The Outcast Bride of the Alpha Warlord

CHAPTER 56 — The Forbidden Night

Ch. 56 / 150 Jan 08, 2026

POV: Soraya

The fortress was quieter than usual that night—too quiet. The kind of silence that felt deliberate, as if the walls themselves were holding their breath. The raid had shaken everyone, even the bravest warriors. Wolves moved like shadows through the corridors, low-voiced and tense.

I wandered the halls to clear my head, unable to sleep, magic still thrumming under my skin from the day’s training. Moonlight bled through the lattice windows, painting silver patterns across the sandstone floors. Every whisper of wind felt like a hand brushing the back of my neck.

Then I heard footsteps.

Slow. Heavy. Familiar.

I stopped at the end of the corridor, breath catching before I even saw him.

Raevan stepped out from the dim archway, hair damp from a recent wash, chest bandaged under a half-tied robe, scent tinged with smoke and steel. His eyes swept the hall—then found me.

They softened instantly.

“Soraya,” he breathed.

The air around us tightened like a pulled bowstring.

I swallowed hard. “You should be resting.”

“I tried.” His voice was rough, low. “Couldn’t.”

My pulse fluttered—too fast. “The healers said you lost too much blood.”

“And you gave it back,” he murmured, taking a step closer. “You keep doing that.”

“Doing what?”

“Saving me.”

Heat rushed to my cheeks. I looked away. “Don’t read into that.”

He took another step. The air thickened.

I could feel him before he even reached me—the heat of his body, the wildness under his skin, the way his presence pressed into the space between us like gravity.

“Why are you awake?” he asked softly.

“Couldn’t sleep either,” I said honestly. “Too much noise in my head.”

His jaw tensed. “Zarek?”

“Everything.”

Silence stretched between us—fragile, burning, unbearable.

I stepped back. He stepped forward.

“Raevan—don’t,” I whispered.

“I’m not touching you.” His voice dipped lower. “But I can’t pretend anymore.”

“Pretend what?”

“That you don’t pull me like the tide.”

My breath hitched.

“You have a fiancée,” I whispered. “A war. A council that barely trusts you. A whole empire watching every move.”

“Yes,” he said. “And none of that stops this.”

He gestured between us.

Not touching.

Not breathing too close.

But the air glowed with unsaid words.

“I’m trying to stay away,” he said. “Storms know I’ve tried.”

“Then try harder,” I whispered, but my voice wasn’t steady.

His eyes darkened. “Tell me you don’t feel this.”

I opened my mouth—

To lie. To run. To save us both. But nothing came out.

He stepped closer, close enough that his breath brushed my cheek.

“Tell me,” he whispered again, “and I’ll walk away.”

His hand lifted—not touching—but hovering near my face, trembling with restraint. The heat radiating off his skin made my knees weaken.

“Raevan…” I whispered.

“Say it,” he pleaded. I couldn’t.

My whole body betrayed me—leaning in, drawn to him like gravity itself. My pulse thundered. My breath shook. Every instinct, every flicker of magic, every part of my wolf pulled toward him.

“I shouldn’t,” I whispered.

“I know.”

“I can’t.”

“I know.”

His forehead touched mine.

Softly.

Barely.

And the moment our skin brushed—the world broke.

Heat roared through me.

My breath tangled. My hands curled into his robe without thinking. The kiss happened before either of us realized the restraint had snapped.

One second of hesitation— and then we crashed together like the storm we’d been avoiding all along.

His mouth met mine with a hunger that stole every thought from my head. Not gentle. Not sweet. Desperate. Devouring. His hand slid behind my neck, pulling me closer, deepening the kiss until my knees buckled.

I let out a breathless sound—part relief, part surrender. His other hand wrapped around my waist, lifting, guiding, pressing me against the wall as if he’d been holding this in for years.

“Raevan—” I gasped.

“Don’t stop me,” he whispered against my lips. “Not tonight.”

I didn’t. I couldn’t.

My fingers tangled in his hair. His lips trailed down my throat. My heart pounded so loud it drowned the world. The hallways, the war, Azhara, the council—all disappeared under the weight of heat and longing and the way he said my name like a prayer he’d been denying.

When he lifted me into his arms, I didn’t protest.

When he carried me into his chamber, I didn’t think.

When his mouth found mine again, the last of my resistance shattered.

The night melted around us. Heat. Breath. Hands.

Whispers I shouldn’t have heard, but clung to anyway.

We didn’t fall into madness. We surrendered to it. A final kiss—hungry, aching, inevitable—and all thought dissolved into the dark.

***

In the quiet after, my heartbeat refused to slow.

His arms around me were too warm.

His breath against my shoulder was too gentle.

And as I lay there in the darkness, staring at the ceiling I had no right to be under, reality seeped in like cold water

This night shouldn’t have happened.
