Two Sides of My Love Life

Chapter 22

Ch. 22 / 30 Mar 26, 2026

[Julian’s POV]

My office door crashes open at 8:47 AM.

Nathan Cole stands in the doorway looking like a man who's been wrestling demons and losing spectacularly. Unshaven, wild-eyed, wearing yesterday's wrinkled suit like he slept in a dumpster. His jaw still carries that courier’s—Leo—bruise like a badge of dishonor.

"Julian." He's breathing hard. "You need to see this."

I set down my coffee with deliberate calm. "Nathan. You're supposed to be on administrative leave."

"Fuck the leave. You know who your precious Viola really is?" He stalks toward my desk, pulling out his phone with manic energy. "She told me herself. Last night. Screamed it right in my face like I was supposed to be impressed."

He slams the phone down, showing photos. Viola's Instagram. Zoomed images of her hands. The ring.

"Viola is Aurora Kane. From data analysis." Nathan laughs—hollow, unhinged. "The mousy invisible woman. That pathetic cardigan-wearing nobody has been playing all of us this whole time."

I look at the photos. The ring. The scar. The gesture patterns he's circled like evidence at a crime scene.

Everything clicks into place with quiet inevitability.

The laugh that made her shoulders shake. The phrase about people being people. The way she drew concepts in the air with precise hands. Every nagging suspicion I couldn't believe in now is ringing true.

Rory.

"You don't seem surprised." Nathan's voice sharpens. "Did you already know?"

"I suspected." The admission costs nothing. "I wasn't certain."

"Well, now you are. She confirmed it herself—stood there in her doorway and threw it in my face." He leans forward, hunger in his eyes. "She humiliated me. Got me fired. Ruined my fucking life with her little costume game. We need to—"

"We don't need to do anything."

Nathan blinks. "What?"

"You're going to leave this building." I stand slowly, voice dropping to ice. "And you're never coming back. You don't work here anymore, and security will be informed you're not welcome on the premises."

"Julian—"

"If you go near her again, I will personally ensure every company in this city knows exactly what kind of man you are." I let that settle. "The stalking. The harassment. The bathroom incident. All of it documented, distributed, devastating."

Nathan's face cycles through emotions—confusion, betrayal, rage. "You're taking her side? She lied to all of us!"

"She had her reasons. You have none."

"She made fools of us! You, me, Grayson—we were all chasing some fucking fantasy she created!"

"Get out, Nathan."

"This is bullshit!" He slams his palm against my desk. "We were supposed to be—you were supposed to understand—"

"I understand perfectly." I press the intercom. "Security to executive floor. Unauthorized visitor requiring escort."

Nathan's eyes go flat with vindictive rage. "You're going to regret this. Both of you."

"That's exactly the kind of threat I'll be documenting." I gesture toward the door. "Leave. Now."

Two security guards appear. Nathan lets them lead him away, but not before shooting me one last look—pure venom, pure promise.

This isn't over for him. I can see it in every line of his body.

The door closes. Silence swallows the office.

I sink into my chair and let the hurt wash in.

She's been right there. Every single day, sitting ten feet from my office. The same woman I worked late with, nodded at in elevators, dismissed as background furniture.

I thought what we had was real. Those conversations, those laughs, that kiss that felt like possibility.

But she couldn't trust me enough to show me the truth.

She saw me every day as Rory—invisible, overlooked Rory—and never once gave me the chance to see her. To really see her. She let me fall for a fantasy while the real woman hid behind glasses and cardigans.

Why? Was I that unapproachable? Did I seem like someone who'd judge her?

Or worse—did she think I'd only want the glamorous version?

I stare at my computer screen without seeing it. Hours blur together. Meetings happen. Words are spoken. None of it registers.

By six o'clock, I'm in my car heading toward her apartment.

I don't know what I'm going to say. I just know I need to say something.

The building is modest—worn brick, buzzing security door. I find her unit and knock before I can talk myself out of it.

Footsteps approach. The door opens.

Rory stands there in sweatpants and glasses, hair in a messy bun. No wig. No contacts. No armor.

She sees my face and her expression crumbles. "Nathan told you."

"This morning." I step inside when she backs away.

The apartment is small but warm. Evidence of a child everywhere—dinosaur toys scattered across the floor, crayon drawings on the refrigerator. A life she never mentioned. A son she kept hidden.

"Julian, I can explain—"

"Can you?" The words come out sharper than intended. "Because I've been trying to understand all day, and I keep hitting the same wall."

She wraps her arms around herself. "It's complicated."

"Then uncomplicate it. Tell me why you couldn't trust me." I pace her tiny living room. "We work together every day. I saw you in meetings. In elevators. In the break room. And the whole time, you were the woman I was falling for, and you never said a word."

"I was scared." Her voice cracks. "I created Viola because nobody saw Rory. I was invisible. Worthless. And then suddenly I wasn't—but only as someone else."

"That doesn't explain why you couldn't tell me."

"You were falling for Viola!" Tears spill down her cheeks. "The confident goddess in the designer dress. What if you didn't want the mousy woman underneath? What if I showed you the real me and you lost interest?"

"You didn't give me the chance to find out."

"I know." She sinks onto the couch, small and exhausted. "I know I should have. But every time I tried, I remembered how people look at Rory. How Nathan looked at me when I told him. Called me pathetic. A sad office mouse playing dress-up."

"I'm not Nathan."

"But how was I supposed to know that?" She looks up at me with red-rimmed eyes. "Everyone sees what they want to see. I couldn't risk being invisible to you too."

The hurt sits heavy in my chest. I understand her fear. I do. But understanding doesn't erase the betrayal of months spent falling for someone who was right there, hiding in plain sight.

"I thought what we had was real," I say quietly.

"It was real. Every conversation, every laugh—that was me. Viola is me, just... amplified."

"But you couldn't let me see the whole picture." I run a hand through my hair. "You let me fall for half a person."

"Julian—"

"You need to tell Grayson." I cut her off, redirecting before I say something I'll regret. "Before Nathan finds another way to blow this up. He's unstable. He's dangerous. And he's going to try something."

"I know. I'll call him tonight."

"Good." I move toward the door. The distance between us feels insurmountable.

"Julian." Her voice stops me. "I'm sorry. For all of it."

I pause with my hand on the doorknob. "I believe you. I just don't know if that's enough."

The door closes behind me. The hallway stretches empty in both directions.

I walk away carrying the weight of what could have been—and the uncertainty of what comes next.
