without fixing too long on any one point. When I came back in, he shifted slightly and patted the space beside him without looking away.

“Come here,” he said.

I sat, letting my shoulder settle against his, the familiarity of it grounding in a way that didn’t require thought. His arm came around me naturally, his hand resting lightly against my side.

Eleanor’s photograph was on the mantel above us, exactly where it had always been, her presence quiet but constant in the room that had reshaped itself around her absence. Nothing about it had changed, and that felt intentional.

My phone lay on the coffee table, face-down, exactly where I had left it earlier. I had seen the missed call, the name attached to it, and I had turned it over without opening it.

I wouldn’t answer.

Aurora’s voice cut across the room as she pushed herself up from the floor, one hand still holding a block as if it mattered. She looked at me, then at Liam, then made her decision without hesitation.

“Mommy,” she said, and started walking.

Not steady, not perfect, but hers, each step placed with effort and determination that made the distance feel longer than it was. Asher stayed where he was, watching, not moving to catch her, letting her cross it on her own.

Finn paused in the kitchen doorway, dish still in his hand, his attention shifting without breaking the moment. Leo and Nora fell quiet, their conversation suspended as they turned toward her.

She made it halfway before her balance gave, her steps faltering just enough that she tipped forward into the fall. I was already leaning in, my hands reaching before she fully lost it.

She landed in my lap with the full weight of it, her arms wrapping around my neck as if the fall had been intentional all along. Her body pressed into mine without hesitation, trusting the catch without needing to check.

“I’ve got you,” I said quietly, my hands steady against her back.

She nodded against my shoulder, settling immediately, as if that had always been the outcome.

I looked at Liam, and he was smiling, not broadly, not performatively, just there, quiet and certain. His hand tightened slightly at my side before relaxing again.

I followed his gaze across the room, taking it in the way he had been.

Asher was still on the floor, watching us, something unguarded in his expression that he wasn’t trying to hide. Finn stood in the doorway, his attention fixed on the same point, the dish forgotten in his hand.

Leo and Nora had turned back toward each other, but their hands were still loosely connected, their focus shared even in the quiet. The room held together without effort, each piece exactly where it belonged.

I held Aurora closer, her weight warm and solid against me, her breath steady where it brushed my neck. The feeling settled deeper than thought, quieter than anything that needed to be said out loud.

Aurora tightened her arms around my neck, settling more fully into me, and I closed my eyes for a moment, letting the room exist exactly as it was. Nothing needed to be added, nothing needed to change.

On the coffee table, my phone stayed face-down, the missed call sitting where I had left it, silent and unanswered.
