I emerge from the shower feeling approximately seventy percent less like a human soup dumpling, which is progress.
My hair is still damp, dripping onto the clean t-shirt I borrowed from the staff laundry room and I'm about to head upstairs to my actual quarters when I find Alessandro waiting in the kitchen.
He's leaning against the counter with a coffee cup in his hand, and there's something in his expression that makes my stomach drop. Not anger. Worse. So much worse.
Amusement.
The kind that says he's been planning something and I'm not going to like it.
"Feel better?" he asks.
I nod, mumbling a thank you that comes out smaller than I intended. Because here's the thing about gratitude when you're covered in cafeteria soup: it's complicated.
Alessandro tilts his head, studying me with those gray-green eyes that miss absolutely nothing. "Interesting. You never replied to my texts earlier."
I open my mouth to explain—phone destroyed, sister from hell, act of violence via legume-based liquid—but he holds up one hand.
"Rule One. You go nowhere I don't know about," he says, and his voice has gone soft in that way that makes my skin prickle. "I couldn't reach you for almost a half an hour, Sofia."
"My phone was destroyed, sir. That wasn't my fault—"
"I know." His smile is small, dangerous. "Chiara has a flair for the dramatic. But here's the thing about rules: they don't care about fault. They only care about results."
My hands curl into fists at my sides. "So you're going to punish me because your sister decided to go full Mean Girls in the cafeteria?"
"Punishment implies anger. I'm not angry." He sets down his coffee. "Consider it more of a... correction. So starting tomorrow, you'll wear a new uniform I've selected for you."
Something in his tone makes warning bells go off in my head. "What kind of uniform?"
"The kind that arrives tomorrow morning. Wear it." His smile widens just slightly. "That's an order."
* * *
The package arrives at my door at 6 AM, which is either impressive efficiency or proof that Alessandro planned this whole thing in advance. Possibly both. Probably both.
Definitely both.
I tear open the box with shaking hands, and… Oh, you've got to be kidding me.
The "maid uniform" inside looks like something from a very specific genre of internet content that I'm not going to name because I have some dignity left. Maybe.
The skirt is so short it might legally qualify as a belt. The neckline dips low enough to require engineering feats I'm not sure are physically possible. And the whole thing is clearly designed to do exactly one thing: humiliate me.
Make me feel small, exposed, powerless.
I hold it up to the light, and my hands are trembling. Not with fear. With pure, white-hot rage that could probably power a small city if harnessed correctly.
"I'm going to murder him…" I whisper to the empty room. "I'm going to finish this mission and then I'm going to murder him with a spoon. Maybe a very dull spoon."
But not now. Sofia Russo wouldn't murder anyone. Sofia Russo needs this job desperately. Sofia Russo has younger siblings counting on her to work off their family's debt, to keep them safe, to survive this.
So I put on the uniform that makes me feel like a very sad fantasy rather than an actual employee. When I check myself in the mirror, I look exactly how he wants me to look: exposed, vulnerable, objectified.
Like someone’s sex-doll. Like someone’s property.
Like his possession.
Oh I hate it. I hate him. I hate this entire situation with the burning intensity of a thousand suns. But I square my shoulders, school my expression into something resembling neutrality, and go to clock in for my shift.
Alessandro is in his study when I arrive, typing something on his laptop with the focused intensity of someone who's definitely not thinking about the humiliating uniform he forced his maid to wear.
I open the door with a knock and he doesn't even look up. "Come in."
Stepping inside, I keep my eyes lowered like a good little maid. Trying to project meek obedience despite the fact that I'm currently wearing what amounts to a costume from someone's very specific daydream.
Alessandro looks up from his laptop, and his gaze travels slowly, deliberately slowly, from my face down to my legs and back up again.
The air in the room feels charged, like right before a thunderstorm. "Come closer."
I do, stopping a few feet from his desk. My heart is hammering, but I keep my breathing steady. He leans back in his chair, studying me with an expression I can't quite read.
"What do you think of the new uniform?"
My jaw is so tight it aches. I force the words out through gritted teeth. "Whatever you prefer, sir. I'll wear it."
Something flickers in his eyes—satisfaction, maybe, or something darker.
"Good girl. Now go get my coffee." He pauses. "And Sofia? Be careful bending down to pick things up in that skirt. Unless you want to give everyone a show."
My face flushes hot with humiliation and rage, but I turn and walk out. Hyperaware of how short the skirt is and how exposed I feel. How every step feels like walking through a minefield of potential wardrobe malfunctions.
In the kitchen, I have to grip the counter for a moment, breathing hard, fighting the urge to scream or throw something or possibly set the entire brownstone on fire and walk away whistling.
"Get it together," I whisper to myself. "You're playing a role. You can use this. You can turn this around."
I make his coffee in that specific way, because apparently controlling every aspect of someone's life includes their incredibly slightly ridiculous caffeine preferences, and carry it back to his study on a tray that only shakes a bit.
Alessandro watches me set it down on his desk with that same dark, satisfied expression, like I'm not a person but a chess piece he's successfully maneuvered into position.
I turned to leave, and then a split-second decision formed in my rebellious mind. Calculated risk. Possible death wish.
I turn back, and when I speak, my voice is soft with just the slightest edge of mockery. "Is there anything else my Master needs?"
The word hangs in the air between us like a grenade with the pin pulled.
Alessandro goes completely still. His eyes lock onto mine, and I can see his jaw tighten. Can see the way his hands grip the arms of his chair hard enough that his knuckles go white.
For one long, terrible moment, he looks like he might get up. Might close the distance between us, might grab my arm and—
No, traitorous mind. Stop that.
But he doesn't move. He just sits there, and when he finally speaks, his voice is rough. Raw. "You can go now."
I leave, and the second I'm out of his sight, I lean against the hallway wall, my whole body burning and trembling. But I filed it away. His reaction.
The way that single word affected him… That loss of control for a moment, the hunger in his eyes, the white-knuckled grip on his chair… It's leverage. It's power.
And when the time comes, I'll use it to destroy him.
