Tied to My Ex

Chapter 20

Ch. 20 / 30 Apr 27, 2026

[Valentina’s POV]

I watch Dante's face and see impossible math happening behind his eyes. Spare Marco and prove sentiment can sway him. Kill Marco and destroy the only ally he has. Lorenzo practically vibrates with anticipation, his smile suggesting Christmas came early with Dante's reputation wrapped in a bow.

The silence stretches thick enough to choke on. Every soldier holds their breath, watching their boss calculate. Marco's on his knees, blood dripping onto expensive marble, waiting for a verdict he knows is coming.

I should stay quiet. I promised Dante I'd stay quiet during family business, let him handle things without my interference turning complicated situations into catastrophic ones. My track record on "making things better" is currently batting zero in the criminal underworld league.

But then I think about Marco. About him driving me to the hospital, checking on Mama’s progress without being asked, handing me that envelope with genuine sympathy in his eyes. Apologizing for not being able to drive me home after the wedding cancellation.

About his sister's finger arriving in a box with a note that probably didn't even bother with pleasantries before detailing the torture menu. About what any person in this room would do if it were their family being held hostage—sister, daughter, mother, anyone they loved.

What would they do? Follow the rules and let their loved ones be carved up for principle? Or break every law they swore to uphold and pray the damage could be contained?

The answer seems pretty fucking obvious from where I'm standing, which admittedly is the corner where people who don't understand mafia politics congregate to make terrible decisions.

I step forward before my brain can talk me out of it. Self-preservation apparently clocked out for lunch and isn't coming back.

The room tenses immediately. Every eye swivels toward me like I've just announced I'm tap-dancing through a minefield for entertainment purposes. Dante's expression shifts to something between "don't you dare" and "I'm going to kill you myself later" which is a very specific look I'm getting increasingly familiar with.

Too late. I'm committed now. Might as well finish this trainwreck.

I speak directly to Dante, voice clear enough to carry through the hall, addressing the one person whose opinion actually matters here.

"Marco's sister was kidnapped by the Calabrese family two months ago. They sent him her finger in a box, and told him to feed them information or they'd send her back in pieces. Progressively smaller pieces, presumably, until there wasn't enough left to mail."

The room is so quiet I can hear my own heartbeat doing percussion solos against my ribcage. I turn to address the soldiers, because apparently I've decided public speaking during mafia trials is my new hobby.

"What would any of you do? Seriously. If it were your sister, your daughter, your mother. If someone sent you their finger with instructions to betray your family or watch them be tortured to death slowly. What would you do?"

Silence. The kind that suggests everyone's running calculations they'd rather not share, probably arriving at answers that make them uncomfortable about their previous certainty regarding traitor protocols.

Lorenzo's eyes light up like Christmas came early and brought him a puppy. A murderous, strategic puppy that he's going to weaponize against everyone he dislikes.

"This," he announces to the room with barely contained glee, "is exactly the problem. First she interferes over a maid being assaulted—which was inappropriate but at least defensible. Now she's overturning death sentences. This is a pattern, gentlemen. A woman who thinks she runs this family."

His smile could freeze hell and possibly several adjacent dimensions. "Next she'll be questioning every decision, every order, every tradition we've built. Where does it end? When she's sitting at the head table making policy? When she's decided that feelings matter more than law?"

I ignore him completely, which probably confirms his "pattern" theory but I'm already in this deep. My eyes stay locked on Dante, watching him process this disaster I've just escalated from "complicated" to "catastrophically fucked."

I've made this worse. So much worse. But backing down now means Marco dies anyway and I've accomplished nothing except proving Lorenzo right about my interference being a liability. Might as well commit to the bit.

"Is this the family you lead?" I ask Dante quietly, voice steady despite my heart trying to escape through my throat.

"One that executes men for refusing to let their sisters be tortured? That punishes people for choosing between impossible options and picking the one that keeps their family alive? Because if that's the case, I need to know. I need to understand exactly what kind of world I'm living in now."

The silence that follows is so heavy it could collapse under its own weight. Lorenzo is smiling like he's won the lottery and a prize horse. Marco is watching me with something between gratitude and horror, probably processing that I just made his situation exponentially worse.

The soldiers are frozen, waiting to see if their Don will let a woman—his woman, technically, but still a woman—publicly challenge his authority.

Dante's jaw tightens, muscles jumping under skin like they're preparing for violence. His expression is unreadable, which is somehow more terrifying than rage would be. The calculation behind his eyes shifts, recalculates, arrives at a decision that costs him something I can't quite measure.

Then he speaks, voice cold and final. "Marco lives."

The room erupts in whispers immediately silenced by Dante's raised hand. "Stripped of rank. Confined to the estate. Under surveillance. But breathing."

His eyes sweep the room, landing on each soldier with enough weight to make them reconsider their life choices. "Anyone who has a problem with this decision can discuss it with me privately. I'll be happy to explain my reasoning in detail."

The threat is clear—challenge me and join Marco in whatever punishment awaits insubordination. No one moves. No one speaks.

Except Lorenzo. His smile is the most terrifying thing I've ever seen, and I've seen Dante's scar up close while he was actively considering murder. This smile promises consequences, planning, long-term strategy that will end badly for everyone involved.

"Of course, padrone," Lorenzo says smoothly, inclining his head with just enough respect to avoid insubordination while making it clear this isn't over. "Your mercy is noted. I'm sure the family will appreciate your... compassionate leadership."

The words land like grenades wrapped in politeness. Everyone in this room just watched the boss show mercy because his woman asked. Everyone just saw that Don Falcone can be swayed by sentiment when it comes to the girl he bought at auction.

I just handed Lorenzo everything he needed to undermine Dante's authority. Every weapon he could want to position himself as the strong alternative when the current boss proves too soft. Every justification for a coup that will end with bodies and blood and probably me regretting every decision that led here.

But Marco is alive. Breathing. Getting a second chance he absolutely didn't deserve by mafia law but maybe deserved by human law, if those are different things in this world.

I meet Dante's eyes across the hall and see it clearly—fury, resignation, something that might be understanding buried under layers of strategic calculation about how badly I just fucked us both.

Yeah. I definitely made this worse.

Might as well add it to the list of disasters I'm collecting like trading cards. At this rate I'll have the full set by next week.
