In the past few days, the wolf pack has been on high alert, their senses sharpened by a growing sense of danger.
They stick close together, keeping a watchful eye on one another. But even so, they've noticed that a few members of their pack have disappeared without a trace.
At first, the pack suspected that the rogues had returned. But how did the rogues know the exact location of each werewolf's home? Besides, the pack had been keeping an eye on the rogues, but they hadn't seen any suspicious activity.
They investigated the town and soon learned that a group of unidentified strangers had recently arrived. The pack was on edge, sensing danger lurking just beyond the boundaries of their territory but having no idea what it was.
They began to look into the strangers, but these newcomers were especially enigmatic. They seem to move with purpose and intention, their identities shrouded in mystery.
As the pack discussed the possible threat, tensions rose and tempers flared. Some of the more hot-headed wolves suggested taking the fight to the rogues, launching a preemptive strike to control the situation.
But it wasn't until they stumbled upon a clue that everything suddenly clicked into place.
In the home of one of the missing werewolves, they found a small bundle of wolfsbane, a deadly herb used to repel and kill werewolves. It dawned on them that there was another possibility: the werewolf hunters.
That was when Celeste realized she hadn't heard from Raymond the werewolf hunter for a while. She almost forgot about him. But now, as the air grew thick with the tension of fear, she wondered if Raymond had found out about their secret.
Perhaps Raymond had rallied the other hunters and set out to destroy the werewolves one by one, leaving Celeste to worry and wonder what might become of her and her pack.
The disappearance of the werewolves had taken place after that night of the full moon. So it was natural to guess if the hunters had been tracking them all along during the full moon night, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. The thought made Celeste shiver with fear.
As she paced anxiously around her home, waiting for the next piece of terrible news, Celeste knew that she couldn't simply sit and wait for the hunters to come for them. She couldn't bear the thought of her pack members being hunted down one by one, so she decided to take matters into her own hands.
Gathering all her courage, she made her way to Raymond's house, determined to discover what he knew and to put a stop to the hunters' plans.
But before she could even take a step outside the house, a voice called out to her, halting her in her tracks. Celeste's heart was pounding in her chest as she turned to face the owner of the voice.
"Where do you think you're going?" Jeremy's voice sounded in the air.
After that morning, the two had been on short talk, but that didn't make Jeremy less angry. And the two had been avoiding each other since.
So now, when Jeremy called out to her, Celeste was a little surprised and also nervous.
"I... I need to uncover the truth," Celeste replied hesitantly, her eyes avoiding his.
"You mean you're going to the hunter? To Hunter Raymond's place, specifically?" Jeremy's tone was sharp, his words direct as he voiced his concerns. "I know you care deeply about the wolf pack, but what about your injury–"
Then he stifled whatever he was going to say as if noticing how ridiculous his words had been.
Celeste was fully healed.
His eyes flickered to the spot where Celeste's injury had been. He had seen her through her recovery and had been there for her when she needed him most. For a moment, Celeste expected him to come up with a reason to convince her to stay, but instead, he let out a deep sigh.
"I'm coming with you," he said firmly, determination clear in every word. He looked up at her, his gaze unwavering. "I won't let you go alone."
Celeste was taken aback, surprised by his sudden change in demeanor. "You're not going to try to stop me?"
Jeremy shook his head. "It's not like I can stop you when you're determined to do something. How many times have you actually listened to us and backed down?" He huffed, but his tone didn't have an edge. "Now I see. I know you need to do this. So, it's not about stopping you, it's about making sure you're safe."
A small smile crept onto Celeste's face. She had always known he was fiercely protective of her, but his unwavering determination at this moment made her heart swell.
Following Jeremy, Celeste got into his car. The two of them were silent on the way to the hunter's place.
Celeste gazed out the window, watching as the familiar scenery rushed by in a blur. Her thoughts consumed her as she wondered what would happen if the hunters did appear in their town. Would the werewolves be able to continue living here or would they have to pack up and leave?
Leaving would mean giving up everything she was familiar with. What would it feel like to be so far away from it all? What about Jeremy?
"Why didn't you stop me?" The question tumbled out of her mouth unbidden. Jeremy had already given a sort of explanation, but Celeste felt like there was more to it.
"I used to think I had to protect you," Jeremy began. "Of course, I still want to protect you, but now, I think you don't need me. I see how strong and capable you are, Celeste."
He paused as if considering his words. "You're brave, you know that? You faced the hunter alone and kept the wolf pack's secret safe. When your pack was in danger, you stood up and protected the weaker members. I understand now. You have a natural instinct to protect your pack."
Celeste was taken aback by Jeremy's sudden outburst. Her face flushed red as she tried to process what he was saying. She couldn't believe how much he had changed his opinion of her in such a short time. And she wondered what happened to him to change his mind.
But she didn't voice her thoughts.
Jeremy's tone shifted as he continued. "I'm sorry you were bound to me because of the mate bond. If it weren't for that, any alpha would be lucky to have you. You would be a respected Luna."
A palpable sadness grew in the car as the words hung in the air. Celeste felt the weight of it, a heaviness that was hard to shake. The rest of the drive was spent in silence, the only sounds coming from the engine as they made their way to Raymond's cabin.
