Archie’s POV
The second payment deadline passed six hours ago.
I don't have the money. Maya's seventy thousand is gone—handed over to Vincent in that abandoned parking lot two weeks ago.
My own liquidated assets are spent, emergency funds drained, investments cashed out at losses I'll be paying off for years.
There's no way to produce another three hundred thousand dollars in two weeks without raising questions I can't answer.
Without explaining to Xander why his head of security is bleeding money. Without admitting the vulnerability that makes me exactly the kind of security risk I'm supposed to protect the family from.
I sit in my apartment staring at my phone, waiting for the call I know is coming.
A call comes at midnight. My thumb hovers over decline, but refusing to answer won't make Vincent disappear, won't make the debt evaporate. Won't change the fact that I'm trapped in every direction with no way out.
I answer.
"Archie." Vincent's voice is smooth, pleasant, like we're old friends catching up rather than predator and prey. "You missed our appointment today."
"I don't have it." No point in lying, no point in pretending I can pull three hundred thousand dollars out of thin air. "I need more time."
"Time." He laughs softly. "That's what you said two weeks ago. That's what you'll say two weeks from now. But time doesn't solve your problem, does it? Time just makes the interest compound."
My jaw clenches. "What do you want?"
"I want my money. But since you can't provide that..." He pauses, and lets the silence stretch. "I think it's time we had a more honest conversation about your situation."
"We had a conversation. I'm not giving you information about the Hales."
"No, you're not." His voice hardens slightly. "Not yet. But you will. Because the alternative is so much worse."
My stomach drops. "What alternative?"
"I expose everything to Xander Hale. Your gambling-addicted father. Your brother's suicide, the one you failed to prevent, the one that's been eating you alive for years. The debts that destroyed your family. I position you as exactly what you are—a security risk. Someone whose desperation makes them compromised and vulnerable."
The threat lands like ice water down my spine. Everything I've built, every relationship I've formed with this family, every reason they trust me—gone. Vincent will take it all and twist it into evidence that I'm dangerous.
That I've been hiding vulnerabilities that could be exploited. That keeping me around puts them at risk.
"Xander Hale values loyalty above almost everything else,"
Vincent continues, voice casual, conversational.
"How loyal will he think you've been when he finds out you've been hiding a million-dollar debt? When he realizes you accepted money from his employee—that pretty assistant you've been fucking—to pay down debts you never disclosed?"
Maya. He's bringing Maya into this explicitly now. Not just vague threats about my girlfriend being exposed, but specific knowledge, specific leverage.
"You leave her out of this."
"I would love to." Vincent's smile carries through the phone. "But she's already in it, isn't she? You took her money, pulled her into your mess, made her complicit in hiding your financial crisis from her employers."
My hands are shaking. I grip the phone tighter, trying to force them steady.
"And if that's not enough leverage, there's always the direct approach."
Vincent continues, voice dropping lower.
"Such a pretty target, your Maya. Works for the Hales, has access to their home, their children. So exposed. So vulnerable. Would be a shame if something happened to her because you couldn't pay your debts."
The implicit threat steals my breath. He's not just threatening to expose me anymore. He's threatening Maya directly. Her safety. Her life.
"You touch her…"
"I won't have to touch her if you give me what I want." Vincent's voice returns to pleasant. Reasonable. "Information or money. Your choice. But you will pay, Archie. One way or another."
The call ends, dial tone buzzing in my ear like static.
I sit frozen in my apartment, phone still pressed to my ear, hands trembling so badly I nearly drop it. Vincent has me completely cornered. He'll expose my past to Xander, destroying the trust and position I've spent years building.
He'll hurt Maya—either by implicating her in my financial crisis or by directly threatening her safety. And there's nothing I can do to stop him because I don't have the money and I can't compromise the family's security to get it.
I'm trapped. Completely and utterly trapped.
Meanwhile, the surveillance footage of Maya loops in my mind like a nightmare I can't wake up from. Her late-night excursions through the house.
The files she accesses—personnel records from six years ago, financial transactions, correspondence between Xander and Gerald.
The six-year timeline that connects to nothing I can identify but feels significant in ways I can't prove.
The way she knew about the east study. The questions she asks about Gerald's case.
The access she has to systems she shouldn't be able to navigate. All the patterns that add up to something I don't want to believe but can't ignore.
And then there are the nights we spent together, every single detail burned into my memory in ways I can't erase even when I should.
The way her voice changes when she moans—starting soft and breathless, building into something desperate when I find the right angle, the right rhythm.
The way she tastes when I kiss down her body, salt and sweetness and something uniquely her that I crave like addiction.
The way she grips my shoulders when I'm pushing inside her, nails digging in hard enough to leave marks, making her take every inch of me while her eyes go dark with pleasure she can't hide.
The way she looked at me in the darkness and asked if I trusted her. The way I said yes even though every instinct I have is screaming that something's wrong.
I have no concrete evidence that Maya is dangerous. Just patterns, just surveillance footage that could have explanations.
Instincts that have kept the Hale family safe for years but might be wrong this one time because I'm too in love to see clearly.
Vincent threatening from one side—demanding money I don't have or information I won't give, using Maya as leverage, positioning her as both victim and weapon depending on what serves his purposes best.
Maya's secrets gnawing from the other—the files she accesses in the middle of the night, the questions she asks that probe too deep, the six-year anniversary that connects to everything in ways I can't prove but can't dismiss.
My own past crushing down from above—the debts, the family history, the vulnerabilities I've been hiding that Vincent will use to destroy everything I've built if I don't give him what he wants.
I sit in my apartment with my head in my hands, feeling every support beam in my life cracking simultaneously.
The foundations I've built from the wreckage of my father's addiction and my brother's death—all of it fracturing under pressure I can't withstand.
I've rebuilt myself from nothing once before. Crawled out of the hole my family dug and created something stable, something meaningful, something worth protecting.
I don't know if I can do it again. Especially not when this time, the wreckage might take everyone I love with me.
Maya with her secrets and her lies and the way she fits against me like she was made to be there.
The Hales who trusted me with their safety and their children and their lives. The family I've sworn to protect even as my past rises up to destroy them.
I'm going to lose everything. The only question is how much damage I'll cause when I finally fall apart.
