The Lycan King's Secret Daughter

Chapter 15

Ch. 15 / 255 May 14, 2026

Sylra's POV

Caelen's eyes widened, his hand rising slowly to touch the mark I'd left on his cheek.

For a long moment, neither of us moved. The moonlight carved his features into sharp angles, catching the disbelief that flickered across his face before something darker replaced it.

"No one," he said quietly, "has ever hit me in the face."

"Then everyone else was too afraid." I was still shaking, still raw from the failed transformation, but the rage had burned away everything except this moment. "I'm not afraid of you, Caelen."

His jaw tightened. "You should be."

He moved faster than I could track. One second he was standing three feet away, the next his shoulder slammed into my midsection and we were both crashing to the ground. I hit the frozen earth hard, the impact driving the air from my lungs, but I didn't stop fighting.

I drove my elbow into his ribs. He grunted and rolled, taking me with him, and suddenly I was on top, my fist connecting with his jaw before he caught my wrist. We grappled across the courtyard, all the tension of the past weeks exploding in a tangle of limbs and fury.

"You think you know everything about me," I spat, wrenching my arm free. "You think you can see inside my head, pick apart every weakness, every flaw."

Caelen blocked my next strike and swept my legs out from under me. I hit the ground again, and he pinned me there, his weight pressing me into the cold stone.

"I think you're going to get yourself killed," he growled.

I bucked against his hold, managing to free one hand long enough to rake my nails across his forearm. He hissed but didn't release me.

"You're a coward!" The words tore from my throat before I could stop them. "You hide behind those cold eyes and pretend you don't feel anything. But you do. I see it."

His grip faltered for just a second. I used the opening to twist sideways, reversing our positions until I had my forearm pressed against his throat.

"I see the way you look at me when you think I'm not paying attention," I continued, breathing hard. "I see how careful you are when you touch me, even when you're supposed to be hurting me. I see you, Caelen. All of you."

Something shifted in his expression. The cold mask cracked, and beneath it I glimpsed something raw, something wounded.

Then rage flooded back into his features.

He threw me off with a snarl, and before I could recover, his hand was fisted in the front of my shift, yanking me upright.

"And you're weak!" His face twisted with an emotion I couldn't name. "You think you've changed? You think a few weeks of training has fixed what three years of Blackmaw broke?"

"Don't you dare—"

"You still flinch!" He shook me, his eyes blazing. "You still apologize for taking up space. You still look at people who hurt you with hope in your eyes, wondering if maybe this time they'll love you if you're good enough."

The words hit harder than any physical blow. My vision blurred with sudden, furious tears.

"I'M TRYING!" The roar that came out of me didn't sound human. "What more do you want from me? I'm doing everything you ask! I train until I can't stand, I face those vultures on the council, I'm trying to become someone worthy of a throne I never wanted!"

Caelen's grip on my shift tightened. In one brutal motion, he spun me around and shoved me against the courtyard wall, stone scraping against my back through the thin fabric. His body pressed against mine, pinning me in place.

Our faces were inches apart. I could feel his breath hot against my skin, could see the pulse hammering in his throat.

"You think I don't see you trying?" His voice cracked on the last word, something breaking behind his eyes. "Every day, I watch you get back up. Every day, you face things that would destroy anyone else, and you keep fighting."

His forehead dropped to rest against mine. The rage had drained out of him, leaving something raw and exposed in its place.

"You're the first person," he said, barely above a whisper, "who ever looked at me and saw more than a weapon. More than a tool to be used and discarded. And I—"

He stopped. His breath was ragged, his chest heaving against mine.

"You what?" My voice came out hoarse.

His hands trembled where they gripped my shoulders. "I can't. I swore an oath. I'm supposed to protect you, not—"

The words hung between us, unfinished but perfectly clear. The tension was unbearable, a physical pressure building in my chest, making it hard to breathe. Something had shifted between us, some wall had cracked, revealing a door that hadn't existed before.

His lips were so close. One small movement and they would touch mine. His eyes dropped to my mouth, and I felt my body lean toward him without conscious decision.

Then I thought of Rovan.

Rovan, who had smiled at me when we first met. Rovan, who had made me feel special, chosen, wanted. Rovan, who had slowly, methodically taught me that my worth depended on how useful I could be to him.

The memory crashed through me with the force of ice water.

I pressed my palms against Caelen's chest and pushed. He stumbled back, confusion and hurt flickering across his features.

"I've felt this before." My voice sounded distant, hollow. "This pull. This feeling that someone finally sees me for who I really am."

Caelen's brow furrowed. "Sylra—"

"I felt it with someone who ended up choosing everyone except me." I wrapped my arms around myself, suddenly aware of how cold the night had become. "Someone who started out kind and patient and made me believe I mattered. Until I didn't."

Understanding dawned in his eyes, followed immediately by something that looked painfully close to grief.

"I'm not him," Caelen said. The words came out rough, almost desperate.

I looked at him, at the red mark still visible on his jaw, at the way his hands hung at his sides as though he didn't know what to do with them.

"Maybe not." I stepped back, putting more distance between us. "But I thought he was kind too. In the beginning."

Caelen flinched as though I'd slapped him again.

I turned and walked away, my footsteps echoing against the frozen stones. Every instinct screamed at me to look back, to see if he was watching, to give him some sign that I didn't mean it.

I kept walking. I didn't look back.
