The Lycan King's Secret Daughter

Chapter 201

Ch. 201 / 255 May 14, 2026

POV: Sylra

The service corridor door had closed behind him less than a minute ago.

I was still standing at the table. The two crystal cups sat between my hands — both untouched, both full, both exactly where they had been placed an hour earlier. The library was quiet around me in the way that rooms went quiet after something had happened in them.

It had begun simply enough.

I had been at the table working through the Moon Blessing texts when I heard the corridor latch. I did not turn. I let him cross the floor alone and come to me, because the room belonged to me and I had invited him into it and that order of things mattered.

He had set the wine on the table. He had poured two cups. He had pushed one toward me. I had not lifted it.

He spoke first. "You came to my house. I am returning the visit."

I looked up then. "You have one hour. Speak."

He took the chair across from me without asking. He sat with the stillness of a man who knew what his body cost him now and was economizing.

"My wolf has been dying many years. The smell is in my breath now. Your healer caught it the day you arrived. I saw his face at the dinner table." A pause, level and unheld. "I have not slept since the night you rode into my courtyard. I came tonight to tell you why."

I said nothing. I waited.

Lord Erran leaned forward over the table.

"My wolf does not register you as a queen." His voice stayed low, conversational. "It registers you as the only mate it will ever recognize."

He held my eyes and did not look away.

"Your hair smells like winter rain on stone. Your pulse moves at your throat when you do not know I am watching. I have spent every night since the dinner imagining the sounds you make for the three men sleeping under your roof."

He did not pause between sentences.

"I would put my hands on your hips. I would take you on the surface of a desk like the one between us now. I would make your wolf accept mine. I would hear you, exactly once, before I die."

The library was very quiet.

I gave him three breaths. Four. I did not touch the cup. I did not move my hands.

He recognized the patience in me for what it was and moved on.

"Become my mate by Valdris rite," he said. "Share your power. I live, and your dynasty is sealed by Valdris blood for generations — bloodlines no Conclave can challenge, no Solvayne can petition against."

He set his hands flat on the table between us.

"Refuse, and I leave at dawn, and I use what I have left. What I have left is one weapon Veth gave me before her network collapsed. I use it on your child."

A pause.

"One thing I give you for free, no matter what you choose. There is a Thorne woman in the eastern forests. Maelric's sister. She is alive. Veth has held her for many years. I know roughly where. That is the only kindness I have in me."

I took three slow breaths.

On the fourth, I reached for my own wolf — gold and clean, the three bonds running warm and present against my sternum, all of it integrated, all of it mine. I let it rise to the surface of my skin for one second.

The library went bright. Not candlelight. Not dawn. The gold frequency running open-circuit and uncontained, filling the room with the specific light that lived at the outside edge of what my body had learned to do.

Lord Erran stepped back into the bookcase.

His own wolf whined under his ribs. I heard it clearly — small, high, involuntary, the sound of a dying animal recognizing something that outranked it on a register older than language.

I let the light close. I stood with my hands at my sides and looked at him against the bookcase and spoke once.

"You came too late." My voice was level and final. "You came three men too late. You came one daughter too late."

I held his eyes across the width of the table.

"Ride at dawn. Touch my child and I end your line tonight in this library." One beat. "Walk out."

He had walked out while I had stood at the table and done not one thing until my breathing finished the work it needed to do.

The library door opened from the east.

Caelen came through at the moment Lord Erran's footsteps cleared the far wall — the war bond had run hot the entire meeting and he had held position until the instant he didn't have to. Vedran came down from the gallery stairs. Kael came in from the south.

The three of them filled the doorway and then the room, the bonds running at full register between us — not emergency. Arrival.

I did not turn.

"He named a Thorne woman in the eastern forests." My voice was flat and operational, my eyes on the two untouched crystal cups between my hands. "Maelric's sister. Says she's alive. Says Veth has held her for many years. He will not give the location."

I straightened and stepped back from the table.

"We are not going after her yet. The aunt is for after we survive the next weeks. Take this room apart for evidence. Anything he touched. We will not get another night with what he left here."
